  • Nocturia and Quality of Life: Results from the Boston Area Community Health Survey
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: European Urology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-7560 .- 0302-2838. ; 61:1, s. 78-84
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Nocturia, a common complaint in aging men and women, is frequently cited as the cause of nocturnal awakenings leading to sleep loss, daytime fatigue, and reduced quality of life (QOL). Objective: Investigate the association of nocturia with QOL and depressive symptoms among men and women. Design, setting, and participants: A population-based epidemiologic survey of urologic symptoms among persons aged 30-79 yr. A multistage stratified cluster sample design was used to randomly sample 5503 residents of Boston, MA, USA. Measurements: Nocturia was defined as a self-report of two or more voiding episodes nightly or having to get up to urinate more than once nightly "fairly often,'' "usually,'' or "almost always.'' QOL was assessed using the physical and mental health component scores of the 12-Item Short-Form Survey (SF-12). Depression was assessed using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale. Multiple linear and logistic regression methods were used to model the nocturia and QOL association and to control for confounders. Results and limitations: Nocturia was associated with decreased SF-12 scores for both the physical and mental health components after multivariate adjustment. Nocturia was also associated with increased odds of depressive symptoms (men: adjusted odds ratio [OR]: 2.79; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.81-4.31; women: adjusted OR: 1.80; 95% CI, 1.29-2.51). Among women who reported sleep interference due to urologic symptoms, nocturia was associated with a threefold increase in odds of depression. In this cross-sectional analysis, the temporal sequence of causality of the nocturia and depression association could not be assessed. Conclusions: Nocturia is associated with decreased QOL and with an increased prevalence of depressive symptoms in both men and women. (C) 2011 European Association of Urology. • Connexions and Effective S-matrix in Triangle Representation for Quantum Scattering
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Annals of Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0003-4916. ; 205:2, s. 330-361
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For quantum few-body systems, a method of spectral representation generated by specially extracted sub-Hamiltonians is developed. In this approach, the connections between the geometry of a base manifold, the spectral structure of sub-Hamiltonians, and the geometric characteristics of induced Hilbert bundles are investigated. The appropriate relations between connections on these Hilbert bundles and global invariants of S-matrix are obtained. Some applications of the proposed approach to exactly solvable two- and three-body scattering problems are considered.

  • GLI1-dependent transcriptional repression of CYLD in basal cell carcinoma
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Oncogene. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-5594 .- 0950-9232. ; 30:44, s. 4523-4530
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • CYLD is a deubiquitination enzyme that regulates different cellular processes, such as cell proliferation and cell survival. Mutation and loss of heterozygosity of the CYLD gene causes development of cylindromatosis, a benign tumour originating from the skin. Our study shows that CYLD expression is dramatically downregulated in basal cell carcinoma (BCC), the most common cancer in humans. Reduced CYLD expression in basal cell carcinoma was mediated by GLI1-dependent activation of the transcriptional repressor Snail. Inhibition of GLI1 restored the CYLD expression-mediated Snail signaling pathway, and caused a significant delay in the G1 to S phase transition, as well as proliferation. Our data suggest that GLI1-mediated suppression of CYLD has a significant role in basal cell carcinoma progression. • UVB radiation represses CYLD expression in melanocytes
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Oncology Letters. - : Spandidos Publications. - 1792-1074 .- 1792-1082. ; 14:6, s. 7262-7268
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • CYLD lysine 63 deubiquitinase (CYLD) was originally identified as a tumor suppressor that is mutated in familial cylindromatosis. Unlike in cylindromatosis, downregulation of the deubiquitinase CYLD in melanoma, a highly aggressive tumor, is not caused by mutations in the CYLD gene, but rather by a constitutive and high expression of the snail family transcriptional repressor 1 (SNAIL1). A reduced CYLD level leads to B-cell lymphoma-3/p50/p52-dependent nuclear factorκB activation, which in turn triggers the expression of genes such as cyclin D1 and N-cadherin. Elevated levels of cyclin D1 and N-cadherin promote melanoma proliferation and invasion. By analyzing the regulation of CYLD expression in melanocytes, the present study identified a signaling pathway that is regulated in response to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation in melanocytes. UVB light leads to an extracellular signal-regulated kinase-mediated induction of SNAIL1 and subsequent downregulation of CYLD expression in normal human epithelial melanocytes. The UVB-mediated suppression of CYLD in melanocytes may have a key role in the reaction to UV stimuli, and may also potentially be involved in the early malignant transformation processes.

  • Determiner use in Italian Swedish and Italian German children: Do Swedish and German represent the same parameter setting?
  • 2007
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this article we compare the acquisition of determiners in bilingual children acquiring Italian simultaneously with German or Swedish. We are concerned with cross-linguistic differences in the rate of acquisition and we discuss in particular the Nominal Mapping Parameter, a model according to which the syntax-semantics interface is crucial in acquisition and which predicts similar developmental patterns for children acquiring a Germanic language. We show that Swedish determiners are acquired more easily than German determiners, which implies that predictions for developmental patterns should not be based on syntactic factors alone, but must make reference to typological differences in morphology and phonology. Furthermore, we show that the acquisition of Italian determiners is affected positively by the simultaneous acquisition of Swedish but that no such effect arises when Italian is acquired simultaneously with German.
