  • Oral history, constructions and deconstructions of narratives : Intersections of class, gender, locality, nation and religion in narratives from a Jewish woman in Sweden
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: ENQUIRE. - Nottingham : University of Nottingham. ; 2:1, s. 1-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we elaborate on the possibility to combine a social constructivist perspective and oral history within one methodological framework in order to explore how identities are narrated and negotiated in relation to different situations, contexts and interviewers. In oral history, the purpose is often to “give voice” to marginalized or forgotten individuals or groups, to listen to their stories and give them the possibility to speak from their perspectives. We agree with these emancipatory aims of oral history. Simultaneously we deconstruct and analyze interviews in order to investigate identity constructions. We work with the concepts of intersectionality and narrated identity, which allow us to investigate how groups and individuals that are marginalized and discriminated negotiate their own and other identities. At the same time it is unclear if our interviewees understand these kinds of analysis of their narratives. In order to combine a social constructivist perspective and oral history in a fruitful way, we must be aware of this relation of power and explain to the interviewees what we are doing and why we are doing it. In a broader research perspective this deconstructive approach illustrates interesting assumptions about multidimensional identity constructions.

  • Biometrics as imperialism: age assessments of young asylum seekers in Denmark
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Race & Class. - : SAGE Publications. - 0306-3968 .- 1741-3125. ; 62:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores medical assessments of the age of unaccompanied minors seeking asylum in Denmark, to show how, through the medical and bureaucratic aspects of the process, it serves as an imperialist technology of control, as those judged under 18 have greater protection in the asylum system. Since the biggest group of people who are age-estimated in Denmark are Afghans, the author looks at the relationship between Denmark and Afghanistan and draws on interviews with people who underwent the process. By connecting medical documents with biometric measurement in colonial contexts and the current expansion of biometric surveillance, the author argues that the collection of intrusive physical data from Afghan minors is to be understood as a colonial mapping of the body. The Danish Immigration Service’s age decision-making process articulates a form of administrative rule that works to depoliticise questions of dispossession and death, and is a form of colonial violence enabled by humanitarian discourse and law.

  • Gender-based violence (GBV) against women with precarious legal status and their access to social protection in advanced welfare societies: an analytical contribution to reconstruct the research field and its institutional development
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Comparative Migration Studies. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2214-594X. ; 10:40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to map the emergence and development of a research field around the topic of “gender-based violence (GBV) against women with precarious legal status and their access to social protection in advanced welfare societies”. We explore the academic knowledge production around this topic as a specific research field by using bibliometric data. We investigate the place occupied by scholars who publish in well-established journals, and their disciplines, in order to understand the relevance of different disciplines and groups of researchers in the knowledge production within the field. Our methodology includes analysis of co-authorship, cross-country collaboration, and co-citation. The search strategy is informed by discursive practices and knowledge production by influential international civil society actors (CSAs) involved in framing welfare responses to GBV against women with precarious legal status. Our results suggest that the knowledge produced in the field increased in terms of number of publications between 2010 and 2021, indicating a process of institutionalisation. Disciplines oriented towards certain groups of professionals such as clinical psychology, medicine, health, nursing, and social work, affiliated mainly to institutions in the US, Canada, and the EU, have a prominent role in knowledge production in this field. In our conclusions, we discuss the implications of these results in relation to gender studies and migration studies, along with some limitations of the use of bibliometrics software combined with an intersectionality approach.

  • The Institutionalization of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Migrant Women’s Access to Social Protection System in Advanced Welfare Societies.
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: AG About Gender. - 2279-5057. ; 11:22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study critically engages with the knowledge produced in the field of gender-based violence (GBV) in the context of migration. The focus is specifically on empirical studies that look at women whose immigrant status is precarious, which means that their pathway to citizenship is uncertain and dependent on others. Some examples are migrant women students, asylum claimants and refused asylum claims, individuals whose permit is expired, spouses, and migrant seasonal workers in the sex industry, domestic sector, manufacturing, and agriculture. The contribution of this systematic literature review is the investigation of how researchers conceptualize GBV against women having a precarious legal status and their access to social protection in welfare advanced societies. Data were identified and selected by combining the Intersectionality-based Policy Approach (IBPA) with the evidenced-based protocol of systematic reviews and were analyzed with a Qualitative Content Analysis (QCA) to deconstruct categorical tags used to frame both migratory status and GBV (e.g. trafficking, domestic violence, female genital mutilation). The discussion will be made on how classification systems influence both the framing of the problem (GBV) and the social protection responses (solutions/interventions) to it.

  • The power of positioning: : On the normalisation of gender,race/ethnicity, nation and class positions in a Swedish social work textbook
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Gender and Education. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0954-0253 .- 1360-0516. ; 23:5, s. 535-548
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents a feminist reading of a Swedish social work academic textbook as a case study. We use a discourse analytic approach and positioning theory, focusing on author positions through different story lines. The aim is to make visible how differences are created and positions of the author/reader normalised in terms of gender, race/ethnicity and class. The analysis illustrates how the organisation of the book privileges a particular story line by presenting gender research in a special section of the book and as a perspective. A neutral, unmarked author position is assumed, presented as a common 'we' by identifying 'women researchers' and 'feminist' points of departure as different. If the unmarked author/reader 'we' position appears desirable and morally superior, the clients' gender, ethnicity and class are often openly discussed in relation to social problems, positioning them as 'the other'. Finally there is also a story line of more critical and ambivalent knowledge positions.

  • Knocking on the Doors of Integration : Swedish Integration Policy and the Production of a National Space
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of International Migration and Integration. - : Springer Netherlands. - 1488-3473 .- 1874-6365. ; 21:3, s. 861-877
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article contributes to theoretical discussions on how immigrant integration is produced as a part of redefining national policy to local everyday practice, and what this tells us about the society in which the policy is formed. Integration is from this perspective a way to understand imagined social communities, how they are produced, who is considered to belong, and who is not. Document analysis and interviews with immigrants, local politicians, and officials in small- and medium-sized Swedish towns give insights into both what taken-for-granted assumptions the integration policy builds on and reproduces, and what consequences the integration policy have for the persons the policy is intended for. It is shown that the Swedish integration policy is itself a part of the production of a Swedish space as a container with closed doors, where immigrants are not given equal access and possibilities. This is created by putting sameness and difference at the core of the integration policy and by describing integration as an act of entering the Swedish space.
