  • The Influence of Learning on Naturalization of New Practices -The Case of Robust Design in Product Development
  • 2010
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Influence of Learning on Naturalization of New Practices– the Case of Robust Design in Product DevelopmentAzadeh Fazl MashhadiDepartment of Technology Management and EconomicsDivision of Quality SciencesChalmers University of TechnologyABSTRACTCustomers appreciate a robust product which performs its desired function consistently and independently of the sources of variation during its life cycle. In order to deliver a robust design to customers, the upstream activities during the product development process should proactively support such a result. Even though there have been methods and methodologies developed for robust design in product development, such as Taguchi Methods, Robust Design Methodology, Design For Six Sigma, and robust design practices, companies are still struggling with the application of robust design in practice. Volvo 3P is one such company that has begun to apply robust design in the product development processes since 2004. Volvo 3P has recognized that in order to utilize robust design to its full potential, there is a need for cultivation and local growing of the concept in the organization’s context. Through this approach robust design can also achieve its continuous application. This is referred to as naturalization of robust design in the present thesis. This thesis firstly elaborates on Volvo 3P learning from a previous unsuccessful initiative for introducing robust design through an external consultant. The obstacles in the organization and weaknesses in the initiative are discussed. Secondly, it describes the influence of learning on the individuals at Volvo 3P experiencing what lies in the robust design concept for them in practice and therefore changing their way of working. And finally it elaborates on how Volvo 3P has utilized a learning alliance with the Division of Quality Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology as a means to create a learning environment in which robust design is cultivated in the organizational context and grows into the practices in a natural way. In this thesis also the key attributes to achieve learning alliances are identified as a learning relationship, reflection-in-action, mutual learning, and sharing of knowledge and experiences on the organizational level. The thesis identifies four contributions to the research community based on practice which are also valuable for industry. These contributions can be summarized as a broader view of the robust design concept, development of a concrete view for robust design practices in an organizational context, the positive influence of learning for naturalization of robust design, and the learning alliance as a method to create such learning. Keywords: robust design, naturalization, learning, robust design practices, learning alliance, action research

  • Counteracting the Lack of Trust in Global Business: Creating Economic and Social Value with Stakeholders
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: G20 youth conference in St Petersburg.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Year after year we are reminded of how badly business organizations are seen in large parts of the world. For example, in survey done by the research firm Edelmann in 2012, less than 30% of the French informed public trusted business organizations and their leaders to do “what is right”. With the exception of some excellent examples, the low trust and legitimacy of business is a problem that prevails throughout the G20 members and most countries where the trust level is measured. With the general critique towards large corporations in society, and with the recurring corporate scandals and reports of executive greed, this is perhaps not surprising. But the implications of this problem are important not only in the societal debate, but for how these organizations function. Trust is connected with engagement, which in turn is connected to performance in what we can call the trust-engagement-performance cycle. Hence, in the general case, a low level of trust is connected with low performance both in terms of people’s engagement and the financial performance of corporations. In a study with 20 CEOs of large transnational corporations selected out of their ability to create both financial and social value (we call them “Higher Ambition”-companies), we try to understand their strategies for increasing trust with stakeholders in the markets that they are active in, engagement among their employees and external partners, and thereby performance. In doing so, the leaders of these corporations have to deal with a larger set of dilemmas and paradoxical choices that arise from the global complex nature of the transnational corporation as well as the double sided nature of their ambition to create economic as well as social value. Hence, instead of focusing on what global corporations do badly (which is the common way of analyzing the issue), we try to understand what they do well. The paper outlines the challenges, the resulting dilemmas/paradoxes, the strategies for handling them and discusses the implications for global business.

  • Lighting the Campfire: The creation of a community of interest around a media company
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: JMM International Journal on Media Management. - 1424-1277. ; 4:1, s. 4-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article describes a strategy for community building, labeled cognitive dominance. The strategy highlights the economic value of the concepts enactment and storytellingin a network of people. The article links community theory with network economicsand strategy in the community setting and argues that network effects can be reapedthrough the creation of the community. The cognitive dominance strategy in implementationis illustrated in a single case study from the Swedish media industry onhow a company extensively used such a strategy. The company aimed to create acommunity of interest around its product. To do this, the company needed to gainattention by growing in importance in the public debate, and use storytelling with adistinguished rhetoric to, more evidently jointly create a reality with its audience. The cognitive dominance strategy also allowed the media company to go throughchanges, as it built upon change itself.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Work, Employment and Society. - : SAGE Publications. - 0950-0170 .- 1469-8722. ; 26:1, s. 161-171
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is little or no tradition of action research outputs reaching the mainstream industrial relations and work sociology literatures. The aim of this research note is to address why this is so and argue for an action research agenda for work with unions that entails the researcher assuming the role of change agent to facilitate union capacity building or developing workplaces for better jobs. A key issue is how such an agenda can be advanced that does not compromise the integrity of the researcher or the quality of research output. This, we argue, is worth exploring as a means for putting union research onto a more interventionist footing. However, we also suggest that the successful pursuit of such an agenda depends on meeting a number of methodological challenges.

  • Sharing innovative and best-practice approaches for teaching Intellectual Property Management: A workshop report
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: World Patent Information. - : Elsevier BV. - 0172-2190. ; 49, s. 75-76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Intellectual property (IP) assets and intellectual property rights (IPRs) are central for many firms’ competitiveness, especially in technology-based businesses but also in other types of businesses. It is therefore of key importance to equip future technology and business leaders (i.e., the students of today) with knowledge about how to manage IP and IPRs, which has been acknowledged in an increasing number of courses and programs on IP management worldwide (including at Queen Mary University of London and at Chalmers University of Technology). However, IP management is a challenging subject to teach, especially due to its interdisciplinary character. IP management teaching often needs to combine knowledge from different areas on studies, including management, economics, law, and technology. The fact that it is a fairly new subject in its own right also makes it challenging since there is a lack of well-developed course materials and course designs.

  • The importance of patents for innovation appropriation and open financing – a new view
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: R&D Management Conference. From Science to Society: Innovation and Value Creation. 3-6 July, Cambridge University..
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The role of patents for capturing (appropriating) value from innovation investments has since long been of major interest to both practitioners and academics. Previous studies have implicitly assumed that firms appropriate value through in-house creation and marketing of innovative products and services. We question this assumption in light of the variety of business models and strategies now being available, including open innovation. We develop a basic typology of appropriation strategies, and investigate the role patents play for different strategies among 172 Swedish technology based firms. The results show that the importance of patents has a skew distribution with many firms rating patents as very important and with a fat tail of firms rating patents less important. This partly explains the limited importance of patents that previous studies have communicated. The results also show that the protection of sales and sales margins of innovative products and services is only one function of patents, and that patents are also important for the sales of technologies and stocks. Thus, patenting widens the range of appropriation strategies as well as financing strategies available to R&D management, which is especially important for cash strung technology based start-ups and SMEs, as well as for large firms with long R&D times.
