  • Get Together: A case of participatory ERP implementation and its transfer to class
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Conference on Computer Supported Education. ; 2
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Regardless of how well designed and functioning the Enterprise Re- source Planning (ERP) system is, the dimensioning factor for ERP utilization will be the users themselves. In this paper, we report from a case study of a me- dium-sized manufacturing company that took an alternative approach to their ERP procurement and implementation. Through involving multiple process owners in a series of workshops with the scope of specifying the as-is and to-be process of the business, the company focused on getting the users involved from the start. A selection of the findings in this case has been used as inspira- tion for a course-module for teaching ERP, and this paper reports from the case and the transfer of experience into class.

  • The Essence of Entrepreneurial Learning
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Frontiers of Entrepreneurshop Conference. - : Babson College.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Principal Topic: Learning is often assumed to be inherent in the entrepreneurship process (Corbett, 2005). Sarasvathy (2001) argued that entrepreneurs are entrepreneurial because they act effectually. Entrepreneurial learning can thus be conceptualized as development of effectual logic. Entrepreneurs use both causation and effectuation logic; however, expert entrepreneurs are more likely to act effectually and/or adapt their dominant logic to the nature  of the task while novice entrepreneurs use predominantly causal  logic (Sarasvathy, 1998; Gustavsson, 2004). Perceived control motivates individuals to engage in action.Individuals often reason from their identity to explain their behavior and in that sense the social identity offers a linkage between their identity and their action. In particular, it has been argued that individual exhibit either professional or managerial identity. How these preferences influence the self-regulatory processes and the prevailing logic has not been researched in entrepreneurship process so far. Thus, the purpose of the paper is to develop a conceptual framework illustrating the factors determining the process of development of effectual logic.Method: This paper adopts agency perspective and social identity theory to develop a framework for understanding the development of effectual logic. Agency builds the fundamental element of personal control (Bandura, 2001), while social identity is defined and bounded by membership in social groups (Tajfel, 1974). Thus, by focusing  on both  the  individual elements inherent in the self-regulatory mechanism as well as on the social aspects and expectations of the chosen role a better understanding of the development process is created.Results/Implications: By drawing specific attention to both the role perceived control and social role identity  I illustrate their importance to the entrepreneurship process and to individuals who manage this process. Insofar, the paper contributes to the entrepreneurship by extending understanding of effectual logic; as well as contributes to more contextualized view of learning process through linking both the individual and social facets. A new definition is proposed.

  • Managerial myopia and entrenchment in industrial firms
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Mistra programme Sustainable Investments workshop May 7-8 in Gothenburg.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper provides direct evidence on the influence of ownership concentration and bonus payments on firms’ investment horizon. Using a fixed effects model, the paper analyses a sample of industrial firms that are listed on Swedish stock exchange market between the years 2000 and 2005. The results show that managers of large firms and firms with higher ownership concentration invest in long-term projects. An incentive system in terms of annual bonus tied to accounting performance leads managers to invest in short-term projects.

  • Non-linear effects of family management on entrepreneurial orientation in family-owned firms
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Frontiers of Entrepreneurship Research.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Only a few studies explore the effects of family management (FM) on entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and hold conflicting positions. Thus, we attempt to shed some light on how FM impacts on EO. Past empirical studies tend to overlook the multifaceted nature of the concept of FM. For this reason, we conceive FM not only as the number of generations involved in the management of the firm (NGI) but also as the percentage of managers who are family members (PMFM). We contend that the benefits of NGI, captured in previous literature by the stewardship theory, should be coupled with the costs of involving several generations, introduced by the so-called stagnation perspective. These costs are related to the ownership-management overlap, the possibility of conflicts and the lack of resources that usually characterizes new generations. Moreover, we argue that PMFM induce negative effects similar to the above-mentioned ones, without the benefits that instead NGI brings. Thus, we develop and test a hypothesis on an inverted U-shaped relationship between NGI and EO, and a hypothesis on a negative relationship between PMFM and EO.

  • Conceptualizing Knowledge Intensive Entrepreneurship: Concepts and Models.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Aegis conference - 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development..
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines knowledge intensive entrepreneurship in various ways and represents a broad framework within which the AEGIS project will take place. Knowledgeintensive entrepreneurship is considered a key socio-economic phenomenon that drives innovation, and economic growth, and is at the base of the competitiveness of countries. After an initial definition of knowledge intensive entrepreneurship and the main concepts, in Section 1 we will present the proposed conceptual framework that will guide our research. Then in Section 2 we will concentrate on what the literature has said about entrepreneurship: we will divide the brief survey into economics (section 2.1), industrial dynamics (section 2.2) and innovation management (section 2.3). We will then turn into what has already been researched about knowledge intensive entrepreneurship by examining KEINS, an EU exploratory project carried out in the last years (section 3). Following a presentation of the main results from KEINS, we will introduce the main points of AEGIS, centered on linking firms, knowledge and systems (section 4). Finally, in the last section, we will focus on analyzing the phenomenon of KIE. This includes first an examination of the various empirical dimensions of AEGIS in its attempts to develop indicators to explore, identify and measure knowledge intensive entrepreneurship. We then conclude with some final considerations

  • The Meaning of Depth in Practice Oriented and Interactive Studies
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the late 1980's the strategic planning literature was criticized by learning oriented advocats, arguing that the emphasize must be more on the ongoing construction of a strategic dialogue, downplaying the use of formal structures and plans (cf Mintzberg, 1987, 1994 and Ansoff, 1991). As a response to this debate, the strategy as a practice (S-AP) perspective emerged in the late 1990’s (Jonson et. al., 2003; Jarzabkowski et. al., 2007). This represented a change of focus to "the doing of strategy", driven by the belief that, in order to understand strategic practices in organizations (including both planning and learning aspects), we have to dig deeper, into the micro-foundations of strategizing. In this paper we conceptualize our methodological reflections on an ongoing project on strategicm practices. From a S-A-P perspective have co-produced knowledge on the strategy process and its planning practices with two medium sized companies during a period of more than three years. We specifically discuss two related issues. The first issue focus on how the deep and detailed aspects of strategic practices should be reached over time in a coproduction project. In the paper we develop and use a methodological matrix, divided in actors (continuum from individual to collective) and arenas (continuum from "front stage" to "back stage" studies) (Goffman, 1974) in order to structure our conclusions. The second issue focus on the construction of roles in co-production projects. In such projects in which the researcher is occupied by a continuous need to construct value for the interacting partner, in order to build and withhold trust. In this context the researcher has to develop a fine sense of judgment in order to choose value creating role(s). In the paper we identify a repertoire of roles taken over time and discuss outcomes in relation to these different roles from the perspectives of both practitioners and the academic community.
