Umeå Psychological Reports No. 74, 1973. - The subjects detection of cue intercor-relation, rij, and cue validities, rei, was tested after completion of a learning task with three levels of rij (.00, .40 and .80). The detection was tested by means of reproduction of rij in one test condition and rei in another. The reproduced rij values in the two redundant conditions closely matched the values of the learning tasks. There were, however, no differences among reproduced rij values which was explained as a positive set in the rij = .00 condition. The reproduced rij values were generally close to the rei values of the task with the exception of the non-valid cue for the rij = .00 condition, which was greatly overestimated. The conclusion was that the poor performance in suppressor variable tasks is due to the subjects inability to adjust the weights given to the cues, rather than to poor learning of rij and rei.

- Preference as a motivational concept was considered as an organismic disposition and a model which contained a region with three distinct points of preference was tested according to correspondence with.sensory data. The preference region was limited by an upper and a lower limit and in between there was a maximum point of preference. The experimental subjects were instructed to produce the three categories when stimuli consisted of simple sinusoidals.The experimental studies started with an exploratory experiment where the preference level was registered by a threshold technique and was followed by an experiment where the metric properties of the region were tested. The three categories were found to form an equidistant scale. The two following experiments could mostly be characterized as invariance studies över minor procedural changes. In the four experiments which followed,-changes in preference region were predicted from sensory laws e. g. temporal integration, equal loudnesscontours and adaptation. The predictions were all supported with minor exceptions.Finally, the independence assumption between the two ears was tested and the assumption was verified. The experimen-talresults showed that the preference region can bs considered as a limited part on the loudness continuum and that this region follows sensory or psychophysical principles of judgment.

Some common word attributes and their relations to objective frequency counts

- A sample of 50 words taken from an American frequency count was used in obtaining subjective estimates of the following attributes: subjective frequency (SF), familiarity (F), associability (A), pronounciability (P), and comprehensibility (C). The last mentioned attribute had hitherto not been reported as scaleable with words presented in singelitem form. The results showed among other things that all attributes, except A, were reliable and highly intercorrelatejd and an ANOVA also separated A from the other. Correlations with objective frequency counts, one American and two Swedish, were highest for SF, F, and P. Comprehensibility was judged to be a scaleable attribute according to the method used (magnitude estimation). This attribute seems, however, to measure something slightly different from what the other attributes do. Some hypotheseses for this are finally formulated.
