Metamorphing : the transformative power of digital media and tangible interaction

- The thesis explores how interactive technologies and digital media can be used as transformative mediators and tools. They have the potential to strengthen and enrich the experience of different transformations that are discussed as being important for practices of creativity and learning, where the engagement and relationship to processes of change is fundamental. The flexibility of digital media and forms for tangible interaction constitutes major elements in the design experiments described in the thesis.Material artefacts and physical space play a central role in how people make sense of the world. Looking closely at practices where creativity, learning and communication are important for collaborative work it becomes clear that this insight implies that the concepts of objects and space carry quite a portion of multiplicity. They are used differently and with different intentions, they are understood differently from different perspectives and the look and feel of them appears differently even if they can be described as “one” thing or “one” space.Dealing with these heterogeneities challenges the way we use objects and spaces. It becomes a matter of connecting the multiplicities and how we configure them in relation each other. The research discusses how the discipline of interaction design can support dealing with multiplicity, configuring and mixing of objects and spaces. They are not only used or inhabited; they are performed and enacted.In exploring these issues the thesis discusses the development and experiments with a couple of design prototypes that rests upon basically the same technology, which is a combination of technologies for tracking and/or tagging. Studies and experiments have been performed in three different domains; design work, patient learning while undergoing lengthy rehabilitation and artistic work and performances. The diversity of studied domains provides a way of talking about design that focus on use and users’ appropriation of technology rather than reflecting the technology itself. From a methodological perspective issues of participatory design have been foundational to the research.Some design consequences refers to how we can not only regard interactive artefacts as bundles of functionality. We must also look into issues of giving form to them as material things and the thesis especially reflect how we can override a distinction of things being either material or virtual.Another consequence is how digital technologies often does not replace “analogue” media and material things, but instead are used in parallel and must find a place in an already existing ecology of artefacts, devices and services. In the thesis there is a strong focus on how human action is co-shaped together with artefacts and technology as we perform specific tasks or simply go on about our living and making sense of the world.

Open Access at Swedish Universities and University Colleges : From Headwind to Tailwind?

- From the autumn of 2008 up to the autumn of 2009 five seminars have been carried out at Swedish universities and university colleges with the purpose of increasing researchers’ knowledge of Open Access. The seminars have been arranged within the project ”Researcher meetings on Open Access” which is funded by the program OpenAcess.se of the National Library of Sweden. Open Access is, today, a relatively well-known concept at universities and university colleges, which presumably is one of the reasons why all the seminars have attracted a great number of researchers and doctoral candidates. The details on how Open Access publishing works are, however, not equally well known, and therefore this type of seminars work in an informative and elucidatory way concerning, for example, parallel publishing, copyright, and increased visibility. It is clear that the libraries now find themselves in a new phase regarding their work with Open Access. Focused information work will be needed for a time to come at our Swedish universities and university colleges on account of the position recently adopted by the Swedish Research Council in regard to Open Access demanding that research funded by the Council must be openly accessible within 6 months after publication. This means that the research libraries will keep playing an important role. In this article we, who have participated in the project, want to convey our experiences from the seminars which have been carried out and discuss the further work of the research libraries to inform and support researchers in matters concerning Open Access.

- Otakt.se startades tidigt 2006. Sajten var en tummelplats för fem griniga gubbar som ville ha möjligheten att fritt tycka om gammal och ny musik.Tanken var att skriva CD recensioner inom de musikaliska genrer som intresserade oss: pop, rock, soul, blues, visa, jazz, hårdrock, grunge, indie, emo, country, lo-fi, americana, metal och världsmusik.Förutom recensioner fanns det gott om plats för olika listor (årets bästa... etc.) och texter som (kanske) hade något med musik att göra. Allt gjordes av lust, och bara sådant vi själva ville skriva om dök upp på sajten.2009 tog lusten slut och vi avvecklade otakt.se men nu drygt tio år senare vill vi ändå göra texterna åtkomliga dels av nostalgiska skäl och för att vi tror att läsare och musikälskare fortfarande kan hitta inspel här som kan leda till spännande musikaliska möten men kanske framför allt för att hedra Björn Mogreen, som var den drivande i projektet och som la ifrån sig pennan och slutade att lyssna på musik våren 2021. Han var en sann otaktsbroder och vi saknar honom mycket.

- Som ett underlag för publiceringsredovisningen i årsberättelsen 2012 vid BTH har jag tagit fram ny publiceringsstatistik ur BTHs forskningsdatabas (FDB) som täcker de aktuella kvalitetsgranskade dokumenten som publiceras av forskare på BTH 2008 och framåt. Innehållet i FDB har kompletterats genom import av ”BTH- poster” från ISI Web of Science (ISI WoS) och Scopus. Sökningen i ISI WoS för året 2012 gjordes 121129 enligt specifikationerna nedan. Observera att dokumenttypen review räknas som tidskriftsartikel i den redovisade statistiken. I kategorin tidskriftsartiklar har ej typen ”Letter/ Notes” medtagits. En liknande sökning I Scopus för året 2012 gjordes 121203. Posterna fördelades sedan mellan de 5 sektionerna (COM, ING, DSN, HAL, MAM) via författartillhörighet baserat på min kännedom eller uppslag i FDB eller BTHs addressbok.

- This paper discusses processes and experiences gained from creating a national portal (Uppsök) for Swedish undergraduate theses, using a common metadata model and set structure with agreements on semantics on top of OAI-PMH and harvesting from several data providers into a central service provider at the Swedish Royal Library.
