- Some types of structures with extreme effective properties are considered by means of the homogenization theory. We discuss the reiterated cell-structure which consists of m different micro-levels. Our numerical results indicate that the limit proven by Lukkassen [6] corresponding to the case 771 = 00 serves as a surprisingly good approximation of the effective properties for any value of m. In particular, this observation yields a simple approximate-formula for the classical coated rectangle-assemblages. Some applications are also presented; e.g. we discuss concrete examples of optimal design of core material in sandwich constructions.

- We obtain general bounds on the torsional rigidity and give examples on how these bounds can be used to obtain estimates and simple formulae which yield more accurate information than the classical treatment. Moreover, we use the homogenization theory to estimate the limit of the torsional rigidity when the characteristic length of the composite microstructures decreases.
