  • Defining lifestyle
  • 2007
  • In: Environmental Sciences. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1744-4225 .- 1569-3430. ; 4:2, s. 63-73
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The concept of lifestyle is commonly used as something that needs to be changed if we want to achieve a sustainable development. But what does the concept of lifestyle mean? How is it defined? Educators and politicians, among others, need a definition to use the concept and understand how it is related to sustainable development. This paper suggests a plural definition based on a level analysis. There are four levels, from individual to global, on which lifestyle can be understood. There is also an alternative definition on the individual level from a cognitive science perspective. We need to understand the concept of lifestyle at these levels to analyse the relationship to sustainable development problems. Perhaps we should not look at lifestyle as a problem per se, but at the problems used to elaborate a lifestyle.

  • Kvinnors företagande : arbetsmarknadsbeteende och organisatorisk lösning
  • 2007
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Health and development: HIV/AIDS and the double appropriation of human security discourse by practitioners of female circumcision and development NGOs in Cameroon
  • 2007
  • In: Journal of Human Security 3 (1), 45. ; 3:1
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Abstract: The aim of this paper is to demonstrate ethnographically that within the new institutional context of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, development NGOs intervening in the fight against female circumcision by using the language of human security have instead produced a backlash marked by resistance and contestation. I argue that the issue of health security underpins the agenda of both the state and transnational stakeholders who use the 'modernist' language of security to reinforce their collective positions towards practitioners of ritual female circumcision. The advent of the HIV/AIDS pandemic reinvigorated debates about human security which contributed to the framing of practices such as ritual bodily 'mutilation' in a human security context. The health security ('harmful health effect') paradigm that dominates anti-mutilation advocacy is a double-edged sword. While this framework reduces the complexity of ritual mutilation to health alone, some segments of circumcising communities among the Ejaghams of southwest Cameroon frame the issue of female circumcision in terms of 'social security'. This exemplifies competing health and security views, 'local' and 'scientific' knowledge systems. Within the new medical and institutional context and the dynamics of the AIDS pandemic, a double appropriation of the concept of 'security' is evident by some segments of the Ejagham community, by the state, and by anti-mutilation advocates. This has limited the success of the anti-mutilation campaigns, especially as these 'risk' and 'health security' concepts do not always reflect the people's lived experiences, partly because of the activists' 'failure' to domesticate these concepts.

  • (O)möjliga positioner. Familjer från Iran & postkoloniala reflektioner.
  • 2007
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The thesis is based on narratives by families originating from Iran, now residing in Sweden, Göteborg. The focus is the accounts of family, gender, relations, belongings (and class).Point of departure is a representation of “immigrant families” as problematic in the media and public debate. The overall aim is to deconstruct this image through the narratives of the families, and to suggest and present other and more complex accounts of families from Iran in Sweden. To reach the objectives of the study postcolonial theory, feminist post structuralism, deconstruction and discourse analysis are used as theoretical and methodological tools. Analytical focus are on doing family, gender, belongings and place. The empirical material consists of 31 interviews with 19 parents and young adults in seven families. The parents all have grown up in Iran before migrating to Sweden. The narratives are looked upon as accounts of discursive experience. The use of discourse in the narratives, in order to do oneself, family, gender, belongings and place, is presented as positions of the subjects. To inhabit a position is to “do identity”. Each family member uses a number of positions depending on theme, and how the narrative is situated. This is related to the theoretical notion of multiple subjects. The findings show that possibilities of differentiated positions and complex expressions, accounted for as an immigrant family, are severely restrained. However the narratives also show a large amount of creative, opposing, and radical expressions. The latter are considered as counter histories and becomes subversive manifestations. The positions occupied by the family members arrived at in accordance with a hegemonic discursive formation containing, on the one hand, “Swedishness”, modernity and democracy, and, on the other, “Iranianess”, tradition and oppression. This suggests that the family members position themselves and their families in relation to a notion of the Swedish, heterosexual, nuclear family as considered normal – and/or a notion of the Iranian, troubled family as subordinated. In a first position the family members do themselves and their families as “Swedish”, modern and democratic, while “Iranianess” is considered undesirable. This suggests being forced to choose either “Swedishness” or “Iranianess”. A second position implies that the family members position themselves and their families as both “Swedish”, democratic and modern and Iranian. The third position suggests rejecting the hegemonic discourse and placing oneself and ones family, as well as generalized notions of family, as neither “Swedish” nor “Iranian” and thus joining the struggle of defining discursive reality. The findings distorts the conception of “immigrant families” as victims of “cultural conflicts”. And thus, refutes the representation of families from Iran as “different” in comparison to “Swedish families” on the basis of national and “cultural” origins. In this discussion the perception of Iran is crucial. That is, if the concept of modernity is restricted to Western societies/practices, the notion of families from Iran in Sweden (or in Iran) will continue to be excluding and exclusive. This in turn implies being able to comprehend Iranian society, and families from Iran, as complex, and as a ground of differentiated expressions.

  • Välfärdspolitik i praktiken : om perspektiv och metoder i forskning
  • 2007
  • Editorial collection (pop. science, debate, etc.)abstract

  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Over the past few decades new ways of conceiving the relation between people, practices and institutions have been developed, enabling an understanding of human conduct in complex situations that is distinctive from traditional psychological and sociological conceptions. This distinctiveness is derived from a sophisticated analytic approach to social action which combines conversation analysis with the fresh treatment of epistemology, mind, cognition and personality developed in discursive psychology. This text is the first to showcase and promote this new method of discursive research in practice. Featuring contributions from a range of international academics, both pioneers in the field and exciting new researchers, this book illustrates an approach to social science issues that cuts across the traditional disciplinary divisions to provide a rich participant-based understanding of action.

  • Governance of public-private corporations in provision of local Italian utilities
  • 2007
  • In: International Public Management Review. ; 8:1, s. 132-153
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This work proposes to examine the governance structure of public-private corporations that manage local utilities (water, energy and multi-utility) in Italy. The objective is the verification, from a qualitative point of view, that the governance structure adequately guarantees the reconciliation of interests of different categories of shareholders (public and private), as local public service corporations increases their own shareholding basis by involving financial and industrial shareholders who bring with them both financial and industrial interests. The work shows that the corporate governance structure is one important tool in the end of the public owner in order to steer and control the public and private corporations.
