    • A key concern in international educational policy during the 21st century has been the impact of teacher professionalism on outcomes of schooling. Sweden makes for an interesting case because of the country’s initiatives to improve the quality of education through an academization of the teachers. The aim of this study is to analyse how Swedish state policy of ‘education on a scientific foundation’ is constructed in a selection of texts and videos presented by the Swedish National Agency of Education, and how these policy texts construct discourses of teacher professionalism. The result shows how the formulation in the Education Act, prescribing that the education shall rest on a scientific foundation, is interpreted into ‘policy-as-text’ and a policy apparatus consisting of four central concepts. Here, the terms ‘research-based way of working’ and ‘evidence’ are added to the terms ‘scientific foundation’ and ‘proven experience’ from the Education Act. Furthermore, the result shows three policy discourses of teacher professionalism that are constructed in the analysed texts: the selectively critical and accountable teacher; the positive, flexible, responsible and effective teacher; and the semi-autonomous teacher.

    • Surveying archaeological sites is a fundamental tool to locate, identify and analyze the status of a site. The surface survey in particular, is most significant method for the visual examination of the landscape, settlement locations, distribution of artifacts on the surface and changes of settlement pattern at regional level By examining the surface material and geophysical features, archaeologists can improve their knowledge for a better understanding about the past. The present paper is specifically focused on a systematic surface survey of the “Ganweriwala” site which is regarded as the fifth large urban center of the Indus Valley culture This type of survey leads to the visual inspection of cultural material on the surface and documentation of a site through topographical study. The results of the geophysical survey and discoveries are present and compare from previous studies in this paper.

    • In the subject of cosmology, spatially homogeneous solutions are often used to model the universe. It is therefore of interest to ask what happens when perturbing into the spatially inhomogeneous regime. To this end, we, in the present paper, study the future asymptotics of solutions to Einstein's vacuum equations in the case of T-2-symmetry. It turns out that in this setting, whether the solution is spatially homogeneous or not can be characterized in terms of the asymptotics of one variable appearing in the equations; there is a monotonic function such that if its limit is finite, then the solution is spatially homogeneous and if the limit is infinite, then the solution is spatially inhomogeneous. In particular, regardless of how small the initial perturbation away from spatial homogeneity is, the resulting asymptotics are very different. Using spatially homogeneous solutions as models is therefore, in this class, hard to justify.

    • The two latest IPCC assessment reports have concluded that knowledge is not sufficient for inducing action on climate change. This study problematizes the issue of going beyond business-as-usual through a study of the forestry sector in Sweden, which is a large economic sector and could be expected to be an early adapter, given that newly planted forest may stand some 70-90 years into the future. Therefore resources, economic motivation in the longer term and environmental foundations for early adaptation action could be expected to exist. This study draws upon the Foucauldian conceptualization of governmentality to explain the particular institutional logics that nevertheless lead to business-as-usual arguments dominating discussion on adaptation in the case of Swedish forestry. The study emphasizes that adaptation must be seen as steered and limited by existing institutional, social system logics, rather than by externally defined "rational" motivations. Efforts on adaptation to climate change must thus be considered in relation to, and seek to change, existing institutionally based motivational and incentive structures, and must thus be conceived through social rather than environmental logics. In fact, social logics may even define the types of actions that may be regarded as adaptations.

    • While several benefits of using models in software engineering have been observed in practice, the adoption of modeling remains low. Multiple challenges of using models, especially related to tools, have been reported both for industrial use and for education. However, there is a lack of systematic, empirical investigations of the challenges in modeling education and their relation to industrial challenges. Therefore, we conducted a multiple-case study with two cases, in the U.S and Sweden, focusing on students' perceptions towards tooling and UML in education. Our data collected from 369 student evaluation surveys, enriched with qualitative data, shows that the students' perception of modeling tools depends not only on the complexity of tools, but rather on multiple contextual factors, including tool characteristics, scope of course and project contents, nature of the required models, and the tools' role in generating executable artifacts. We conclude that there is a need for tailoring modeling tools for education beyond focusing on simplification and usability. Furthermore, due to the broad diversity within the modeling domain, there is a need for adapting the use of tools to the specific curriculum and course learning objectives.

    • This article is based on a case study of the school life of Fatou, a newly arrived adolescent student with limited experiences of formal schooling. Drawing on Goffman’s theories on impression and stigma management, the article explores the techniques employed by Fatou in order to pass as a “normal” student in the mainstream classroom. The results point to the significance of institutional frameworks in these efforts, and show how Fatou and her teachers collectively employ different impression management techniques in order to downplay the mis-match between Fatou’s prior knowledge and the academic demands of the classroom. As a result, it is argued that for Fatou, school becomes a place where, rather than learning subject content, she is “learning to pass”.
