  • Participatory as everyday life: from creativity-based initiative to the production of networked space in Southeast Asian cities
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Asian Journal of Media and Communication. - 2579-6119. ; 1:2, s. 123-136
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The notion of creative city has been extensively discussed both in academic debate as well as public discourse, including on Asian context. However, a tendency to study only on strategic government policies in relation to this matter has led many multidimensional aspects being left behind. One of these important aspects is the creativity-based activities initiated and conducted by local groups, communities, or collectives on a daily basis apart from so-called the official city programmes. This paper that derives from participatory paradigm takes into account this kind of practice, and seek the meanings of participatory culture as everyday life in urban context. The participatory initiatives discussed in this paper as the empirical cases are Tobucil & Klabs in Bandung, Indonesia and the street arts in George Town, Penang, Malaysia. Considering the current context that participation is getting more mediated (Livingstone, 2013), I employ digital ethnography and documentary photography as the methodological standpoints to understand the digital media practices, i.e. online engagement, that also intertwine with the offline engagement in these two particular cases. I argue, the creativity-based initiatives in these two Southeast Asian cities lead to new insight in understanding media and creativity in current Asia. Additionally, informed by the work of Henri Lefebvre on social space and developed it further, I also argue that this certain participatory culture lead to the production of networked space in relation to city identities. This could contribute in forming a new theoretical model in understanding the interplay between media, participation, and urban cultures in digital era.

  • Cooperation with Externalities and Uncertainty
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Networks and Spatial Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1572-9427 .- 1566-113X. ; 15:1, s. 1-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We introduce a new solution concept to problems with externalities, which is the first in the literature to take into account economic, regulatory and physical stability aspects of network problems in the very same model. A new class of cooperative games is defined where the worth of a coalition depends on the behavior of other players and on the state of nature as well. We allow for coalitions to form both before and after the resolution of uncertainty, hence agreements must be stable against both types of deviations. The appropriate extension of the classical core concept, the Sustainable Core, is defined for this new setup to test the stability of allocations in such a complex environment. A prominent application, a game of consumers and generators on an electrical energy transmission network is examined in details, where the power in- and outlets of the nodes have to be determined in a way, that if any line instantaneously fails, none of the remaining lines may be overloaded. We show that fulfilling this safety requirement in a mutually acceptable way can be achieved by choosing an element in the Sustainable Core.

  • Stochastic bankruptcy games
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Game Theory. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1432-1270 .- 0020-7276. ; 42:4, s. 973-988
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study bankruptcy problems where the estate and the claims have stochastic values and we allow these values to be correlated. We associate a transferable utility game with uncertainty to a stochastic bankruptcy problem and use the Weak Sequential Core as a solution concept for such games. We test the stability of a number of well known division rules in this stochastic setting and find that all of them are unstable, with the exception of the stochastic extension of the Constrained Equal Awards rule which leads to a Weak Sequential Core element.

    • Abstract in Uncoded languages A kooperatív játékelmélet egyik legjelentősebb eredménye, hogy számos konfliktushelyzetben stabil megoldást nyújt. Ez azonban csak statikus és determinisztikus környezetben alkalmazható jól. Most megmutatjuk a mag egy olyan kiterjesztését, a gyenge szekvenciális magot, mely képes valós, dinamikus, bizonytalan környezetben is eligazítást nyújtani. A megoldást a csődjátékok példájára alkalmazzuk, és segítségével megvizsgáljuk, hogy a pénzügyi irodalom ismert elosztási szabályai közül melyek vezetnek stabil, fenntartható eredményre.

  • Competition Makes Inspectors More Lenient : Evidence from the Motor Vehicle Inspection Market
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Review of Industrial Organization. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0889-938X .- 1573-7160. ; 61:1, s. 45-72
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate whether increased competition among inspection firms leads to an increase in the inspection pass rate in the Swedish car inspection market, which is heavily regulated and consciously designed to mitigate incentives to violate government regulations. We use a panel dataset that represent 22.5 million car roadworthiness tests that were conducted during the period 2010–2015. Fixed effects and instrumental variable estimations, which are used to account for the endogeneity of competition, show that inspection stations that operate in highly competitive markets are more lenient toward their customers than are stations that operate in less competitive markets.

  • Earth System Governance in Africa: knowledge and capacity needs
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability. - : Elsevier BV. - 1877-3443 .- 1877-3435. ; 14, s. 198-205
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traditional approaches for understanding environmental governance - such as environmental policy analysis or natural resources management - do not adequately address the gamut of human-natural system interactions within the context of the complex biogeophysical cycles and processes of the planet. This is perhaps more so in the African regional context where the complex relationships between modern and traditional governance systems and global change dynamics are arguably more pronounced. The Earth System Governance (ESG) Analytical Framework encompasses diverse systems and actors involved in the regulation of societal activities and behaviors vis-a-vis earth system dynamics. The concept encompasses a myriad of public and private actors and actor networks at all levels of policy and decision-making. The existence of, and interaction among, these diverse actors and systems, however, is under-researched in the African context. Various research approaches taken to address crucial global environmental change (GEC) challenges in Africa have proven to be inadequate because they tend to overlook the complex interactions among the various local actors, players, and indigenous conditions and practices vis-a-vis GEC system drivers and teleconnections. Similarly, the regional peculiarities in terms of governance typologies and sociocultural diversity highlight the need for nuanced understanding of the complex interactions and nexuses among multiple actors and interests and Earth system processes. However, this diversity and complexity has often been lost in generalized enquiries. We argue that examination of the governance-GEC nexus through the aid of the ESG Framework would provide a much broader and more helpful insight.

  • The Effects of Trees on Soils Chemistry
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Current Environmental Engineering. - : Bentham Science Publishers Ltd.. - 2212-7186 .- 2212-7178. ; 6:1, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Trees often affect the chemical properties of soil, positively or negatively. This paper studied the effects of Podocarpus falcatus and Markhamia lutea trees on soil chemis- try in Ruhande Arboretum, Rwanda. Soil samples were collected using Zigzag method from Arboretum forest of Ruhande at different depths (0-20, 20-40 and 40-60 cm). For each plot, 25 samples were collected to make one composite sample per plot for each depth. The re- sults showed that tree species contributed to the changes of soil chemistry along the depths of the soil layers. The laboratory analyses showed that there was a high significant influence of tree species on soil pH and Aluminum ions. However, it was observed that there is no significant influence of Podocarpus falcatus and Markhamia lutea species on the available phosphorus or on the total exchangeable acidity. On the other hand, analyzing soil samples under Markhamia lutea showed an increase in the total nitrogen and a decrease in the pH and available phosphorus. Therefore, it was recommended that under acidic soils, forestry and agroforestry actors should use less acidifying tree species, such as Markhamia lutea and Podocarpus falcatus.

  • An integrative phenotype–genotype approach using phenotypic characteristics from the UAE national diabetes study identifies HSD17B12 as a candidate gene for obesity and type 2 diabetes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Genes. - : MDPI AG. - 2073-4425. ; 11:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The United Arab Emirates National Diabetes and Lifestyle Study (UAEDIAB) has identified obesity, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, and dyslipidemia as common phenotypic characteristics correlated with diabetes mellitus status. As these phenotypes are usually linked with genetic variants, we hypothesized that these phenotypes share single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-clusters that can be used to identify causal genes for diabetes. Materials and We explored the National Human Genome Research Institute-European Bioinformatics Institute Catalog of Published Genome-Wide Association Studies (NHGRI-EBI GWAS) to list SNPs with documented association with the UAEDIAB-phenotypes as well as diabetes. The shared chromosomal regions affected by SNPs were identified, intersected, and searched for Enriched Ontology Clustering. The potential SNP-clusters were validated using targeted DNA next-generation sequencing (NGS) in two Emirati diabetic patients. RNA sequencing from human pancreatic islets was used to study the expression of identified genes in diabetic and non-diabetic donors. Eight chromosomal regions containing 46 SNPs were identified in at least four out of the five UAEDIAB-phenotypes. A list of 34 genes was shown to be affected by those SNPs. Targeted NGS from two Emirati patients confirmed that the identified genes have similar SNP-clusters. ASAH1, LRP4, FES, and HSD17B12 genes showed the highest SNPs rate among the identified genes. RNA-seq analysis revealed high expression levels of HSD17B12 in human islets and to be upregulated in type 2 diabetes (T2D) donors. Our integrative phenotype-genotype approach is a novel, simple, and powerful tool to identify clinically relevant potential biomarkers in diabetes. HSD17B12 is a novel candidate gene for pancreatic β-cell function.

  • Regionalization and fate specification in neurospheres: the role of Olig2 and Pax6
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience. - : Elsevier BV. - 1044-7431. ; 25:4, s. 664-678
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neurosphere cultures are widely used to propagate multipotent CNS precursors, but their differentiation into neurons or oligodendrocytes is rather poor. To elucidate fate determination in this system, we examined the expression and function of candidate transcription factors in neurospheres derived from different CNS regions during development and adulthood. We observed prominent down-regulation of most transcription factors present in telencephalic precursors upon growth factor exposure in neurosphere cultures while Olig1 and Olig2 expression was strongly up-regulated. Interference with Olig2 in neurospheres revealed its role in self-renewal during expansion and for the generation of neurons and oligodendrocytes during differentiation. We further show that neurogenesis becomes fully Pax6-dependent in the neurosphere culture system, independent of the region of origin, and that Pax6 overexpression is sufficient to direct almost all neurosphere-derived cells towards neurogenesis. Thus, a pathway combining transcription factors of dorsal and ventral regions is activated in the neurosphere culture model. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
