    • The intricate interplay of atmospheric shock waves and a complex, variable radiation field with non-equilibrium dust formation presents a considerable challenge to self-consistent modelling of atmospheres and winds of AGB stars. Nevertheless it is clear that realistic models predicting mass loss rates and synthetic spectra are crucial for our understanding of this important phase of stellar evolution. While a number of questions are still open, significant progress has been achieved in recent years. In particular, self-consistent models for atmospheres and winds of C-stars have reached a level of sophistication which allows direct quantitative comparison with observations. In the case of stars with C/O < 1, however, recent work points to serious problems with the dust-driven wind scenario. This contribution analyzes the basic ingredients of this scenario with analytical estimates, focusing on dust formation, non-grey effects, and differences between C-rich and O-rich environments, as well as discussing the status of detailed dynamical wind models and current trends in this field.

    • There are strong observational indications that the dense slow winds of cool luminous AGB stars are driven by radiative pressure on dust grains which form in the extended atmospheres resulting from pulsation-induced shocks. For carbon stars, detailed models of outflows driven by amorphous carbon grains show good agreement with observations. Some still existing discrepancies may be due to a simplified treatment of cooling in shocks, drift of the grains relative to the gas, or effects of giant convection cells or dust-induced pattern formation. For stars with C/O \lt 1, recent models indicate that absorption by silicate dust is probably insufficient to drive their winds. A possible alternative is scattering by Fe-free silicate grains with radii of a few tenths of a micron. In this scenario one should expect less circumstellar reddening for M- and S-type AGB stars than for C-stars with comparable stellar parameters and mass loss rates.

    • Cost partitioning is the foundation of today’s strongest heuristics for optimal classical planning. However, computing a cost partitioning for each evaluated state is prohibitively expensive in practice. Thus, existing approaches make an approximation and compute a cost partitioning only for a set of sampled states, and then reuse the resulting heuristics for all other states evaluated during the search. In this paper, we present exact methods for cost partitioning heuristics based on linear programming that fully preserve heuristic accuracy while minimizing computational cost. Specifically, we focus on saturated post-hoc optimization and establish several sufficient conditions for when reusing a cost partitioning computed for one state preserves the estimates for other states, mainly based on a sensitivity analysis of the underlying linear program. Our experiments demonstrate that our theoretical results transfer into practice, and that our exact cost partitioning algorithms are competitive with the strongest approximations currently available, while usually requiring fewer linear program evaluations.

    • In this paper an analytic solution of the magnetic field and inductance in the main region of a coaxial short circuit is presented. The magnetic field solution is constructed using a mode matching technique when solving the magnetic field differential equation and corresponding boundary conditions. By integrating the absolute square of the magnetic field solution the inductance is obtained.

    • Comparative literature in corporate governance typically separate between countries with different legal origin, institutions and corporate traditions. However, the importance of informal institutions and their effects on the economic development, firm performance and corporate governance should not be neglected. Informal institutions have been claimed to be of extra importance foremost Asia. This paper comprise of a general discussion on legal origin and formal and informal institutions. This discussion is then connected to recent studies on corporate governance issues in Asia. The results are mixed, but a general picture of corporate governance in Asia is presented. Foremost formal institutions and legislations seems to have their intended effect on the economy in general. However, differences between the countries become clear and the influence of informal institutions seems to differ substantially between the Asian countries. The impact of formal institutions in contrast to informal institutions is important since the economical effects for many of the developing countries in the region may be imperative.
