Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
- The paper describes how several procedures for higher-order predictions have been introduced in order to improve the convergence speed in a general finite element program for non-linear structural analysis. In addition to higher-order Taylor expansions earlier discussed, Lagrangian extrapolations and some methods commonly used for the integration of initial value problems have been introduced. The methods are used for improved predictions in the stepwise solution of equilibrium states and for accurate descriptions of the initial post-bifurcation behaviour. They are used in a general solution algorithm, based on a parameter formulation. The methods are discussed in the light of the strategies for re-creation of the tangential stiffness matrix, used for equilibrium iterations. Numerical examples, exhibiting different limit and bifurcation behaviours for trusses, frames and shells, are used to evaluate the numerical properties and efficiencies of the methods. The paper concludes that the overall efficiency in the algorithm can be improved by introduction of more accurate predictions than the standard Euler prediction. In terms of reliability combined with efficiency, an implicit generalized Simpson method is the preferred method.

Budget effectiveness in multinational companies : An empirical examination of environmental interaction on cognitive and affective effects of two dimensions of budgetary participation

In: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - Oxford, UK : Elsevier. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 9:4, s. 299-316

Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
- This study examines the interaction between two dimensions of budgetary participation and environmental dynamism on perceptions of budget effectiveness in multinational companies. Unique features are dichotomies of: (i) domestic and foreign subunits; (ii) two dimensions of budget participation, communication and influence; and (iii) two facets of effectiveness perceptions, higher level involvement and outcomes of budget process. Results show that benefits of budgetary participation are limited and not consistent. Significant differences between foreign and domestic subunits are apparent. The primary perceived benefits are associated with communication. Budget influence is associated with positive perceptions of top-level involvement in foreign subunits but negative perceptions of outcomes of budget process in both domestic and foreign subunits.

Discussion of `unknown-but-bounded' disturbances in system identification

Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
- In this contribution we point out that a fundamental property of a disturbance is that it is independent of the input - otherwise it is rather part of the system. Based on this characterization we show that parameter convergence can be obtained not only for stochastic but also for unknown-but-bounded disturbances if the input is at our disposal.

Identifiability Implies Robust Identifiability

Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
- In identification from a deterministic point of view an algorithm is said to be robustly convergent if the true system is regained when the noise level tends to zero. In this paper we introduce a concept close to this performance measure: robust global identifiability. A model structure, i.e. a smoothly parametrized set of models, is said to be robustly globally identifiable if there exist an identification algorithm such that the true parameters are regained when the noise level tends to zero. We show that global identifiability implies robust global identifiability when the model structure in consideration is a characteristic set of differential polynomials.

Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
- Partly human, partly organizationIn this article the phenomenon of organization is discussed and its consequences for the understanding of human actions and human choices are examined. Affiliation to organizations are found to be both restrictions on and preconditions for most human action. In this connection families are regarded as organizations as well as enterprises, voluntary associations and states. Human action is primarily action on behalf of organizations where individuals are partly human, partly organization. To understand the meaning of action on behalf of organization it is important to realize that people rarely choose their organizational affiliation. People are selected. This means that actions on behalf of organizations cannot be regarded as expressions of individual choices. Actions on behalf of organizations are generally characterized by a dual involvement.
