    • A recently developed multiple fibre system for treating malignant tumours with interstitial photodynamic therapy was used in studies on rats with colon adenocarcinoma inoculated into the muscles of the hind legs. The animals were intraperitonially administrated delta -aminolevulinic acid (ALA), which is metabolised to protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) in the tissue. The treatment system consists of a laser light source, a beam-splitting system dividing the light into three or six output fibres and a dosimetry programme calculating the optimal fibre position within the tumour as well as the treatment time needed to obtain a given threshold value of the light dose. One aim of the study was to compare the treatment outcome with the modelled dosimetry predictions. Tumour reduction was examined three days post treatment. A volume decrease was found in 85\% of the treated tumours. The mean volume reduction was 44\%, with one tumour completely disappearing. Histopathological examination three days post treatment showed substantial necrotic parts which, however, to a smaller extent were present also for non-treated tumours. These results indicated that the tumours have been under treated and the light dose has to be increased. Measurements of the build-up and photo-induced bleaching of PpIX using laser-induced fluorescence were also performed during the experiments.

    • Abstract Background and ObjectiveFluorescence techniques can provide powerful noninvasive means for medical diagnosis, based on the detection of either endogenous or exogenous fluorophores. The fluorescence of δ-aminolevulinic acid (ALA)-induced protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) has already shown promise for the diagnosis of tumors. The aim of the study was to investigate the localization of skin tumors after the topical application of ALA, by detecting the PpIX fluorescence either in the spectral or in the time domain.Study Design/Materials and MethodsTwo fluorescence imaging systems were used to identify basal cell carcinomas of the skin in humans, after topical application of 20% ALA ointment. Both systems rely on the comparison between the exogenous and the endogenous fluorescence, performed either in the spectral domain or in the time domain. The first system works by using three images acquired through different spectral filters, whereas the second one measures the spatial map of the average fluorescence lifetime of the sample.ResultsA clear demarcation of skin malignancies was successfully performed in vivo noninvasively with both fluorescence imaging systems.ConclusionThe two complementary approaches considered in the present study show promise for skin tumor detection and delineation based on specific fluorescence features.     • Optical coherence tomography (OCT) images of basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) have been acquired using a compact handheld probe with an integrated video camera allowing the OCT images to be correlated to a skin surface image. In general the healthy tissue of the skin has an obvious stratified structure, whereas the cancerous tissue shows a more homogenous structure. Thus it was demonstrated that it is possible to distinguish BCCs from healthy tissue by means of OCT. Furthermore different histological types of BCC were identified. Comparison of OCT images taken prior to and immediately after photodynamic therapy clearly shows the tissue response to the treatment, and indicates local oedema in the treated area.

    • Lifetime measurements of the metastable 3d D-2(3/2) level in singly charged calcium were performed using the newly developed violet diode laser operated in an external cavity arrangement. The laser was employed on stored ions at the CRYRING facility to optically pump the resonance line at 397 nm. In combination with laser probing at 866 nm this detection scheme gave the possibility to record the lifetime of this level. which has a radiative lifetime of about 1 s.

    • Radiative lifetimes of 6 levels belonging to the4f5(6Hdeg,6Fdeg)5d configuration of Sm III have beenmeasured for the first time using a time-resolved laser-inducedfluorescence technique. Experimental data have been compared withsemi-empirical calculations. The agreement is excellent for 4 levelswith 6Fdeg as a parent term. Larger discrepancies(53 and 37) are observed for 2 levels with 6Hdegand 6Fdeg, respectively, as a parent term and areexplainable by strong mixing and cancellation effects occurring in theline strength calculations which are responsible of instabilitiesoccurring in the lifetimes considered as a function of J value withinthe term. Branching ratios for the lines depopulating the levels ofinterest have been measured by Fourier transform spectroscopy. A firstset of oscillator strengths has been deduced for this ion.

    • We present the FERRUM Project, an international collaboration aiming at a production and evaluation of oscillator strengths (transition probabilities) of selected spectral lines of singly ionized iron group elements, that are of astrophysical relevance. The results obtained include measurements and calculations of permitted and forbidden lines of Fe II. The data have been applied to both emission and absorption lines in astrophysical spectra. We make comparisons between experimental, theoretical and astrophysical f-values. We give a general review of the various measurements, and discuss the UV8 multiplet of Fe II around 1610 Šin detail.

  • Atmospheric mercury near a chlor-alkali plant in Sweden

    • Atmospheric mercury species/fractions were measured near a chlor-alkali plant in Sweden during August 28 to September 4, 2001. The concentration of total gaseous mercury in the plume from the plant was measured using TEKRAN and GARDIS instruments. Gaseous elemental mercury was measured using a light detection and ranging (LIDAR) technique. From vertical LIDAR sweeps through the plume from the chlor-alkali plant mercury emission rates could be calculated. The concentrations of reactive gaseous mercury (RGM) in the plume and also inside the cell house were measured using annular KCl coated denuders. The RGM emission constitutes 0.5-1.0% of the total mercury emitted from the plant. The mercury concentration adsorbed on particles was measured as well as the mercury flux from soil. The data presented also include an intercomparison showing an excellent agreement between TEKRAN/GARDIS and LIDAR gaseous mercury measurements. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

    • We report a novel system for time-resolved diffuse remission spectral measurements, based on short light continuum pulses generated in an index-guided crystal fiber, and a spectrometer-equipped streak camera. The system enables spectral recordings of absorption and reduced scattering coefficients of turbid media in the wavelength range 500 - 1200 nm with a spectral resolution of 5 nm and a temporal resolution of 30 ps. The optical properties are calculated by fitting the solution of the diffusion equation to the time-dispersion curve at each wavelength. Example measurements are presented from an apple, a finger and a pharmaceutical tablet. (C) 2004 Optical Society of America.
