  • Better Balance by Being Biased : A 0.8776-Approximation for Max Bisection
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: ACM Transactions on Algorithms. - : ASSOC COMPUTING MACHINERY. - 1549-6325 .- 1549-6333. ; 13:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recently, Raghavendra and Tan (SODA 2012) gave a 0.85-approximation algorithm for the MAX BISECTION problem. We improve their algorithm to a 0.8776-approximation. As MAX BISECTION is hard to approximate within alpha(GW) + epsilon approximate to 0.8786 under the Unique Games Conjecture (UGC), our algorithm is nearly optimal. We conjecture that MAX BISECTION is approximable within alpha(GW) - epsilon, that is, that the bisection constraint (essentially) does not make MAX CUT harder. We also obtain an optimal algorithm (assuming the UGC) for the analogous variant of MAX 2-SAT. Our approximation ratio for this problem exactly matches the optimal approximation ratio for MAX 2-SAT, that is, alpha(LLZ) + epsilon approximate to 0.9401, showing that the bisection constraint does not make MAX 2-SAT harder. This improves on a 0.93-approximation for this problem from Raghavendra and Tan.

  • Lookup Table Optimization for Sensor Linearization in Small Embedded Systems
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sensor Technology. - : Scientific Research Publishing, Inc.. - 2161-122X .- 2161-1238. ; 2:4, s. 177-184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper treats the problem of designing an optimal size for a lookup table used for sensor linearization. In small em- bedded systems the lookup table must be reduced to a minimum in order to reduce the memory footprint and intermedi- ate table values are estimated by linear interpolation. Since interpolation introduces an estimation uncertainty that in- creases with the sparseness of the lookup table there is a trade-off between lookup table size and estimation precision. This work will present a theory for finding the minimum allowed size of a lookup table that does not affect the overall precision, i.e. the overall precision is determined by the lookup table entries’ precision, not by the interpolation error.

  • Low-Cost versus Innovation : Contrasting Outsourcing and Integration Strategies in Manufacturing
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Creativity and Innovation Management. - : Wiley. - 0963-1690 .- 1467-8691. ; 18:1, s. 35-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analyses how two different outsourcing manufacturing strategies relate to plant performance and innovation capability when taking into account the organizational integration of design and manufacturing as well as product complexity. The study discriminates between low-cost-oriented outsourcing and innovation-oriented outsourcing. The empirical data used is based on a survey of 267 engineering firms, of which half have outsourced manufacturing. We found that the two outsourcing strategies do have different effects, which illustrates that outsourcing represents a trade-off between improving innovation capability and lowering costs. The study furthermore shows that manufacturing and supplier integration in product design processes is mainly beneficial when applying innovation-oriented outsourcing, and in particular when products and manufacturing processes are complex.

  • Spatial Bodies : Vulnerable Inclusiveness within Gyms and Fitness Venues in Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Social Sciences. - : MDPI AG. - 2076-0760. ; 11:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today, gyms and fitness venues set out, on a superficial level at least, to cater to the individual, no matter what their gender and are therefore often seen as inclusive spaces for physical activity and its concomitant health benefits. However, previous research has shown that gyms as such, as well as certain areas within gyms, are perceived as specifically masculine spaces, often referring to a contextually contingent hegemonic masculinity, thereby deterring those who do not align with this image, especially women, but also certain men. Even when these dividing lines are crossed, a gendered movement schema remains, because there are different social expectations of what, how, and where men and women should exercise. As we will see in this paper, these movement schemas are produced and reproduced through discursive spatial linkages within the gym and fitness culture. In addition to investigating in what ways gendered norms are implicated within the very architecture of gyms in general, one gym, in particular, is used as an example since it is written into its statutes that it should work in a norm-critical way, providing a case study that shows an attempt to disrupt this inhibiting gendered spatial discourse and, thereby, possibly creating a more inclusive gym space.

  • Hard Body 2.0 - The Construction of the Fitness Subject : An analysis of Swedish Fitness Blogs
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Idrottsforum.org/Nordic sport science forum. - 1652-7224. ; , s. 1-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Blogging is an endeavor that is often taken for granted in our everyday lives. In this article Greta Bladh critically examines the constructiveness of the concepts of health and fitness in the blogosphere. Through conducting a discourse analysis of Swedish fitness blogs, aided by the theoretical framework of Michel Foucault in terms of technologies of the self, and the concept of habitus as developed by Pierre Bourdieu, as well as a critical perspective concerning the morals of health discourse, Bladh investigates how human beings engage and negotiate discourse and social structure using writing practices mediated through cyberspace. The results indicates that the fitness field is a field of possibilities and that the blogs display various technologies of the self, sometimes in a contradictory way. This shows that it is by agency that discourse and social structure come into play, and thus it is through agency that different practices of appropriating fitness and health are displayed, signifying that the fitness subject is heterogeneously constructed.Even though the fitness subject is located within a field of possibilities Bladh also emphasize the gendered aspect of fitness and health by problematizing the strained relationships between femininity and muscle development and exercise and womanhood. This demonstrates that the construction of the fitness subject is constrained within gendered social structures.
