  • SegBo : A Database of Borrowed Sounds in the World’s Languages
  • 2020
  • In: Proceedings of the 12th Language Resources and Evaluation Conference. ; , s. 5316-5322
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Phonological segment borrowing is a process through which languages acquire new contrastive speech sounds as the result of borrowing new words from other languages. Despite the fact that phonological segment borrowing is documented in many of the world’s languages, to date there has been no large-scale quantitative study of the phenomenon. In this paper, we present SegBo, a novel cross-linguistic database of borrowed phonological segments. We describe our data aggregation pipeline and the resulting language sample. We also present two short case studies based on the database. The first deals with the impact of large colonial languages on the sound systems of the world’s languages; the second deals with universals of borrowing in the domain of rhotic consonants.

  • Simultaneous determination of flavonols and phenolic acids by HPLC-CoulArray in berries common in the Nordic diet
  • 2016
  • In: Food Science and Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0023-6438 .- 1096-1127. ; 74, s. 128-134
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this study we evaluated and applied an HPLC coulometric array (HPLC-CoulArray) method for simultaneous determination of flavonols and phenolic acids in bilberry, lingonberry, cloudberry and sea buckthorn berry. Berry samples purchased from local supermarkets were freeze-dried, hydrolysed and extracted with 50% aqueous methanol containing TBHQ antioxidant and 1.2 M HCL, and analysed with HPLC-CoulArray. We found that phenolic profiles differed between berries. Quercetin was found in almost all berries, with the highest concentrations observed in lingonberry. Myricetin and isorhamnetin were only detected in bilberry and sea-buckthorn, respectively. Hydroxycinnamic acids (caffeic, ferulic, p-coumaric) were also detected in all berries, but hydroxybenzoic acids (gallic, vanillic) were not found in sea-buckthorn. Total concentration of phenolic compounds was highest in sea-buckthorn berry (270.5 mg/100 g DW), followed by bilberry (253.6 mg/100 g DW), lingonberry (219.7 mg/100 g DW) and cloudberry (121.7 mg/100 g DW). • Social aspects of the ecology of information work
  • 2011
  • In: Information ecology and libraries. - Bratislava : Comenius University of Bratislava. ; , s. 27-36
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The model of the ecology of information work (Huvila, 2006, 2009) describes the relation of knowledge organisation systems, or in broader sense, the relation of information infrastructures and human information work. The present paper discusses the social aspects of information work and their impact on the interplay of information infrastructures and hu- man activity. The theoretical underpinnings of the discussion build on the ecological approach of Gibson, infrastructural theory and social informa- tion theory. The concluding remarks summarise a reading of the earlier model that places a specific emphasis on foregrounding the social pro- cesses relating to the emergence of information infrastructures and their related information work patterns.

  • From Design Requirements to Effective Privacy Notifications : Empowering mHealth Users to Make Informed Decisions
  • 2021
  • In: International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1044-7318 .- 1532-7590. ; 37:19, s. 1823-1848
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • To date, there are no satisfactory design requirements for privacy notifications, which constitute a conceptual means of informing users of online data services about how their personal data are processed and guide the decisions they make. Contextualising privacy notifications in the field of personal health tracking, we elicit a set of design requirements from the literature, implement a prototype, and conduct a qualitative, iterative lab study to evaluate the efficacy of the requirements immanent in the prototype. Our findings show that privacy notifications have the potential to facilitate usable transparency and intervenability in the ecosystem of mobile devices. The feedback obtained about the prototype lends itself to a refined set of design requirements presented in this paper. Implementing the principles of human-centred design, these requirements reflect building blocks that can help designers create usable tools that accommodate the needs of users of mobile health services.

  • Quinone based conducting redox polymers for electrical energy storage
  • 2017
  • In: Elektrokhimiya. - : MAIK NAUKA/INTERPERIODICA. - 0424-8570. ; 53:1, s. 11-20
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Conducting redox polymers (CRPs) constitute a promising class of materials for the development of organic matter based batteries with the potential to overcome the main limitations connected to this type of rechargeable battery systems including low conductivity and dissolution problems. In this report we show that the potential of quinones can be effectively tuned into the conducting region of polypyrrole (PPy), both in water based solutions and in acetonitrile, which is a prerequisite for profitable combination of the two units. We also present a device where both anode and cathode are made from PPy substituted with different quinone pendant groups and where good rate performance is achieved without any conductivity additives thus providing support for the hypothesized synergetic effect of a conducting polymer backbone and a covalently attached redox active pendant group. This device constitutes, to the best of our knowledge, the first all-CRP based battery reported to date.

  • Structural basis of Cfr-mediated antimicrobial resistance and mechanisms to evade it
  • 2024
  • In: Nature Chemical Biology. - : Springer Nature. - 1552-4450 .- 1552-4469. ; 20:7, s. 867-876
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The bacterial ribosome is an essential drug target as many clinically important antibiotics bind and inhibit its functional centers. The catalytic peptidyl transferase center (PTC) is targeted by the broadest array of inhibitors belonging to several chemical classes. One of the most abundant and clinically prevalent resistance mechanisms to PTC-acting drugs in Gram-positive bacteria is C8-methylation of the universally conserved A2503 nucleobase by Cfr methylase in 23S ribosomal RNA. Despite its clinical importance, a sufficient understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying Cfr-mediated resistance is currently lacking. Here, we report a set of high-resolution structures of the Cfr-modified 70S ribosome containing aminoacyl- and peptidyl-transfer RNAs. These structures reveal an allosteric rearrangement of nucleotide A2062 upon Cfr-mediated methylation of A2503 that likely contributes to the reduced potency of some PTC inhibitors. Additionally, we provide the structural bases behind two distinct mechanisms of engaging the Cfr-methylated ribosome by the antibiotics iboxamycin and tylosin.
