Deriving wood quality properties through their links with tree and stand attributes

- One of the important Canadian Wood Fibre Centre’s mandates is to develop methods to facilitate the flow of information on the wood quality and quantity along the chain of forest values. Among its research projects, one entitled Enhanced Forest Inventory aims to produce tools to map the wood attributes in terms of physico-mechanical properties by using prediction models based on the attributes of the forest tree and stand. The main inputs of these models come from non-destructive measurements on standing trees (acoustic probe, resistograph, terrestrial lidar) and from spatial data (aerial lidar). Among the obtained results, the correlations are significant between acoustic velocity, drill resistance, tree and stand attributes. These results open the prospect of using the data of non destructive measurements such as acoustic probe and resistograph as complementary input with tree and stand attributes (dbh, crown, and competition index) for prescribing the intensity of thinning to a desired level of wood density.

- Då sanden från konstgräsplaner även innehåller rester av plast och gummi från infill och grässtrån så är sanden inte lämplig att återbruka exempelvis på golfbanor eller liknande, men det finns andra alternativa återvinningsmetoder. I det här projektet har olika hanteringsmetoder undersökts för att se hur väl de fungerar och de har även kartlagts för att se var dessa går att finna i närheten av de konstgräsplaner där problemet uppstår. Det har tagits fram ett antal rekommendationer för att få ett bättre resursutnyttjande och för att minska risken för spridning av mikroplast från sanden.

- The circular economy promotes the reuse of waste and recycling processes in agroindustry. Literature has focused on the development of frameworks related to the evaluation of environmental improvements brought by the biomass and biofuel supply chains. However, there is still a gap related to comprehensively understanding the costs of these supply chains. In this paper, the concept of Integrated Biomass Logistics Centers (IBLCs), developed in a European research project, is framed into a supply chain recycling wastes frm the agricultural sector and producing bio-commodities and/or intermediate bio-based feedstocks. In particular, this study, by using SCOR and Activity Based Costing, proposes an integrated framework to comprehensively evaluate costs of IBLCs' supply chains. erved.

- The purpose of this investigation is to emphasize the effects of security on transport performance. The methodology is based on the analysis of a large workshop with security experts and multiple case studies, where data is collected by means of observations, and unstructured and semi-structured interviews. The findings from the empirical data seem to show that security measures may cause lower operational performance. Therefore, this paper discusses the importance of developing security capabilities to be integrated in existing logistics information systems. Only in this way will transport companies develop the capability to fully realize wins in terms of both security and efficiency.

- Purpose: the purpose of this paper is to identify and evaluate critical features of anti-counterfeiting pharmaceutical packages.Research Approach: the research approach is based on a literature review and a survey study based on the Kano methodology.Findings and Originality: critical features for anti-counterfeiting pharmaceutical packages are identified and classified in security and performance based. Only two security features related to manipulation/tamper evidence and traceability are scored as must-be requirements. The majority of performance related features are instead considered as attractive. Hence, existing products may lack these functionalities and if included in new packages, customers might be surprised or delighted.Research Impact: the study contributes with a list of criteria to be considered to evaluate pharmaceutical packages in terms of anti-counterfeiting security and logistics related performance.Practical Impact: developers, users and public agencies are provided with insights about how different features related to security and logistics performance are perceived by potential users.

- This paper considers the modular control framework for energy and emissions management developed within the IMplementation of Powertrain Control for Economic and Clean Real driving emIssion and fuel ConsUMption (IMPERIUM) project. The framework is proposed for a long haul truck equipped with a 13 L Volvo Diesel engine and it aims to improve the operating system efficiency. Its main function blocks are: Transport Mission Management, Vehicle Environment, Route Situation, Traffic Situation, Vehicle Motion Management and Device Abstractions. The focus of the paper is the development and the evaluation of three key functions of the control framework: the Integrated Engine and After-Treatment System (EATS) Supervisory Controller and two local controllers, for the engine and the after-treatment. Whilst for the last two only a brief introduction is given, for the Integrated Engine and EATS Supervisory Controller a detailed description of the Optimal Control Problem (OCP) formulation and its solution strategies is provided. A controller is proposed based on a moving horizon Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC), which is tested in a simulation environment and benchmarked against Dynamic Programming (DP) strategies.

- Cyber-Physical Systems are inherently complex. Reducing the design complexity of such systems, is beneficial for scalability of the design. In this paper, a method for design optimization of these systems is proposed to facilitate the decomposition of the optimization problem for the whole system into smaller sub-problems and coordination of modular solutions to reach the desired optimum. The coordinated solutions are either identical to the optimal solution of the complex optimization problem for the system as a whole or within an acceptable error margin of it. To demonstrate the efficacy of the method, it is applied to a mechatronic case study. The results provide evidence for the potential feasibility of the methodology in terms of meeting the requirements on the solutions, while reducing the computational demand of the design process.
