  • Inhibition of Thrombin Abrogates the Instant Blood-Mediated Inflammatory Reaction Triggered by Isolated Human Islets : Possible application of the thrombin inhibitor melagatran in clinical islet transplantation
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Diabetes. - : American Diabetes Association. - 0012-1797 .- 1939-327X. ; 51:6, s. 1779-1784
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A thrombotic/inflammatory reaction is elicited when isolated islets of Langerhans come in contact with ABO-compatible blood. The detrimental effects of this instant blood-mediated inflammatory reaction (IBMIR) provide a reasonable explanation for the observation that an unexpectedly high number of islets, from several donors, are needed to produce normoglycemia in transplant patients with type 1 diabetes. In this study, the hypothesis that a specific thrombin inhibitor, Melagatran, could reduce IBMIR in an in vitro model in which human islets are exposed to ABO-compatible blood was tested. The administration of Melagatran abrogated IBMIR dose-dependently. Islets exposed to blood, in the absence or presence of 0.4 μmol/l Melagatran, exhibited a loss of integrity and were found to be trapped in macroscopic clots containing platelets and CD11b+ leukocytes. At concentrations from 1 to 10 μmol/l, Melagatran inhibited both coagulation and complement activation. Also, platelet and leukocyte activation and consumption were decreased. Islet morphology was maintained with almost no platelets adhering to the surface, and infiltration by CD11b+ leukocytes was considerably reduced. In conclusion, Melagatran significantly reduced IBMIR in this model system. This protective effect indicates that thrombin plays a pivotal role in IBMIR and suggests that thrombin inhibition can improve the outcome of clinical islet transplantation.

  • Strategies to mitigate the effects of future extreme heat waves - A new method for mapping
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IOP Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing Ltd. ; , s. 1.06-1.10
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Global warming is increasingly causing extreme weather events, such as heat waves. One-way heat waves are problematic in society, particularly in urban areas, is because of their negative impact on vulnerable groups including elderly people and children. Organizations such as municipalities that are responsible for local schools, day care centres and/or elderly homes, may struggle to provide the necessary care and function during extreme heat waves. This work explores how remote sensing images providing historical data of land surface temperatures (LST) can be used to create summer urban heat island maps and heat wave intensity, and in the longer run, how such information could be used by municipalities and other actors to mitigate effects of future heat waves. The method presented in this study was used to detect the “hot spots” in two participating Swedish municipalities and identify the municipal services located within these spots based on MODIS (1 km) and Landsat (30 m) LST datasets. Furthermore, this study showed that urban heat island phenomenon existed in the two participating municipalities. In general, this methodology can be applicable at both local and regional scale, although it might require additional site-specific data. © Content from this work may be used under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 licence. • Selfish Dynamic Spectrum Access in Multichannel Wireless Networks : Complete and incomplete information analysis
  • 2011
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The increasing popularity and widespread deployment of wireless data systems fuel the increasing demand for more spectrum. On the other hand, various studies measuring spectrum utilization show that there is a huge variation in spectrum utilization at different times and locations. In view of this, various dynamic spectrum access (DSA) methods have been proposed in order to achieve more efficient utilization of spectrum resources by virtue of exploiting the variations in spectrum demand over time and space. Implementing DSA systems in a centralized way can lead to complexity and scalability problems due to the extensive control signaling involved. Therefore distributed implementations of DSA systems in which the users can access the system resources at their own discretion have been proposed. These distributed mechanisms typically incorporate cognitive radio systems which act as agents on behalf of users to measure the radio environment and make decisions based on these measurements. On the other hand, the freedom of the users in distributed systems to form their actions can lead each user to try to maximize its benefit from the system without regard the overall performance of the DSA system. Therefore, selfish behavior can prevail in distributed systems, which is likely to degrade the system performance. In this thesis we investigate the implications of selfish decision making in dynamic spectrum access systems. To address this broad problem, we focus our analysis on a particular system which can represent the essential properties of DSA systems and thus can shed light on the performance of the broad class of DSA systems with selfish users. Specifically, we model a DSA system as a multichannel random access system which uses ALOHA for medium access, and we analyze the behavior of the selfish users by modeling the system as a non-cooperative game. In this analysis we incorporate the effect of channel state information on the decision making of the users; we consider both cases when the users act on global (complete) and on local (incomplete) information. We determine the behavior of the selfish users at the Nash equilibria of the non-cooperative game and measure the performance of the system in terms of sum and individual utilities for various user loads and amount of available resources. We try to identify how the performance of the DSA system with selfish users compares with its cooperative counterpart. By performing these analyses we provide insights into the broader question of whether selfish users can utilize spectrum resources in a DSA system as well as cooperative users.

    • This paper gives an overview of the approach of working methods at the Aedas R&DComputational Design and Research [CDR] Group. It first contextualizes research inarchitectural practice and tries to propose an explanation for the difficulties inimplementing it; then explains the evolution of the groups’ computing approach frombespoke to heuristic sets of lightweight applications. It concludes with examples of thedeveloped computational design approach.

  • Measurement of the tt¯ production cross-section in the lepton+jets channel at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS experiment
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 810
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The top anti-top quark production cross-section is measured in the lepton+jets channel using proton–proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. Events with exactly one charged lepton and four or more jets in the final state, with at least one jet containing b-hadrons, are used to determine the tt¯ production cross-section through a profile-likelihood fit. The inclusive cross-section is measured to be σinc=830±0.4(stat.)±36(syst.)±14(lumi.)pb with a relative uncertainty of 4.6%. The result is consistent with theoretical calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. The fiducial tt¯ cross-section within the experimental acceptance is also measured. © 2020 The Author(s)
