  • Budget effectiveness in multinational companies : An empirical examination of environmental interaction on cognitive and affective effects of two dimensions of budgetary participation
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - Oxford, UK : Elsevier. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 9:4, s. 299-316
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examines the interaction between two dimensions of budgetary participation and environmental dynamism on perceptions of budget effectiveness in multinational companies. Unique features are dichotomies of: (i) domestic and foreign subunits; (ii) two dimensions of budget participation, communication and influence; and (iii) two facets of effectiveness perceptions, higher level involvement and outcomes of budget process. Results show that benefits of budgetary participation are limited and not consistent. Significant differences between foreign and domestic subunits are apparent. The primary perceived benefits are associated with communication. Budget influence is associated with positive perceptions of top-level involvement in foreign subunits but negative perceptions of outcomes of budget process in both domestic and foreign subunits.

  • Episodic cluster headache. I : Personality and some neuropsychological characteristics in male patients.
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Headache. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0017-8748 .- 1526-4610. ; 32:3, s. 119-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The etiology and pathogenesis of cluster headache remain largely unknown. Some previous studies have focused on personality characteristics in cluster headache. However, no consistent personality profile has been found. The present study applied two personality inventories, the Karolinska Scales of Personality (KSP) and the Heart and Lifestyle Type A Measure (HALTAM), that have not previously been used in the context of cluster headache. A correlation has been suggested between left-handedness and early learning difficulties, and cluster headache. Thus, these variables were included and measured by inventory techniques. Forty-nine out of 51 consecutive male patients with episodic cluster headache participated in the present study. As compared to controls, the cluster headache patients were significantly more anxiety-prone (higher scores in the KSP Somatic anxiety and Muscular tension subscales), less successfully socialized (low scores in the KSP Socialization scale), and had a more hostile attitude towards others (higher scores in the HALTAM Hostility scale). No relationships between left-handedness or early learning difficulties, and cluster headache disease were found. The implications of the personality differences for the etiology of cluster headache disease are discussed.

  • Episodic cluster headache. II : High tobacco and alcohol consumption in males.
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Headache. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0017-8748 .- 1526-4610. ; 32:4, s. 184-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Forty-nine out of 51 consecutive male patients with episodic cluster headache were studied with regard to their smoking and drinking habits in general and in relation to cluster headache periods. Questionnaires were constructed for data regarding tobacco intake. Situation-related smoking behavior was registered according to Frith (1971). Screening for alcohol over-consumption was made using the Malmö modification of the brief Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (Mm-MAST). Eighty-three percent of the patients used tobacco on a regular basis at the time of the study, with an average consumption of 20 cigarettes per day. Only 3% had never used tobacco regularly. The smoking-related desire to smoke in different situations was consistent with what is found in a general population of smokers. Sixty-seven percent of the patients had scores on the Mm-MAST indicative of alcohol over-consumption (i.e. heavy social drinking or alcoholism). During active headache periods 79% decreased their alcohol intake, whereas no consistent change in tobacco consumption was reported for the group as a whole. These findings were further corroborated by the fact that alcohol, but not tobacco intake, was reported by the majority of patients to elicit headache attacks during periods. Thus, our study showed high alcohol and tobacco consumption to be prominent features in male patients with episodic cluster headache. Since neither alcohol nor tobacco appear to have properties of ameliorating headache periods or attacks, the addictive behavior in our patients more likely reflects certain personality characteristics.

  • A comparison of multiplex and simplex families with Alzheimer's disease/senile dementia of Alzheimer type within a well defined population.
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Journal of neural transmission. Parkinson's disease and dementia section. - 0936-3076. ; 7:1, s. 61-72
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A study was made on 150 clinically demented patients presenting at autopsy at Umeå University Hospital in Sweden. In 90 of the cases dementia was considered to be primary in nature and of these forty six per cent (41 cases), fulfilled both the clinical and histopathological criteria for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease/Senile dementia of Alzheimer type (AD/SDAT). The families of these 41 AD/SDAT cases were then studied, and a family history obtained through interviews with multiple family informants and from civil and medical records. Additional diseased family members suffering from progressive dementia (multiplex families) were observed in 12 probands out of 41 (29%). Multiplex families exhibited similar clinical and histopathological characteristics as simplex families containing a single affected individual. The secondary cases in the multiplex families exhibited similar demographic and clinical characteristics as the probands. 39% of the multiplex and 14% of the simplex cases had an early age of onset of the disease, that was under 65 years. The overall prevalence of progressive dementia disorders in the 41 families was 5.9%. The prevalence of a progressive dementia disorder was 11% in the multiplex families (14% for the early onset cases) and 3.5% in the simplex families (2% for the early onset cases). The prevalence of progressive dementia disorder for family members who had passed the mean age of the onset of the disease for their family, was 45% for multiplex and 18% for simplex families. Furthermore the incidence rate for dementia was significantly higher (p < 0.005) in multiplex families (5.5 per 1,000 person years) when compared to simplex families (2.5 per 1,000 person years). No differences could be seen in parental age at birth of the diseased when comparing the two sets of families. However in multiplex families the duration of the disease was significantly (p < 0.025) shorter, in subjects with parental age at birth over 35 years compared to those with a parental age under 35 years. The multiplex families contained significantly (p < 0.025) larger sibships; and showed a significantly lower age of onset for the disease (p < 0.001), and a significantly longer duration of disease (p < 0.05) compared to the simplex families. A significant intra familial correlation of age at disease onset was observed in both sets of the families.

  • Electrical transport properties of dense bulk YBa2Cu4O8 produced by hot isostatic pressing
  • 1990
  • Ingår i: Physica. C, Superconductivity. - 0921-4534 .- 1873-2143. ; 170:5-6, s. 521-531
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Highly dense sintered YBa2Cu4O8 has been produced by hot isostatic pressing (HIP). The electrical resistivity varrho of this material has been measured as a function of temperature T and pressure varrho in the range 40–650 K and 0–0.7 GPa. Both the temperature dependence and the pressure dependence of varrho are found to be well described by a model based on the standard Bloch-Grüneisen theory. It is pointed out that varrho is liner in T only under isobaric conditions, while varrho is strongly nonlinear in all high-Tc superconductors under isochoric (constant volume) conditions. The critical current density of the material is 900 A/cm2 at 4 K, while the resistivity is 630 μΩ cm at 294 K.

  • Thermal conductivity of polycrystalline YBa2Cu4O8
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 49:6, s. 4189-4198
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have measured the thermal conductivity κ and the thermal diffusivity a of a dense bulk ceramic polycrystalline sample of YBa2Cu4O8 (1:2:4) in the temperature range 30–300 K. We find κ≊10 W m-1 K-1 at 100 K, significantly higher than in ceramic YBa2Cu3O7-δ (1:2:3) and approaching the in-plane value for single-crystal 1:2:3, and decreasing to 7.6 W m-1 K-1 at 300 K. The data for this sample can be described by standard theories for phonon thermal conductivity of crystalline materials with boundary, phonon, and electron scattering. The higher κ in 1:2:4 as compared to 1:2:3 is, in this model, due to the smaller point defect scattering in the former. The fitted parameters for the three scattering mechanisms all agree with independent estimates based on simple models; inserting data for electric resistivity, grain size, carrier density, and lattice properties we can predict κ and its T dependence to within about 20%. We also discuss models for the phonon and electron thermal conductivities in some detail, including some second-order effects such as inelastic electron scattering and a T-dependent carrier density.

  • Molecular characterization of Borrelia burgdorferi isolated from Ixodes ricinus in northern Sweden.
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Infectious Diseases. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0036-5548 .- 1651-1980. ; 24:2, s. 181-188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ixodes ricinus ticks, harbouring Borrelia burgdorferi, were found in an area in northern Sweden, not thought to be endemic for Lyme borreliosis. This investigation took place at Norrbyskär, an island situated in the Bothnian Gulf, 63 degrees 33'N/19 degrees 52'E. One of 42 nymphal and 8/43 adult I. ricinus ticks collected carried spirochetes as seen by phase contrast microscopy. Pure bacterial cultures were obtained from 2 of the ticks. Western blot analysis using species-specific monoclonal antibodies showed that the isolated spirochetes were B. burgdorferi. The identity of the isolated spirochetes was confirmed by DNA amplification using B. burgdorferi OspA and flagellin gene specific oligonucleotides as well as partial DNA sequencing of the respective OspA and flagellin genes. The 2 isolated spirochaete populations were different as shown by their protein profiles in sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gels. Moreover, the demonstration of Lyme borreliosis in a patient from the island of Norrbyskär indicates the need for clinical consideration of this disease in northern Sweden.

  • Axis V--Global Assessment of Functioning Scale. Evaluation of a self-report version
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Acta Psychiatr Scand. - : Wiley. - 0001-690X .- 0001-690X .- 1600-0447. ; 90:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study examines a self-report version of the Global Assessment of Functioning Scale according to Axis V (GAF self-report). The sample (n = 73) was a psychiatric outpatient population from a catchment area clinic. Patients with psychotic and organic mental disorders were not included. The diagnostic distribution on Axis I was similar to the findings from previous studies. Axis II disorders were identified among 47%, of whom a majority also had a concomitant Axis I disorder. The mean GAF expert score was 66.5 (range: 48-86). High complexity and severity of disorders and a high number of fulfilled Axis II criteria were significantly associated with low GAF scores. Independent expert ratings on GAF were correlated with the GAF self-report overall at r = 0.62, varying from 0.45 to 0.91 between different diagnostic groups. In general, the patients scored themselves lower (mean: -4.4 units) than expert ratings. Patients with depressive symptoms from an adjustment disorder or mood disorder were most prone to underestimation. Women also tended to score themselves lower than experts did. Conclusively, the GAF self-report turned out to be a valid and reliable unidimensional instrument measuring psychological, social and occupational functioning. The GAF is easy to handle, and with a self-report version as a complement, Axis V could be more frequently used in future clinical practice and research.
