    • During the last decade, capillary electrophoresis (CE) has emerged as an interesting alternative to traditional analysis of serum, plasma and urine proteins by agarose gel electrophoresis. Initially there was a considerable difference in resolution between the two methods but the quality of CE has improved significantly. We thus wanted to evaluate a second generation of automated multicapillary instruments (Capillarys, Sebia, Paris, France) and the high resolution (HR) buffer for serum or plasma protein analysis with an automated agarose gel electrophoresis system for the detection of M-components. The comparison between the two systems was performed with patients samples with and without M-components. The comparison included 76 serum samples with M-components > 1 g/L. There was a total agreement between the two methods for detection of these M-components. When studying samples containing oligoclonal bands/small M-components, there were differences between the two systems. The capillary electrophoresis system detected a slightly higher number of samples with oligoclonal bands but the two systems found oligoclonal bands in different samples. When looking at resolution, the agarose gel electrophoresis system yielded a slightly better resolution in the alpha and beta regions, but it required an experienced interpreter to be able to benefit from the increased resolution. The capillary electrophoresis has shorter turn-around times and bar-code reader that allows positive sample identification. The Capillarys in combination with HR buffer gives better resolution of the alpha and beta regions than the same instrument with the beta1-beta2+ buffer or the Paragon CZE2000 (Beckman) which was the first generation of capillary electrophoresis systems.

    •  The increasing test-data volumes needed for the testing of system-on-chip (SOC) integrated circuits lead to long test-application times and high tester memory requirements. Efficient test planning and test-data compression are therefore needed. We present an analysis to highlight the fact that the impact of a test-data compression technique on test time and compression ratio are method-dependant as well as TAM-width dependant. This implies that for a given set of compression schemes, there is no compression scheme that is the optimal with respect to test time reduction and test-data compression at all TAM widths. We therefore propose a technique where we integrate core wrapper design, test architecture design and test scheduling with test-data compression technique selection for each core in order to minimize the SOC test-application time and the test-data volume. Experimental results for several SOCs crafted from industrial cores demonstrate that the proposed method leads to significant reduction in test-data volume and test time.

    • OBJECTIVE: To calculate normal values for estimation of the glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) for pregnant females. eGFR is used to monitor patients with suspected kidney disease and to optimize the dosage of drugs that are eliminated by the kidneys. Plasma creatinine and cystatin C are the two most widely used GFR markers. Both markers are recommended to be automatically reported as estimated GFR. DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: Tertiary university hospital. POPULATION: We have studied creatinine (eGFR(MDRD)) (MDRD, modified diet in renal disease) and cystatin C (eGFR(cystc)) estimated GFR during 52 normal pregnancies from pregnancy week 10 to delivery and postpartum. METHODS: Each woman was sampled repeatedly and the samples were grouped according to gestational age into the following periods: week 7-16; week 18-24; week 24-28; week 28-31; week 31-34; week 34-38; -2-0 weeks prior to delivery and postpartum (> 6 weeks after delivery). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The 2.5 and 97.5 percentiles for these markers were calculated according to the recommendations of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry on the statistical treatment of reference values. RESULTS: In healthy pregnant females eGFR(cystc) was higher in the first two trimesters and lower prior to delivery in comparison with eGFR(MDRD). eGFR(cystc) and eGFR(MDRD) give different results. No significant correlations between the two estimates were found in any of the time groups. CONCLUSIONS: It is important to distinguish between the two GFR estimates and use separate reference intervals for pregnant females.
