  • The effects of environmental management systems on source separation in the work and home settings
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - Basel : MDPI AG. - 2071-1050. ; 4, s. 1292-1308
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Measures that challenge the generation of waste are needed to address the global problem of the increasing volumes of waste that are generated in both private homes and workplaces. Source separation at the workplace is commonly implemented by environmental management systems (EMS). In the present study, the relationship between source separation at work and at home was investigated. A questionnaire that maps psychological and behavioural predictors of source separation was distributed to employees at different workplaces. The results show that respondents with awareness of EMS report higher levels of source separation at work, stronger environmental concern, personal and social norms, and perceive source separation to be less difficult. Furthermore, the results support the notion that after the adoption of EMS at the workplace, source separation at work spills over into source separation in the household. The potential implications for environmental management systems are discussed. © 2012 by the authors.

  • Quality in E-learning: A Framework for Promoting and Assuring Quality in Virtual Institutions
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Computer Assisted learning (JCAL). - : Wiley. - 1365-2729 .- 0266-4909. ; 28:1, s. 27-41
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the growing demand for e-learning along with striving for excellence associated with globalization, there are worldwide calls for enhancing and assuring quality in e-learning, specifically in the context of the developing countries. Such calls for quality enhancement, accountability, added value, value for money, self-evaluation, and role players’ satisfaction in higher education settings cannot go unheeded. Addressing the concerns regarding enhancing and assuring quality in e-learning, a comprehensive e-quality framework is developed by taking into account the pros and cons of the previous models, frameworks, and studies of e-quality. This e-quality framework offers a structured set of factors and benchmarks as a tool for practical quality work with e-learning in virtual institutions.

  • Cultural ecosystem services provided by landscapes: Assessment of heritage values and identity
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Ecosystem Services. - : Elsevier BV. - 2212-0416. ; 2, s. 14-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims to provide a conceptual analysis of cultural ecosystem services and how they are linked to the concepts of landscape, heritage and identity. It discusses how these cultural ecosystem services can be assessed and integrated into spatial and physical planning. The paper presents two case studies to shed light on the assessment process. A case study from Sweden combines an analysis of ecosystem services with methods for documenting cultural heritage values in landscapes. A second case study from the Arafura–Timor Seas combines an analysis of cultural ecosystem services with methods for assessment of priority environmental concerns at the seascape scale. We demonstrate that the methods from cultural heritage conservation provide tools for the analysis of historical values as well as historical drivers of change in landscapes that can add time-depth to more spatially focused ecosystem assessments. We propose that methods for valuation of cultural heritage and identity in landscapes are integrated into assessments of ecosystem services to inform policy making and physical and spatial planning for sustainable management of ecosystems and landscapes. This could also provide an approach for bringing about integrated implementation of conventions and instruments from the environmental and cultural heritage fields, respectively.

  • Incidence and risk factors for symptoms from the eyes among professional computer users
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Work-a Journal of Prevention Assessment & Rehabilitation. - : IOS Press. - 1051-9815 .- 1875-9270. ; 41:Supplement 1, s. 3560-3562
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Personal computers are used by a majority of the working population in their professions. Little is known about risk-factors for incident symptoms from the eyes among professional computer users. The aim was to study the incidence and risk-factors for symptoms from the eyes among professional computer users. This study is a part of a comprehensive prospective follow-up study of factors associated with the incidence of symptoms among professional computer users. 1531 computer users of different professions at 46 companies were invited, whereof 1283 answered a baseline questionnaire (498 men; 785 women) and 1246 at least one of 10 monthly follow-up questionnaires. The computer work-station and equipment were generally of a good standard. The majority used CRT displays. During the follow-up period 329 subjects reported eye symptoms. The overall incidence rate in the whole study group was 0.38 per person-year, 0.23 in the subgroup of subjects who were symptom free at baseline and 1.06 among subjects who reported eye symptoms at baseline. In the bivariate analyses significant associations were found with all explanatory variables, except BMI. The reduced multivariate model showed significant associations with extended computer work, visual discomfort (dose-response), eye symptoms at baseline (higher risk), sex (women=higher risk) and nicotine use. The incidence of eye problems among professional computer users is high and related to both individual and work-related factors.
