- Linear dichroism and absorption spectra were measured for some 1,4-benzodiazepines dissolved and partially oriented in a polymer matrix. The results are discussed in terms of polarizations of the transitions in the two noninteracting benzene nuclei.

- It is questioned whether common circular dichroism (CD) spectrometers can be relied upon if they are calibrated at a single wavelength only. A procedure for obtaining the influence of certain instrumental parameters is described, and relations are given to correct the CD.This discussion was found relevant on examination of a particular commercial CD spectrometer for which fairly large corrections were necessary. It is suggested that the different values reported for two common CD standards may be explained by errors of the type considered, in different instruments.

- A study of subthreshold leakage current in n-channel transistors on low threshold voltage CMOS circuits has been made. Redistribution of impurities at the silicon surface during thermal oxidation is shown to be the main cause of excess subthreshold leakage current. Processing techniques to minimize this leakage have been developed.

- A FAMOS cell may be unintentionally written during repeated reading. The temperature dependence of this failure process was studied and it is shown that the worst case for unintentional charging of a FAMOS device occurs at low temperatures. This is qualitatively explained by a simple model including the temperature dependence of preavalanche carrier multiplication and hot electron injection.

- A high-sensitivity linear dichroism (LD) technique has been employed in studying the indirect orientation of benzene by solubilization in rod-shaped micelles in a system of cetyltrimethylammoniumbromide (CTAB): water, oriented by flow in a couvette device. The dependence of the LD signal due to the π-π* transitions in the benzene plane on the temperature, on the shear gradient and on the benzene concentration, has been investigated. The net positive LD, observed from the benzene chromophore, derives from benzene orientation at the surface of the rod-shaped micelles. The orientation of the micelle rods is very high and the system is suggested for use as a standard matrix for studying solubilized molecules in polarized spectroscopy.

- Efficient optical resolution of Co(acac)3 was obtained chromatographically in isopentane/ether solution by the use of a 30 cm D-lactose/Al2O3 column. The absolute configuration of (−)546Co(acac)3 was found to be by correlation with the chromatographic behaviour of other M(acac)3 complexex. The circular dichroism (CD) spectrum was scaled to molar unity by assuming perfect optical purity. The assignments of important bands in the UV and visible ranges are discussed with reference to available theoretical work.

- Internal stress levels and values of the activation volume have been evaluated from the kinetics of stress relaxation in annealed samples of LD and HD polyethylene. The initial deformation of the samples was varied, the maximum values amounting to ca. 1%. The temperature of the experiments was 24°C for LDPE, and 24°, 50°, and 69°C for HDPE. The internal stress level was found to be approximately proportional to the initial deformation and independent of the temperature used. Such internal stresses appear to be introduced upon deformation, since permanent stresses had been removed by careful annealing. The activation volume (v) was found to satisfy the relation vσ* ≈ 10kT, where σ* is the effective stress, i.e., the difference between the applied and internal stress, k is Boltzmann's constant, and T is the absolute temperature. This is in good agreement with results reported elsewhere for a wide variety of materials. This relation applies primarily to the exponential flow portion of the relaxation curves, but by a simple transformation the power‐law region can also be encompassed.
