  • Electromagnetically Controlled Biological Assembly of Aligned Bacterial Cellulose Nanofibers
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Annals of Biomedical Engineering. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1573-9686 .- 0090-6964. ; 38:8, s. 2475-2484
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have developed a new biofabrication process in which the precise control of bacterial motion is used to fabricate customizable networks of cellulose nanofibrils. This article describes how the motion of Acetobacter xylinum can be controlled by electric fields while the bacteria simultaneously produce nanocellulose, resulting in networks with aligned fibers. Since the electrolysis of water due to the application of electric fields produces the oxygen in the culture media far from the liquid-air boundary, aerobic cellulose production in 3D structures is readily achievable. Five separate sets of experiments were conducted to demonstrate the assembly of nanocellulose by A. xylinum in the presence of electric fields in micro-and macro-environments. This study demonstrates a new concept of bottom up material synthesis by the control of a biological assembly process.

  • Some Future Perspectives in Ambient Pressure X-ray Spectroscopies : Atmospheric Pressure, Spatially Resolved and Multi-modal Experiments
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Ambient Pressure Spectroscopy in Complex Chemical Environments. - Washington, DC : American Chemical Society. - 0097-6156 .- 1947-5918. - 9780841298125 - 9780841298118 ; 1396, s. 333-358
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter introduces a selection of novel and emerging concepts in ambient pressure X-ray spectroscopies. Technical considerations and first photoemission experiments performed in and above 1 bar pressure are described. Then, X-ray spectroscopy experiments that provide high lateral (microscopy) and depth (X-ray standing-waves) resolution in ambient environments are discussed. The final part of the chapter introduces recent developments in multimodal instrumentation, such as the combination of ambient pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy with Infrared spectroscopy and X-ray scattering.

  • Primary hyperhidrosis : prevalence and impacts for the individual
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Primary hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating, is a condition with unknown prevalence in many parts of the world. The disease debuts in adolescence and it affects men and women in equal proportions. A genetic background exists and the most common localisation on the body for excessive sweating is the axillary region. It is known that primary hyperhidrosis reduces quality of life and interferes with daily activities. Affected individuals often hide their sweating problems and the disease may lead to social withdrawal and isolation. Although botulinum toxin is an effective and available treatment, relatively few persons with primary hyperhidrosis seek medical healthcare and a minority of those are men.We investigated the prevalence of primary hyperhidrosis in Sweden and how the disease impairs quality of life, changes in daily activities, signs of depression and anxiety and alcohol consumption before and after treatment with botulinum toxin. The severity of hyperhidrosis according to the affected body sites was also investigated. Further on we explored mens experiences living with primary hyperhidrosis by interviews and content analysis. Our results showed that primary hyperhidrosis occurs in 5.5% of the Swedish population. The disease reduces quality of life and affects mainly the psychological health of the individuals. Persons with palmar and axillary hyperhidrosis rated their symptoms more severe and with much higher impact on their quality of life compared to persons suffering from hyperhidrosis elswhere on the body. Individuals with axillary hyperhidrosis more often reported a later debut and signs of peripheral vasoconstrictions were more common in this group compared to individuals with palmar hyperhidrosis. This made us believe that factors other than genetics seem to play a role in triggering axillary hyperhidrosis. Treatment with botulinum toxin A had a significant effect in reducing the symptoms and their interferences on daily life while increasing the overall quality of life. Signs of depression, stress and anxiety were also significantly reduced by treatment. This treatment was safe and no serious side-effects were noted. Qualitative content analysis of interviews with 15 men suffering from primary hyperhidrosis resulted in the theme: To be captured in a filthy body. The experiences of men with excessive sweating were thus interpreted as stigmatising. Stigma has a negative effect on mental health which reinforces our findings in quantitative studies when investigating quality of life. It is our assumption that the symptoms act as a vicious circle reducing quality of life, stigmatising the individual and limiting daily interactions. Addressing hyperhidrosis with information when the disease debuts in young people could reduce the stigma and enable early intervention via healthcare which may have a significant effect on the life of those affected.

  • Weighted Colimits of 2-Representations and Star Algebras
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Applied Categorical Structures. - : Springer Nature. - 0927-2852 .- 1572-9095. ; 31:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We apply the theory of weighted bicategorical colimits to study the problem of existence and computation of such colimits of birepresentations of finitary bicategories. The main application of our results is the complete classification of simple transitive birepresentations of a bicategory studied previously by Zimmermann. The classification confirms a conjecture he has made.

  • Identification by mass spectrometry and immunoblotting of xenogeneic antigens in theN- andO-glycomes of porcine, bovine and equine heart tissues
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Glycoconjugate Journal. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0282-0080 .- 1573-4986. ; 37, s. 485-498
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Animal bioprosthetic heart valves (BHV) are used to replace defective valves in patients with valvular heart disease. Especially young BHV recipients may experience a structural valve deterioration caused by an immune reaction in which alpha-Gal and Neu5Gc are potential target antigens. The expression of these and other carbohydrate antigens in animal tissues used for production of BHV was explored. Protein lysates of porcine aortic and pulmonary valves, and porcine, bovine and equine pericardia were analyzed by Western blotting using anti-carbohydrate antibodies and lectins.N-glycans were released by PNGase F digestion andO-glycans by beta-elimination. Released oligosaccharides were analyzed by liquid chromatography - tandem mass spectrometry. In total, 102N-glycans and 40O-glycans were identified in animal heart tissue lysates. TheN- andO-glycan patterns were different between species. alpha-Gal and Neu5Gc were identified on bothN- andO-linked glycans,N,N '-diacetyllactosamine (LacdiNAc) onN-glycans only and sulfatedO-glycans. The relative amounts of alpha-Gal-containingN-glycans were higher in bovine compared to equine and porcine pericardia. In contrast to the restricted number of proteins carrying alpha-Gal and LacdiNAc, the distribution of proteins carrying Neu5Gc-determinants varied between species and between different tissues of the same species. Porcine pericardium carried the highest level of Neu5Gc-sialylatedO-glycans, and bovine pericardium the highest level of Neu5Gc-sialylatedN-glycans. The identifiedN-andO-linked glycans, some of which may be immunogenic and remain in BHVs manufactured for clinical use, could direct future genetic engineering to prevent glycan expression rendering the donor tissues less immunogenic in humans.
