Response of a shallow-water sediment system to warming

- ABSTRACT: Effects of predicted global warming (+4°C) on the structure and function of a temperate shallow-water sediment system were studied for 1.5 months during spring (March–April), using intact sediment in a flow-through system under close to natural light conditions. Although significant effects from temperature were observed during the entire experimental period, many were rather moderate and probably a combination of both direct and indirect effects. With the exception of an earlier development of floating microalgal mats at raised temperature, dividing the autotrophic compartment into a benthic and pelagic part, autotrophic variables, such as oxygen production, biomass, and species composition of benthic microalgae did not respond to warming. However, uptake of nutrients did increase, strengthening the role of shallow-water sediments as sinks for inorganic nutrients in spring. As hypothesized, heterotrophic variables (bacterial production, meiofaunal biomass, and dark fluxes of oxygen and total alkalinity) responded more clearly to warming than did autotrophic variables. Warming is generally hypothesized to push ecosystems towards heterotrophy, but there was no support for this in the present study. Although community respiration and anaerobic mineralization increased, the system remained highly autotrophic during the entire experiment due to the photosynthetic activity of benthic microalgae. The presence of a well-developed benthic microalgal community, already in early spring, appeared to moderate the temperature response. It therefore seems that, in spring, benthic microalgae dampen ecological consequences of global warming in illuminated sediment systems by maintaining the system net autotrophic.

- This final chapter offers a brief reflection on the contributions that the book has made to the previous discussions of why Scandinavia and South America experienced such different trajectories during the twentieth century. While Scandinavia converged with the rich countries, South America fell behind. This bifurcation occurred even though the two regions developed a similar role as suppliers of natural resources as they were drawn into the emerging Atlantic economy of the late nineteenth century. Both regions were peripheral to the heartlands of industrialization, i.e., peripheral in the functions they performed in the world market for commodities. As mentioned in Chapter 2, this divergence has intrigued scholars since at least the seminal contribution of Senghaas (1985), who compared the Scandinavian countries and southern settler economies of Australasia and South America. The string of studies in Senghaas’ wake, comparing economies that were geographically and culturally very distant from one another, thus preceded and paralleled the emergence and proliferation of the so-called Great Divergence debate (Pomerantz, 2000). The title of our book promises an attempt to examine the roles of trade, industrialization, and inequality in the diverging pathways of the two regions. We owe to the reader of this volume some final reflections on the ways in which our contributions have developed the issues that fascinated Dieter Senghaas and his followers as well as those areas that we consider fruitful for future research. We begin our reflections on the role of trade, followed by industrialization, and finally inequality.

Aircraft noise and speech intelligibility in an outdoor living space

- Studies of effects on speech intelligibility from aircraft noise in outdoor places are currently lacking. To explore these effects, first-order ambisonic recordings of aircraft noise were reproduced outdoors in a pergola. The average background level was 47 dB L-Aeq. Lists of phonetically balanced words (L-ASmax,L- word = 54 dB) were reproduced simultaneously with aircraft passage noise (L-ASmax,L- noise = 72-84 dB). Twenty individually tested listeners wrote down each presented word while seated in the pergola. The main results were (i) aircraft noise negatively affects speech intelligibility at sound pressure levels that exceed those of the speech sound (signal-to-noise ratio, S/N < 0), and (ii) the simple A-weighted S/N ratio was nearly as good an indicator of speech intelligibility as were two more advanced models, the Speech Intelligibility Index and Glasberg and Moore's [J. Audio Eng. Soc. 53, 906-918 (2005)] partial loudness model. This suggests that any of these indicators is applicable for predicting effects of aircraft noise on speech intelligibility outdoors.

Genome-scale metabolic models for natural and long-term drug-induced viral control in HIV infection

- Genome-scale metabolic models (GSMMs) can provide novel insights into metabolic reprogramming during disease progression and therapeutic interventions. We developed a context-specific system-level GSMM of people living with HIV (PLWH) using global RNA sequencing data from PBMCs with suppressive viremia either by natural (elite controllers, PLWHEC) or drug-induced (PLWHART) control. This GSMM was compared with HIV-negative controls (HC) to provide a comprehensive systems-level metabo-transcriptomic characterization. Transcriptomic analysis identified up-regulation of oxidative phosphorylation as a characteristic of PLWHART, differentiating them from PLWHEC with dysregulated complexes I, III, and IV. The flux balance analysis identified altered flux in several intermediates of glycolysis including pyruvate, a-ketoglutarate, and glutamate, among others, in PLWHART. The in vitro pharmacological inhibition of OXPHOS complexes in a latent lymphocytic cell model (J-Lat 10.6) suggested a role for complex IV in latency reversal and immunosenescence. Furthermore, inhibition of complexes I/III/IV induced apoptosis, collectively indicating their contribution to reservoir dynamics.

- «Le problème de la parole» est l’un des premiers cours que Merleau-Ponty a donnés au Collège de France : il fait suite aux leçons sur le «Monde sensible et le monde de l’expression» et aux «Recherches sur l’usage littéraire du langage». Tenu entre décembre 1953 et avril 1954, il est bientôt suivi des cours sur «L’institution et La passivité». L’ ensemble fait partie d’un projet global qui vise à élucider les rapports entre le monde sensible et le monde de l’expression. La composition du cours témoigne de l’ampleur et de l’importance de la question du langage pour Merleau-Ponty. Le problème de la parole est constitué de trois parties. La première se consacre aux apports de la linguistique à la pensée du langage – Merleau-Ponty y examine en particulier la linguistique de Saussure et de ses disciples Charles Bally et Joseph Vendryes. La deuxième porte sur l’aphasie et l’acquisition du langage chez l’enfant – Merleau-Ponty y interroge notamment les travaux d’André Ombredane, Roman Jakobson, Kurt Goldstein et Françoise Dolto-Marette. Le cours propose enfin, en un troisième moment, une lecture détaillée de l’œuvre de Marcel Proust. Il ne s’agit donc pas seulement pour Merleau-Ponty de formuler une théorie du langage, il s’agit plus fondamentalement de voir dans la parole l’expression même du monde et de l’être. La linguistique, la pédagogie et la psycho-pathologie du langage, tout autant que la littérature telle qu’elle se déploie avec Proust, révèlent ce pouvoir d’expression de la parole, manifestent les pouvoirs du langage à l’égard du monde sensible.
