    • Semi-partitioned scheduling has become the subject of recent interest for multiprocessors due to better utilization results, compared to conventional global and partitioned scheduling algorithms. Under semi-partitioned scheduling, a major group of tasks are assigned to fixed processors while a low number of tasks are allocated to more than one processor. Various task assigning techniques have recently been proposed in a semi-partitioned environment. However, a synchronization mechanism for resource sharing among tasks in semi-partitioned scheduling has not yet been investigated. In this paper we propose and evaluate two methods for handling resource sharing under semi-partitioned scheduling in multiprocessor platforms. The main challenge addressed in this paper is to serve the resource requests of tasks that are assigned to different processors.

The main challenge is to handle the resource requests of tasks that are split over multiple processors.

  • A case-based patient identification system using pulseoximeter and a personalized health profile

    • This paper proposes a case-based system framework in order to identify patient using their health parameters taken with physiological sensors. It combines a personalized health profiling protocol with a Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) approach. The personalized health profiling helps to determine a number of individual parameters which are important inputs for a clinician to make the final diagnosis and treatment plan. The proposed system uses a pulse oximeter that measures pulse rate and blood oxygen saturation. The measurements are taken through an android application in a smart phone which is connected with the pulseoximeter and bluetooth communication. The CBR approach helps clinicians to make a diagnosis, classification and treatment plan by retrieving the most similar previous case. The case may also be used to follow the treatment progress. Here, the cases are formulated with person’s contextual information and extracted features from sensor signal measurements. The features are extracted considering three domain analysis:1) time domain features using statistical measurement, 2) frequency domain features applying Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), and 3) time-frequency domain features applying Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). The initial result is acceptable that shows the advancement of the system while combining the personalized health profiling together with CBR.

  • Malpractice claims regarding calls to Swedish telephone advice nursing : what went wrong and why?

    • We analysed the characteristics of all malpractice claims arising out of telephone calls to Swedish Healthcare Direct (SHD) during 2003-2010 (n = 33). The National Board of Health and Welfare's (NBHW) investigations describing the causes of the malpractice claims and the healthcare providers' reported measures were analysed using Qualitative Content Analysis. The original telephone calls themselves, which had been recorded, were analysed using the Roter Interaction Analysis System (RIAS). Among the 33 cases, 13 patients died and 12 were admitted to intensive care. Failure to listen to the caller (n = 12) was the most common reason for malpractice claims, and work-group discussion (n = 13) was the most common measure taken to prevent future re-occurrence. Male patients (n = 19) were in the majority, and females (n = 24) were the most common callers. The most common symptoms were abdominal (n = 11) and chest pain (n = 6). Telenurses followed up on caller understanding in six calls, and mainly used closed-ended questions. Despite the severity of these malpractice claims, the measures taken mainly addressed active failure, rather than the latent conditions. Third-party communication should be regarded as a risk. When callers make repeated contacts, telenurses need to re-evaluate their need for care.

  • A study of spatial configurations in social robotic telepresence

    • This paper presents tools for measuring the qualityof interaction in social mobile robotic telepresence. Themethodology is in part based on Adam Kendon’s theory of F-formations.The theory is based on observations of how bodiesnaturally orient themselves during interaction between peoplein real life settings. In addition, two presence questionnaires(Temple Presence Inventory and Networked Minds Social PresenceInventory), designed to measure the users’ perceptionsof others and the environment when experienced through acommunication medium were used. The perceived presence andease of use are correlated to the spatial formations between therobot and an actor. Use of the tools is validated experimentallyon a dataset consisting of interactions between an elder (actor)and 21 different users being trained in piloting a mobile robotictelepresence unit. The evaluation has shown that these tools aresuitable for evaluating mobile robotic telepresence and also thatcorrelations between the tools used exist. Further, also from alocal user perspective, the spatial formations have affected theperceived comfort in an interaction.
