  • Students’ Reflective texts : Reflections on Exploring Authentic and AI-generated Texts
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: SAIOC Book of Abstracts. - : ACI Academic Conferences International. ; , s. 27-27
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • As pointed out by many scholars, AI provides both opportunities and challenges in regard to assignments and examinations. The accessibility and use of AI in student assignments and examinations places demands on teachers’ work in course design and formats of assignments and examinations. This work is a continuous process, in line with the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) according to Boyer (1991). In order to meet these new demands teachers need to reflect upon design, as reflectve practitioners (Schön, 1987). Reflective design may alleviate the challenges with AI as well as make use of the opportunities with the use of AI. In this presentation there are two sets of data. The first is authentic reflective texts (N=20) writen by students and the second set of data is texts generated by AI. The texts are analysed using reflective thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2019). The themes in the different sets of texts are described, analyzed and compared. The two sets of data are then explored, analysed and compared to highlight similarities and differences between the authentic texts and the texts generated by AI. This presentation aspires to contribute to the current state of AI as it is applied in higher education through an empirical study of authentic reflective texts by students in comparison to AI-generated texts.ReferencesBoyer, E. • Sustainability in Mid Sweden University everyday life (HIMUV) : Project design and preliminary results to date.
  • 2022
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The base of this presentation is the project Sustainability in Mid Sweden University everyday life (HIMUV). The aim of the project is to increase knowledge regarding sustainable development among all university employees and students. Thereby, the project aspires to provide the opportunity to contribute to Mid Sweden University becoming an important player in the work for increased knowledge regarding sustainable development. During the project period of June 2021-2023, work in progress will increase and strengthen the sustainability culture among the university’s employees and students. However, to be able to work with sustainably, employees and students must know how the University defines sustainability and how it can become a natural part of everyday work to contribute to sustainable development. Therefore, the project will map the knowledge about sustainability work among the university’s different professional categories and design training materials for employees and students and suggest procedures for its use. Deliverables and goals include suggestions regarding what employees and students should know about sustainability. A collection of examples that show how different functions and subjects at the university can incorporate sustainability in everyday life will be used to produce a digital education material for employees and students. In this presentation, the project work to date will be reported.  Interviews, surveys and group meetings with employees in the area of sustainability will be presented as well as next steps in the project.

  • Teaching With Digital Textbooks : Possibilities And Challenges From The Teacher Perspective
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: ICICTE 2018 Proceedings. ; , s. 77-87
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • An increasing amount of students’ and teachers’ work in the classroom involves digital technologies such as tablets and laptop computers. In this preliminary study, the use of digital textbooks in the classroom is explored through interviews with two teachers at an independent upper secondary vocational school. Both teachers use digital textbooks in their teaching and express difficulties in having time to review digital textbooks and supporting student work in the classroom. At the same time, the teachers report possibilities to individualise learning activities for students, providing structure for students as well as increasing accessibility to the textbooks during non-school hours.

  • The uptake and use of digital technologies in a 1:1 laptop initiative : Exploring the parent perspective
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Australian Association for Research in Education (AARE 2016). - : Australian Association for Research in Education (AARE).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As digital technologies have spread rapidly through all parts of society, these technologies have been slower to gain foothold in schools. The uptake and use of digital technologies and the conditions for technology enhanced learning and school development were studied in the research project Unos Umeå, a joint One-to-One (1:1) research project between Umeå University and the municipality of Umeå in Sweden. In two schools, an upper-secondary school and a compulsory school, the work with digital technologies in practice in the classroom was studied for a period of three years from the student, teacher, school leader and school perspectives. This paper will provide further insight into this work, by providing the parent perspective of this 1:1 initiative. Using the Ecology of Resources Model (Luckin, 2010) for analysis, possibilities were seen in using the laptop as a pedagogical tool for structure and support in learning activities, responsibility for school work, and issues of digital equality. Challenges regarded increased laptop use, difficulties in monitoring schoolwork and students’ focus on schoolwork in the classroom environment. It is concluded that the parent perspective provides important insights for teachers and schools leaders which may help in supporting students’ learning through the use of digital technologies in the classroom.

  • The uptake and use of digital technologies in two schools working in a 1:1 computer initiative
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: DC-ECTEL 2013. - : CEUR-WS. ; , s. 30-36
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of digital technologies in schools provides possibilities and challenges in the classroom. The uptake and use of laptop computers and the conditions for Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) in two schools will be studied in Unos Umeå, a joint One-to-One (1:1) initiative between Umeå University and the municipality of Umeå in Sweden. The research questions posed regard teachers' expectations regarding laptop use and professional development, students' expectations regarding use, expectations of school leaders and effects for the schools as organizations. Based on surveys, interviews, focus group interviews and ethnographically inspired classroom observations, the Ecology of Resources Model [14] is used a theoretical framework. The research contribution of Unos Umeå will be of importance for schools initiating similar projects in the future, contributing to insight in development for teachers, students, school leaders, the schools as organizations as well as for the research areas of 1:1 and TEL.

  • Beyond being green : Simple living families and ICT
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: CHI '13 Proceedings of the SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Syste. - New York : ACM Press. - 9781450318990 ; , s. 2725-2734
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Motivated by a need in sustainable HCI for studies of everyday practices, and a belief that a holistic view on sustainability is crucial to deeper understanding of how to design ICT to support sustainability, we here present a qualitative study of 11 simple living families in the US. Simple living refers to a lifestyle which is voluntarily simple out of concern for both the environment and quality of life. Our goal was to learn about a holistic view on sustainability and the role of ICT in helping and hindering families to live simply. The study contributes new insights about how holistic sustainability could be a valuable lens for HCI, revealing that sustainability is important to a wider range of areas in HCI than previously discussed. We conclude with implications for HCI for how to support sustainable practices beyond being "about" being green.
