  • Teacher Education and the Core of Citizenship Education for Young Children
  • 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract This paper is a critical reflection on the basic ideas underpinning the new teacher education programmes at Malmö University. The main idea has been to combine subject studies, didactics and pedagogy in teacher education. We claim that personal encounters are one of the prerequisites for student teachers to learn and in depth understand in order to be able to translate into teaching. In the paper we will present and discuss some examples of personal encounters in relation to Citizenship Education within the main-subject “Social Science Subject and Children’s Learning”. This will illustrates a possible way of the construction of meaning in teacher education.

  • 'Women's Unarmed Uprising Against War': A Swedish peace protest in 1935
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Peace Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1460-3578 .- 0022-3433. ; 40:4, s. 395-412
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the summer of 1935, approximately 20,000 Swedish women mobilized in a peaceful action the Women's Unarmed Uprising Against War. The manifestation was a protest against rearmament and, in particular, against a militarization of everyday life that might result from a civil defense buildup. Thus, in a spirit of solidarity women were encouraged to refuse to use gas masks or evacuate into cellars and air-raid shelters in the event of an air raid. Only then would men realize their responsibility, lay down their weapons, and solve the conflict at the negotiating table. The action was connected to a radical pacifistic tradition in which male conscientious objectors, among others, and the example of Gandhi were prominent. Liberal and Social Democrat women and members of the Swedish section of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) carried out the action. The action was formulated in such a manner that women across the country were asked to vote for those who could serve in a women's parliament. The goal was to create an international uprising among women by influencing the League of Nations' delegates and the women's organizations in Geneva. In the same year, the central body of WILPF had decided to support an international peace plan, the People's Mandate to End War. The mandate's aim was to present demands for disarmament to governments in different countries. This article examines why the Swedish women assumed a more radical position than that stated in the people's mandate; what kinds of peace efforts in Sweden made such a radical, pacifistic women's action possible; and what went on when the initiators attempted to influence WILPF, on an international level, into incorporating the radical protest into the people's mandate campaign.

  • Pressurised hot water extraction with on-line particle formation by supercritical fluid technology
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Food Chemistry. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-7072 .- 0308-8146. ; 134:4, s. 1724-1731
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work, an on-line process for pressurised hot water extraction (PHWE) of antioxidants from plants as well as drying of the extract in one step by particle formation based on the use of supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) has been developed. This process has been called WEPO (R), water extraction and particle formation on-line. With this process, dried extracts from onion with the same composition of quercetin derivatives as non-dried extracts have been obtained as a fine powder with spherical particles from 250 nm to 4 mu m in diameter. The major compounds present in the extract were quercetin-3,4'-diglucoside, quercetin-4'-glucoside and quercetin. An auxiliary inert gas (hot N-2) was used to enhance the drying process. Parameters such as temperature (120 degrees C), SC-CO2 and N-2 pressures (80 and 12.5 bar, respectively) and flow rate of SC-CO2 (10 ml/min), have been settled by trial-and-error in order to achieve a fine and constant spray formation. Water content, size and morphology, antioxidant capacity and quercetin content of the particles were studied to evaluate the efficiency of the WEPO process. Results were compared with the ones from extracts obtained by continuous flow PHWE followed by freeze-drying. Results showed that both processes gave similar results in terms of antioxidant capacity, concentration of quercetin derivatives and water content, while only WEPO was able to produce defined spherical particles smaller than 4 mu m. • Living with heart failure without realising : A qualitative patient study
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Community Nursing. - : MA Healthcare Ltd.. - 1462-4753 .- 2052-2215. ; 17:12, s. 630-637
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Heart failure is an important problem in Swedish primary healthcare as in the UK. In spite of that little is known about how people with heart failure experience support from primary healthcare. This paper investigates how people with heart failure experience support in primary healthcare. Semi structured interviews were conducted with five men and five women, born 1922-1951. The interviews were analyzed with qualitative content analysis in accordance with Graneheim and Lundman (2004). The participants experienced they had not received information about their diagnosis or about the cause of their condition. They had not been informed they had heart failure. Instead the participants believed their symptoms were caused by age, thus being part of normal ageing. They did not experience they needed care or support to cope with illness or disease. Instead their main needs for support in daily life concerned help with practical matters. There is a risk primary healthcare abandons people with heart failure meaning the patients are forced to develop strategies on their own in order to manage symptoms. When inadequately informed there is also a risk they make up their own explanations signifying possible difficulties to handle their health situation.

  • Dynamic pH determination at high pressure of aqueous additive mixtures in contact with dense CO2
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Supercritical Fluids. - : Elsevier BV. - 0896-8446 .- 1872-8162. ; 136, s. 95-101
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A system consisting of a high-pressure tolerant microfluidic glass chip, high-speed absorbance imaging, and image processing has been developed to study rapid dynamic events like pH change in a multiphase flow. The system gives both kinetic and quantitative equilibrated information. By tracking the interactions of aqueous additive mixtures and liquid CO2, at 80 bar and 24 °C, under flow, measurement at a given P, T condition is done in 0.25 s. The acidification rate to steady state was found to be mass transport limited, occurring in less than 1 s. For 30 mM of the additives ammonium acetate and ammonium formate, equilibrium pH of 4.5 and 4.1, respectively, was seen. These additives are of key importance in common mobile phases used in SFC.
