- Med temat program och praktik vill vi särskilt uppmana forskare att reflektera över vad som sägs och vad som görs inom hälso-, medicin- och sjukdomsrelaterade verksamheter, såväl i nutid som i det förflutna. Med program avses till exempel vårdpolitiska uttalanden och viljeyttringar av olika slag, beskrivningar eller bilder av hur t.ex. vård och omhändertagande bör vara beskaffad, läroböckers beskrivningar av önskvärda metoder, vårdformer, omhändertaganden, ingrepp etc., eller andra sorters vägledande utsagor, bl.a. i massmedia, som anger hur något bör vara beskaffat, ska utföras eller på annat sätt riktas mot en önskvärd omsättning i handling. Med praktik menas t.ex. handlingar, handgrepp och genomförande, tysta eller fotade i något slags program. Här ingår också upplevda och beskrivna relationer mellan t.ex. vårdtagare, klient eller kund och olika vårdgivare eller producenter av vård, behandling och omhändertagande eller andra aktiviteter, rum eller materiella alt. immateriella produkter inom medicin- och hälsofältet. Konferensen vill gärna att deltagarna reflekterar över dessa två begrepp, vart och ett eller i relation till varandra i empiriskt, metodologiskt, källkritiskt eller annat avseende. Konferensen välkomnar också bidrag om de epistemologiska, etiska och representationsteoretiska perspektiv och paradigm som ligger bakom, uttrycks genom eller utesluts från sådana program och praktiker som angivits ovan.

- In the German Democratic Republic (GDR) the overthrow of the socialist regime did not only bring about both an economic and political shift, it resulted also in the inclusion of the GDR into the Federal Republic of Germany. The fall of the Wall brought with it transformations in everyday life as well as changes in social identities.This study examines how people who grew up in the GDR define the East and the West in unified Germany, as well as identifying which concepts play a role in the self-interpretations given by former GDR citizens. Through applying discourse theory, I investigate how identities are partially fixed and change over time, relating this always to historically situated discourses. In the analysis, East and West are considered as floating signifiers, which, through articulations made with other categories such as class, nation, place and gender, come to be filled with meaning. The study is based on twenty-five life story interviews conducted in Eastern Germany. The group of interviewees consisted of fifteen women and ten men born in the GDR between the years of 1970 and 1979, all of whom had different levels of education.The demise of the socialist state and the transition to a capitalist society is central in the interviewees’ life stories. Their narratives about the past are formed in a discursive order other than the one in which the events themselves took place. Conversely, the past is used as a foil against which the present is compared. With the dislocation, the interviewees have developed a reflexive stance to both themselves and the world. The study reveals both how East and West are still used to make the world intelligible in a number of fields and, at the same time, how these same concepts are transcended. It shows in what ways the interviewees employ different strategies to adapt to the new circumstances and to handle a potentially marked position in unified Germany.

- A crucial debate is under way concerning the public's participation in biotechnology decision-making processes. This study, concerning the policy process around xenotransplantation (XTP) in Latvia and Sweden in the period 1970–2004, focuses on how scientific experts and politicians view the public and the public's participation in the process of developing policy regarding XTP. Drawing on interviews with actors involved in XTP in each country, we analyse and explain the inclusion and exclusion of publics in policy decision-making processes. In particular, we highlight the significance of the role of scientists and politicians in generating discourses which exclude the public from participation in policy decision-making.
