  • Dark soliton pairs in fiber couplers
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Optics Communications. - 0030-4018. ; 111:1-2, s. 116-122
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We analyze the possible stationary states formed by pairs of dark solitons propagating in dual-core optical fibers, i.e. in a nonlinear coupler. These are local disturbances on a constant background. We find new dark soliton states, characterize them and show that they differ from the soliton states consisting of coupled bright solitons in several ways. © 1994.

  • A Longitudinal Analysis of the Relationships of Physical Activity and Body Fat With Nerve Growth Factor and Brain-Derived Neural Factor in Children
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Activity & Health. - : Human Kinetics. - 1543-3080 .- 1543-5474. ; 15:8, s. 620-625
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neural factor (BDNF) are important for brain function and detectable in the blood. This study explored the longitudinal associations of physical activity and body fat with serum NGF and BDNF in children. Methods: Two waves of measurements were performed 2 years apart in 8- to 11-year-old children, including physical activity using the ActiGraph model 7164, body composition by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and serum NGF and BDNF determined by multiplex immunoassay. The first wave included 248 children. Full information maximum likelihood estimation with robust standard errors was applied in structural equation modeling. Results: Vigorous physical activity showed a direct positive longitudinal relationship with NGF (standardized coefficient beta = 0.30, P = .01) but not with BDNF (beta = 0.04, P = .84). At the same time, body fat percentage was positively related to both NGF (beta = 0.59, P < .001) and BDNF (beta = 0.17, P = .04). There was an indication of an indirect relationship of vigorous physical activity with NGF (product of unstandardized coefficient beta = -0.18, P = .02) and BDNF (beta = -0.07, P = .05) through the negative relationship with body fat percentage (beta = -0.36, P < .001). Conclusions: Vigorous physical activity is directly related to serum NGF and indirectly through the level of body fat. The relationships with serum BDNF are more complex.

  • A multiwideband planar monopole antenna for 4G devices
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Microwave and Optical Technology Letters. - : Wiley. - 1098-2760 .- 0895-2477. ; 55:3, s. 589-593
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents a compact multiband planar antenna designed for mobile phone applications. The antenna performance is achieved by designing a planar monopole antenna into distributed radiating elements. The proposed antenna is comprised of a chopped circular radiator appended with a meander line and an L-strip coupled element, which is an extension of the ground plane. The combination of a chopped circular patch and L-shaped coupling strip residing on the top side generates lower band while upper band resonances are attained separately by chopped circular resonator and meander line elements. The antenna shows a planar structure which occupies an area of 56 x 17.6 mm and can be directly printed onto a circuit board at low cost making it especially suitable for mobile phone applications. The manufactured antenna is experimentally verified and covers several wireless communication bands, such as LTE 750, GSM 850, GSM 900, DCS, UMTS-2110, Bluetooth, WLAN, WiMAX, and UWB. The high frequency structure simulation is used to design and analyze the antenna performance, and a practical structure was fabricated and tested. The measured and simulated return loss show good agreement.

  • Low calcaneal bone mineral density and the risk of distal forearm fracture in women and men: a population-based case-control study.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Bone. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-2763 .- 8756-3282. ; 45:4, s. 789-93
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: We used dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to measure calcaneal bone mineral density (BMD) and estimate the prevalence of osteoporosis in a population with distal forearm fracture and a normative cohort. METHODS: Patients 20 to 80 years of age with distal forearm fracture treated at one emergency hospital during two consecutive years were invited to calcaneal BMD measurement; 270 women (81%) and 64 men (73%) participated. A DXA heel scanner estimated BMD (g/cm(2)) and T-scores. Osteoporosis was defined as T-score< or =-2.5 SD. Of the fracture cohort, 254 women aged 40-80 years and 27 men aged 60-80 years were compared with population-based control cohorts comprising 171 women in the age groups 50, 60, 70 and 80 years and 75 men in the age groups 60, 70, and 80 years. RESULTS: In the fracture population no woman below 40 years or man below 60 years of age had osteoporosis. In women aged 40-80 years the prevalence of osteoporosis in the distal forearm fracture cohort was 34% and in the population-based controls was 25%; the age-adjusted prevalence ratio (PR) was 1.32 (95% CI 1.00-1.76). In the subgroup of women aged 60-80 years the age-adjusted prevalence ratio of osteoporosis was 1.28 (95% CI 0.95-1.71). In men aged 60-80 years the prevalence of osteoporosis in the fracture cohort was 44% and in the population-based controls was 8% (PR 6.31, 95% CI 2.78-14.4). The age-adjusted odds ratio for fracture associated with a 1-SD reduction in calcaneal BMD was in women aged 40-80 years 1.4 (95% CI 1.1-1.8), in the subgroup of women aged 60-80 years 1.2 (95% CI 0.95-1.6), and in men aged 60-80 years 2.6 (95% CI 1.7-4.1). Among those aged 60-80 years the area under the ROC curve was in women 0.56 (95% CI 0.49-0.63) and in men 0.80 (95% CI 0.70-0.80). CONCLUSIONS: The age-adjusted prevalence of osteoporosis based on calcaneal BMD is higher in individuals with distal forearm fracture than in population-based controls. BMD impairment is associated with increased odds ratio for forearm fracture in both women and men but the differences between cases and controls are more pronounced in men than in women, which may have implications in fracture prevention.

  • An investigation of peak-broadening effects arising when combining CE with MS.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Electrophoresis. - : Wiley. - 0173-0835 .- 1522-2683. ; 28:18, s. 3207-3213
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, peak-broadening effects caused by nebulizing gas flow and lack of temperature control have been investigated for separation capillaries with three different inner diameters. The study was performed with serial UV/ESI-MS detection in an effort to distinguish between peak broadening arising in the separation and peak broadening arising in the ion source. The nebulizing gas was found to significantly affect both migration time and separation efficiency when using capillaries with 50 and 75 µm id. If the nebulizing gas is on during injection, the injection volume increases to such an extent that significant peak broadening is induced. Reducing the id to 25 µm minimizes the parabolic flow induced by the nebulizing gas. Results indicate that the nebulizing gas pressure can be optimized to minimize peak broadening in the ion source. A decrease in detection sensitivity, possibly related to the orthogonal design of the interface, was observed when the nebulizing gas pressure was increased. A tapered capillary tip was found to provide superior separation efficiency as well as sensitivity.

  • A regional method for increased resource-efficiency in industrial energy systems
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: eceee Industrial Summer Study Proceedings. - 9789198048254 - 9789198048247
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The impact of global climate change as a result of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), primarily from the use of fossil fuels, is demanding actions from all sectors of society. The industry sector is one of the world’s largest energy using sectors and GHG emitters. Improved energy efficiency in industry is one of the foremost means of improving energy efficiency and reducing GHG emissions. Research shows that despite large untapped potentials for improved energy efficiency in industry, cost-efficient energy efficiency measures are not always implemented, explained by the existence of barriers to energy efficiency, e.g. information imperfections and asymmetries. Moreover, research shows that a major energy efficiency potential lies in the energy system and the way it is governed. For regional governments, the industrial energy use is difficult to affect as they only have indirect power to influence the decisions in those organizations. This underlies the importance of developing methods on how a region can support and effectively contribute to energy efficiency improvements in the local industry. So far, methods are limited related to regional governance of industrial energy systems. The aim of this paper is to present a structured methodology for improved regional resource efficiency in the local industry from a regional perspective, inspired by the Triple Helix Model. Results display the county administrative board of administration’s current method how to target industry, and ends with a proposal for how the methods could be improved.
