- An adaptive oligopoly model, where the demand function is isoelastic and the competitors operate under constant marginal costs, is considered. The Cournot equilibrium point then loses stability through a subcritical Neimark bifurcation. The present paper focuses some global bifurcations, which precede the Neimark bifurcation, and produce other attractors which coexist with the still attractive Cournot fixed point.

Regional Effects of Military Closures : The case of Sweden

- This paper concerns the effects of military closures on the local growth pattern in Sweden during the last decades. The main issue is to analyze to what extent the closures have affected the subsequent average income growth and net migration rates at the local level. The analysis is based on a data set covering Swedish municipalities with military bases during the period 1983-1998. Our main finding is that the closures have not had any significant impact on the subsequent income growth rate or the net migration rate in the affected minicipalities compared to other municipilaties. However, in accordance with previous studies based on Swedish data, we find the initial endowment of human capital to have a positive impact on the subsequent growth rate.

- Social capital has become an attractive theoretical perspective for a range of phenomena. However there is no consensus about definitions and measures of the concept. The aim of this paper is to make a Swedish review with relevance for public health of how the concept is used among some well cited researchers in political science, sociology, economy and public health. The review describes the background and use of the concept within these four disciplines. Different forms and perspectives on social capital are reviewed, and the important question about sources and consequences of social capital is discussed. Some of the critics against the concept are also presented. Social capital is often measured by connecting variables from already existing databases to the concept. However there are also examples of instruments that are prepared especially for measuring social capital and some of these are showed in this review. Examples of both quantitative and qualitative studies are presented. The review calls attention to the wide application of social capital within public health. The concept is useful in understanding the connections between social factors and health outcome on three different levels, - state, community and individual level. Some researchers state that the concept is too broad to be able to add some new knowledge; while this review argues that a wide application also could be a benefit. The question about health determinants is complex and could not be understood only on one level. Social capital can add important new knowledge about health determinants on all three levels. However, there is a need for further theoretical development to make the research about social capital and health valid. The basis for community social capital has to be clarified. In addition, there is a need for more knowledge about the collective and the individual aspects of social capital. Analysis of social capital on different levels also demands awareness of the fact that social capital could have positive consequences on one level and concurrently, negative consequences on another level.

A spatial interaction model of benefit spillovers from locally provided public services

- In this paper, we test the hypotheses that recreational and cultural services provided at the local level of government are associated with bene…t spillovers between Swedish municipalities. We also test the hypothesis that municipalities with similar expenditure levels are more clustered than would be expected from merely a coincidence. A representative voter model is derived and the demand for recreational and cultural services is estimated using spatial SUR techniques. The results suggest that these expenditures are associated with bene…t spillovers and that municipalities with similar expenditure levels are clustered to a greater extent than would be expected from just a coincidence.

Join the Club : On the Attractiveness of Golf Club Membership

- The aim of this paper is to analyze determinants of the attractiveness of membership in Swedish golfclubs. This is modeled as a utility maximization problem and is estimated using a unique data set that includes 99 percent of all golf clubs in Sweden. We find that the annual membership fees and the member profile have a significant impact on the club´s attractiveness as well as a number of other important characteristics of the club and the municipality in which the club is located. The latter result indicates that not only the characteristics of the club itself but also its location matter for its attractiveness.
