- This chapter focuses on technology-related ownership changes between large and small high-technology firms. These include the spin-off of new Small and Medium Sized Enterprise (SME) from large firms, intermediate links between large and small firms, and large firm acquisition of technology-intensive SMEs. The chapter analyses patterns of large firm-small firm linkages, collaboration and ownership changes in the 10 European regions studied by the network. It argues that the entrepreneurial spin-offs concept is subdivided with respect to the latest employer: 'main incubator' or 'spin-off parent'. The chapter describes the interaction between large and small technology-intensive European firms. Empirical evidence from research by members of the Targeted Socio-Economic Research European network will be used to consider the questions. The questions are related to concepts like high-technology regions and industries; local technology-intensive SMEs; and a link between regional high-technology clusters and networks.

- The discourse on 'environmental awareness' in society seems to have indicated that consumers de facto behave according to their expressed values, which would imply that they consume better environmentally adapted products when these are offered in the market. Business magazines have special issues on the environment, the 'environmental manager' is an established profession and corporate environmental management is on the curriculum of an increasing number of universities. The petroleum and energy business have an important role in making the world a more sustainable place to live in. In 1996 a process started in which the management and owners of the company began to reevaluate the assumptions and foundations of their businesses. The process of repositioning British Petroleum as an energy provider thus started with the new theory of business, influenced the business model and has started to change the structure of the business system, its components, its resource base and not the least, its performance criteria.

The aim of the Symposium was to strengthen the theoretical foundations, to advance knowledge and to promote research into facilities management.

- Executive Summary The European Councils held in Lisbon (2000) and in Göteborg (2001) gave the Union a new direction by establishing a long term strategy with sustainable development as the overarching objective. Sustainable development means, in this context, goals for economic, social and environmental policy, which are both mutually consistent and capable of delivering enhanced economic growth. To assure progress towards an agreed range of targets, the open method of coordination (OMC) has been adopted as the process for the implementation of the strategy. The strategy for sustainable development is a long-term one and, although the deadline originally set for the Lisbon agenda was 2010, it is clear that sustainable development has a much longer time-horizon and also that there is a global dimension to sustainable development, not just an EU one. In the run up to the mid-term review of the Lisbon strategy, this report by the European Panel for Sustainable Development, EPSD, offers an assessment of the EU approach to sustainable development. The report is based on official documents, research reports and background reports prepared by researchers from different disciplines. It concentrates on the EU-15 Member States, because the ten new members that acceded to the EU in May 2004 have not (yet!) been subject to the same commitments in relation to sustainable development. However, in future work by the EPSD, it is anticipated that the coverage will be extended to embrace all 25 Member States. The report starts with a discussion on the political process, followed by an examination of the economic, social and environmental dimensions of the strategy, of the potential of new technologies, and of the results delivered by the Member States. The final chapters include discussions on impact assessment and the global dimension of sustainable development. The focus of the report is on: − The integration of the three dimensions of sustai nable development and the policies that affect them into one coherent strategy − The implementation of the strategy through the open method of co-ordination The main messages of the report are that it is vital to: • Maintain the original commitment to sustainable development as the overarching objective of the Lisbon strategy and improve the co-ordination between the three pillars of the strategy: the economic, social and environmental dimensions [...]

- This article argues that virtual process development can give production technology as engineering art the renaissance it needs. With a starting point from an industrially established project, aimed at increasing the tempo and precision in the development of new manufacturing systems, above all through using the new possibilities that simulation through information technology gives, real financial data about the merits of simulation techniques are delivered. Furthermore, the article discusses the consequences of lacking knowledge and competence within the area of manufacturing and constitutes an appeal for investment in development of industrial activity. The significance of practical experience is underlined, and the article defends the thesis that effective knowledge and competence refinement, besides lead-time reduction, provides important key issues for an innovative and future based manufacturing industry.
