  • Digital innovation : An essence for Industry 4.0
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Thunderbird International Business Review. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1096-4762 .- 1520-6874. ; 65:3, s. 279-292
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The goal of this paper is to explain why digital innovation is so important in business organizations in order to survive in Industry 4.0. The study helps to understand the new era of Industry 4.0 and the importance of introducing digital innovation into organizations. A systematic review of the literature and studies on Industry 4.0 and digital innovation were synthesized to find answers to the research questions. To improve their manufacturing industry, organizations have implemented digital technologies such as augmented reality, robotic sensing, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cyber physical systems, and remote sensing technologies. These technologies focused on automating logistics and supply chain systems, improving manufacturing system performance, and simplifying automated production systems. Because digital innovations save time and energy, employees can devote more time and energy to creative and innovative activities. Organizations should plan to implement digital technology in order to keep the environment healthy and sustainable while meeting the demands of customers, consumers, and the Industry 4.0 dimension.

  • Busy doing nothing : Why politicians implement inefficient policies
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Constitutional Political Economy. - : Springer. - 1043-4062 .- 1572-9966. ; 30:3, s. 282-299
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A substantial body of literature suggests that politicians are blocked from implementing efficient reforms that solve substantial problems because of special interest groups or budget constraints. Despite the existing mechanisms that block potentially efficient reforms, real-world data show that a large number of new programs and policies are implemented every year in developed countries. These policies are often selective and considered to be fairly inefficient by ex post evaluation, and they tend to be small in size and scope. With this background, this paper studies the reasons why a rational politician would implement an inefficient public policy that is intended to obfuscate the difficulties in achieving reforms. The paper uses a simple competence signaling model that suggests that if an effective reform is impossible, engaging in strategic obfuscation through an inefficient program increases the probability of winning a re-election compared to doing nothing at all. This is because an inefficient reform does not lead voters to believe that the politician is incompetent, which a lack of action risks doing. Intentional inefficiency aiming to obfuscate the difficulty of efficient reforms can therefore complement the previous theories’ explanations of political failure.

  • The “sugar rush” from innovation subsidies : a robust political economy perspective
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Empirica. - : Springer. - 0340-8744 .- 1573-6911. ; 43:4, s. 729-756
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The governments of most advanced countries offer some type of financial subsidy to encourage firm innovation and productivity. This paper analyzes the effects of innovation subsidies using a unique Swedish database that contains firm level data for the period 1997–2011, specifically informa tion on firm subsidies over a broad range of programs. Applying causal treatment effect analysis based on matching and a diff-in-diff approach combined with a qualitative case study of Swedish innovation subsidy programs, we test whether such subsidies have positive effects on firm performance. Our results indicate a lack of positive performance effects in the long run for the majority of firms, albeit there are positive short-run effects on human capital investments and also positive short-term productivity effects for the smallest firms. These findings are interpreted from a robust political economy perspective that reveals that the problems of acquiring correct information and designing appropriate incentives are so complex that the absence of significant positive long-run effects on firm performance for the majority of firms is not surprising.

  • Longitudinal pathways of engagement, social interaction skills, hyperactivity and conduct problems in preschool children
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Psychology. - : Wiley. - 0036-5564 .- 1467-9450. ; 62:2, s. 170-184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Preschool children’s engagement/social interaction skills can be seen as aspects of positive functioning, and also act as protective aspects of functioning. On the other hand, hyperactivity/conduct problems are risk aspects that negatively affect children’s everyday functioning. Few studies have investigatedsuch orchestrated effects on mental health in young children over time. The aims of the study are rst, to identify homogeneous groups of children havingsimilar pathways in mental health between three time points. Second, to examine how children move between time points in relation to risk and protectivefactors. Alongitudinal study over 3 years, including 197 Swedish preschool children was used. Questionnaire data collected from preschool teachers.Statistical analysis using person-oriented methods with repeated cluster analyses. Children high in engagement/social skills and low in conduct problemscontinue to function well. Children with low engagement/social skills exhibiting both hyperactivity and conduct problems continue to have problems.Children with mixed patterns of protective factors and risk factors showed mixed outcomes. The stability of children’s pathways was quite high if theyexhibited many positive protective factors but also if they exhibited many risk factors. Children exhibiting a mixed pattern of protective and risk factorsmoved between clusters in a less predictable way. That stability in mental health was related to the simultaneous occurrence of either many protectivefactors or many risk factors supports the notion of orchestrated effects. The results indicate that early interventions need to have a dual focus, includingboth interventions aimed at enhancing child engagement and interventions focused on decreasing behavior problem.

  • Emotional and behavioural problems in Swedish preschool children rated by preschool teachers with the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ)
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: BMC Pediatrics. - : BioMed Central. - 1471-2431. ; 17:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: There is a high risk that young children who show early signs of mental health problems develop symptoms in the same or overlapping areas some years later. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) is widely used to screen externalizing and internalizing problems early in life. In Sweden 80-90% of all children aged 1-5 years go to preschool and preschool is thus an appropriate context for finding early signs of mental health problems among children. Methods: This study is part of a longitudinal project too investigate the frequency of emotional and behavioural problems for children between 1 and 5 years of age in Sweden. The SDQ including the impairment supplement questions were rated by preschool teachers too establish Swedish norms for SDQ in preschool children. Results: The sample involved 815 children with a mean age of 42 months (SD = 16, range 13-71 months). 195 children were followed longitudinally for three years. There were significant differences between boys and girls on all subscales except for the Emotional subscale. The prevalence of behavioural problems was similar to other that in European countries, except for Prosocial behaviour, which was rated lower, and Conduct problems, rated higher. Swedish children were estimated to have more problems in the preschool setting, scored by preschool teachers. The development of behaviour over time differed for the different subscales of SDQ.Conclusions: The teacher version of the SDQ, for 2-4 year-olds, can be used as a screening instrument to identify early signs of emotional distress/behavioural problems in young children. Preschool teachers seem to be able to identify children with problematic behaviour with the use of SDQ at an early age. The development of behaviour over time differs for the different subscales of SDQ. The Swedish norms for SDQ are to a large extent, similar to findings from other European countries.

  • Hyperactivity precedes conduct problems in preschool children : a longitudinal study.
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: BJPsych Open. - : Cambridges Institutes Press. - 2056-4724. ; 4:4, s. 186-191
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Externalising problems are among the most common symptoms of mental health problems in preschool children.Aims: To investigate the development of externalising problems in preschool children over time, and the way in which conduct problems are linked to hyperactivity problems.Method: In this longitudinal study, 195 preschool children were included. Latent growth modelling of conduct problems was carried out, with gender and hyperactivity at year 1 as time-invariant predictors. Results: Hyperactivity was a significant predictor for the intercept and slope of conduct problems. Children with more hyperactivity at year 1 had more conduct problems and a slower reduction in conduct problems. Gender was a significant predictor for the slope of conduct problems. Conclusions: Children with more initial hyperactivity have less of a reduction in conduct problems over time. It is important to consider the role of hyperactivity in studies of the development of conduct problems.Declaration of interest: None.

  • The strengths and difficulties questionnaire (SDQ) for preschool children : a Swedish validation
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Psychiatry. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0803-9488 .- 1502-4725. ; 70:8, s. 567-574
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: In Sweden, 80–90% of children aged 1–5 years attend preschool, and that environment is well suited to identify behaviours that may be signs of mental health problems. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) is a well-known short and structured instrument measuring child behaviours that indicate mental health problems well suited for preschool use.Aim: To investigate whether SDQ is a reliable and valid instrument for identifying behavioural problems in children aged 1–3 years and 4–5 years in a Swedish population, as rated by preschool teachers. Methods: Preschools situated in different sized municipalities in Sweden participated. The preschool teacher rated each individual child. Concurrent validity was tested using the Child–Teacher Report Form (C-TRF) and Child Engagement Questionnaire (CEQ). Exploratory factor analysis was conducted for age groups, 1–3 years and 4–5 years. Results: The preschool teachers considered most of the SDQ items relevant and possible to rate. For the children aged 1–3 years, the subscales ‘Hyperactivity’ (Cronbach alpha = 0.84, split half = 0.73) and ‘Conduct’ (Cronbach alpha = 0.76, split half = 0.80) were considered to be valid. For the age group 4–5 years, the whole original SDQ scale, 4-factor solution was used and showed reasonable validity (Cronbach alpha = 0.83, split half = 0.87).Conclusion: SDQ can be used in a preschool setting by preschool teachers as a valid instrument for identifying externalizing behavioural problems (hyperactivity and conduct problems) in young children.Clinical implications: SDQ could be used to identify preschool children at high-risk for mental health problems later in life.

  • Residual stresses in a stress lattice : experiments and finite element simulations
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Processing Technology. - : Elsevier. - 0924-0136 .- 1873-4774. ; 209:9, s. 4320-4328
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work residual stresses in a stress lattice are studied. The residual stresses are both measured and simulated. The stress lattice is casted of low alloyed grey cast iron. In fact, nine similar lattices are casted and measured. The geometry of the lattice consists of three sections in parallel. The diameter of the two outer sections are thinner than the section in the middle. When the stress lattice cools down, this difference in geometry yields that the outer sections start to solidify and contract before the section in the middle. Finally, an equilibrium state, with tensile stresses in the middle and compressive stresses in the outer sections, is reached. The thermo-mechanical simulation of the experiments is performed by using Abaqus. The thermo-mechanical solidification is assumed to be uncoupled. First a thermal analysis, where the lattice is cooled down to room temperature, is performed. Latent heat is included in the analysis by letting the fraction of solid be a linear function of the temperature in the mushy zone. After the thermal analysis a quasi-static mechanical analysis is performed where the temperature history is considered to be the external force. A rate independent J2-plasticity model with isotropic hardening is considered, where the material data depend on the temperature. Tensile tests are performed at room temperature, 200°C, 400°C, 600°C and 800°C in order to evaluate the Young´s modulus, the yield strength and the hardening accurate. In addition, the thermal expansion coefficient is evaluated for temperatures between room temperature and 1000°C. The state of residual stresses is measured by cutting the mid section or the outer section. The corresponding elastic spring-back reveals the state of residual stresses. The measured stresses are compared to the numerical simulations. The simulations show good agreement with the results from the experiments.

  • Shape Optimization of Castings by using Successive Response Surface Methodology
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Structural and multidisciplinary optimization (Print). - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1615-147X .- 1615-1488. ; 35:1, s. 11-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, an optimization routine for a thermomechanical problem is presented. The optimization routine is based on the successive response surface methodology where the panning and zooming technique presented by Stander and Craig has been implemented and improved. The optimization routine has been applied to an optimization problem of a three-dimensional beam that undergoes a solidification process. The material in the beam is assumed to be low-alloyed gray iron. The thermomechanical solidification analysis is uncoupled where, first, a thermal analysis is performed to determine the thermal history. This thermal history is then used to calculate the residual stresses in the beam. The residual stresses are solved by using classical J 2-plasticity with temperature-dependent material properties. The residual stresses from solidification are then carried on to the structural analysis where a mechanical load is applied. These are all linked together via scripts, and the commercial FE software Abaqus is used as the FE solver. The obtained maximum von Mises stress and mass information for every set of parameters are then exported to Matlab where general quadratic response surfaces are fitted by a least square method. Taken together, these response surfaces define a minimum of weight problem, which is solved by using sequential linear programming. To minimize the number of evaluations needed, the parameters are chosen to be D-optimally selected. The numerical results show that the residual stresses from solidification might influence the optimal shape significantly. The residual stress results have been compared with those obtained from casting simulation softwares, and the results are similar. The optimization has been compared with a commercial optimization software and shows very promising results.
