  • Multilevel Monte Carlo methods for computing failure probability of porous media flow systems

    • We study improvements of the standard and multilevel Monte Carlo method for point evaluation of the cumulative distribution function (failure probability) applied to porous media two-phase flow simulations with uncertain permeability. To illustrate the methods, we study an injection scenario where we consider sweep efficiency of the injected phase as quantity of interest and seek the probability that this quantity of interest is smaller than a critical value. In the sampling procedure, we use computable error bounds on the sweep efficiency functional to identify small subsets of realizations to solve highest accuracy by means of what we call selective refinement. We quantify the performance gains possible by using selective refinement in combination with both the standard and multilevel Monte Carlo method. We also identify issues in the process of practical implementation of the methods. We conclude that significant savings in computational cost are possible for failure probability estimation in a realistic setting using the selective refinement technique, both in combination with standard and multilevel Monte Carlo.

  • Evaluation of Pressure Generated by Resistors From Different Positive Expiratory Pressure Devices

    • BACKGROUND: Breathing exercises with positive expiratory pressure (PEP) are used to improve pulmonary function and airway clearance. Different PEP devices are available, but there have been no studies that describe the pressure generated by different resistors. The purpose of this study was to compare pressures generated from the proprietary resistor components of 4 commercial flow-dependent PEP valves with all other parameters kept constant. METHODS: Resistors from 4 flow-regulated PEP devices (Pep/Rmt system, Wellspect HealthCare; Pipe P breathing exerciser, Koo Medical Equipment; Mini-PEP, Philips Respironics [including resistors by Rusch]; and 15-mm endo-adapter, VBM Medizintechnik) were tested randomly by a blinded tester at constant flows of 10 and 18 L/min from an external gas system. All resistors were tested 3 times. RESULTS: Resistors with a similar diameter produced statistically significant different pressures at the same flow. The differences were smaller when the flow was 10 L/min compared with 18 L/min. The differences were also smaller when the diameter of the resistor was increased. The pressures produced by the 4 resistors of the same size were all significantly different when measuring 1.5- and 2.0-mm resistors at a flow of 10 L/min and 2.0-mm resistors at a flow of 18 L/min (P < .001). There were no significant differences between any of the resistors when testing sizes of 4.5 and 5.0 mm at either flow. The Mini-PEP and adapter resistors gave the highest pressures. CONCLUSIONS: Pressures generated by the different proprietary resistor components of 4 commercial PEP devices were not comparable, even though the diameter of the resistors is reported to be the same. The pressures generated were significantly different, particularly when using small-diameter resistors at a high flow. Therefore, the resistors may not be interchangeable. This is important information for clinicians, particularly when considering PEP for patients who do not tolerate higher pressures. (C) 2015 Daedalus Enterprises

  • High-quality annotations for deep learning enabled plaque analysis in SCAPIS cardiac computed tomography angiography

    • Background: Plaque analysis with coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) is a promising tool to identify high risk of future coronary events. The analysis process is time-consuming, and requires highly trained readers. Deep learning models have proved to excel at similar tasks, however, training these models requires large sets of expert-annotated training data. The aims of this study were to generate a large, high-quality annotated CCTA dataset derived from Swedish CArdioPulmonary BioImage Study (SCAPIS), report the reproducibility of the annotation core lab and describe the plaque characteristics and their association with established risk factors.Methods and results: The coronary artery tree was manually segmented using semi-automatic software by four primary and one senior secondary reader. A randomly selected sample of 469 subjects, all with coronary plaques and stratified for cardiovascular risk using the Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation (SCORE), were analyzed. The reproducibility study (n = 78) showed an agreement for plaque detection of 0.91 (0.84-0.97). The mean percentage difference for plaque volumes was-0.6% the mean absolute percentage difference 19.4% (CV 13.7%, ICC 0.94). There was a positive correlation between SCORE and total plaque volume (rho = 0.30, p < 0.001) and total low attenuation plaque volume (rho = 0.29, p < 0.001).Conclusions: We have generated a CCTA dataset with high-quality plaque annotations showing good reproducibility and an expected correlation between plaque features and cardiovascular risk. The stratified data sampling has enriched high-risk plaques making the data well suited as training, validation and test data for a fully automatic analysis tool based on deep learning.

The molecular solubility of softwood arabinoglucuronoxylan (AGX) has been thoroughly investigated, and it has been shown that the chemical and physical structures of the extracted hemicellulose are not significantly influenced by different purification steps, but a transient molecular solubility of AGX was observed in aqueous media at low concentrations (1 g/L) when the dissolved macromolecules had a hydrodynamic diameter of up to 10 nm. A phase separation was detected when the concentration was increased to 15 g/L leading to an association of the smaller molecules into fractal structures with a considerably larger diameter, even though the dispersions were still transparent to ocular inspection. Dynamic Light Scattering and Cryo-Transmission Electron Microscopy showed dimensions in the range of 1000 nm. The phase separation of the sample was further characterized by estimating the χ-interaction parameter of AGX in water using the Flory-Huggins theory, and the results supported that water is a poor solvent for AGX. This behavior is crucial when films and hydrogels based on these biopolymers are made, since the association will dramatically affect barrier and mechanical properties of films made from these materials.

    • The increasing number of nanomaterial based consumer products raises concerns about their possible impact on the environment. This study provides an assessment of the effluent from a commercially available silver nanowashing machine. The washing machine released silver in its effluent at an average concentration of 11 mu g L(-1), as determined by inductive coupled mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The presence of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was confirmed by single particle ICP-MS as well as ion selective electrode measurements and filtration techniques. Size measurements showed particles to be in the defined nanosize range, with an average size of 10 nm measured with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and 60-100 nm determined with nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA). The effluent was shown to have negative effects on a natural bacterial community as its abundance was clearly reduced when exposed to the nanowash water. If washing machines capable of producing AgNPs become a common feature of households in the future, wastewater will contain significant loadings of AgNPs which might be released into the environment.
