  • Retirement as a lens for socioeconomic differences in cognition and well-being
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Working Life Studies. - : Det Kgl. Bibliotek/Royal Danish Library. - 2245-0157. ; 8:2, s. 63-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study conceptualizes retirement as a lens with regard to patterns of social inequality across the life course. It investigates if socioeconomic differences in well-being and cognitive performance differ between older workers and retirees, using data from the HEARTS (Health, Aging and Retirement Transitions in Sweden) study. The results provide evidence for retirement as a positive lens with regard to cognition, following the ‘use it or lose it’ hypothesis. We also find evidence for retirement as a negative lens with regard to well-being, supporting the cumulative (dis-)advantages theory. We test different aspects of socioeconomic status, that is, education, income, occupational group, and subjective work aspects and find the strongest effects for education. Hence, this study contributes with an understanding of mechanisms behind social inequalities over the life-course by using retirement and the loss of the work role as a marker for potential change.

  • Seals and fisheries: a study of the conflict and some possible solutions
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Interaction between seals and fisheries along the Swedish coast has serious environmental and economic consequences. This thesis describes the conflict as it affects four different small-scale coastal fisheries; the eel fisheries on the west coast, the herring fisheries and salmon fisheries in the northern Baltic and the cod fisheries in the central Baltic. Knowledge gained through studies of the interaction between seals and fisheries has been instrumental for the development of alternative seal-safe fishing gear and mitigation methods. For some fisheries the improved understanding has led to a resolution of certain parts of the conflict. Certain coastal fisheries in the Baltic, such as the herring gillnet fishery, are at the point of collapse because of this conflict. Damage caused by grey seals to this fishery has been shown to be much more extensive than previously recognised. When seals raid nets, a significant part of the catch is lost without trace. Seals remove fish from nets without leaving any remains. This represents a hidden loss. Another hidden loss is caused by the presence of seals around fishing gear, which scares away fish from the area. The result is often a total loss of catch. Hidden losses are also evident in the gillnet fishery for cod in the central Baltic sea. In recent years damage by seals in the cod gillnet fishery has increased significantly. Due to the high value of cod the cod fishery is currently one of the fisheries that suffer the highest economic loss by seal damage. Seal-safe fishing gear is at present the only long lasting solution which would meet the needs of both seals and fishermen. Mitigation of damage to catch and fishing gear as well as the prevention of accidental by-catch are two sides of the same problem; a solution to one is also a solution to the other. However, development of new fishing gear is challenging and time-consuming. It requires better knowledge of both fish and seal behaviour. At present suitable alternative fishing gear is not available for the herring fisheries carried out through the whole season. However, a herring trap has been developed as an alternative fishing gear for catching spawning herring in spring time. In the cod gillnet fishery, promising results have been achieved in trials of an alternative fishing gear - the two-chamber pot. Another coastal fishery in the Baltic subjected to damage by grey seals, is the salmon trap net fishery in the North Baltic. A seal-safe salmon trap has been developed and is used by most of the salmon fishermen. This so called pontoon trap prevents the seal from reaching the catch by keeping the fish in an enclosed seal-safe fish chamber. However, in recent years there have been reports of damage by seals also in the pontoon trap. By filming the seals attacking traps it has been possible to identify 10 individual seals hunting in the traps and to determine that these same animals returned to the traps over a long period of time. It is possible therefore, to limit or decrease damage to the fisheries by limiting access for or by culling the individual seals specialized in raiding fishing gear. On the west coast of Sweden the eel fyke net fishery suffers from damage by harbour seals. In order to find a lasting solution to the conflict, seal behaviour has been studied as well as the fyke nets' fishing efficiency. The issue of whether it is the eels or the by-caught species which motivate harbour seals to attack fyke nets was studied. It was shown that harbour seals raiding fyke nets have a preference for eel. Certain harbour seals that specialise in foraging at fyke nets, have developed different feeding preferences compared to those of most seals. Seal-safe fyke nets, which resisted attacks while still being efficient in terms of yield, have been developed. They are already in use in commercial fishery along the west coast.

  • Könsöverskridande vänskap. Om vänskapsrelationer mellan intellektuella kvinnor och män.
  • 2011

  • Characterization of four melanoma cell lines with electron microscopy, immunocytochemistry, cytogenetics, flow cytometry, and southern analysis.
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Cancer genetics and cytogenetics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0165-4608. ; 62:2, s. 111-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Four cell lines established from human metastatic malignant melanoma, derived from four patients, were analyzed. Ultrastructurally and immunocytochemically, the cultured tumor cells had retained characteristic features of melanocytes and of the primary malignant melanomas. The genetic stability was investigated by repeated flow-cytometric and cytogenetic analyses over 24 months of continuous cultivation. The DNA indices ranged from 1.7 to 2.1 and were stable during the entire period. The same was true for the karyotypes, which had modal numbers ranging from 50 to 84. The most common types of abnormalities were: isochromosomes i(1q), i(9q), translocations (1;17) and (3;6), and other aberrations (1p+,4p+,5p+,11p+,11q-,11q+). Abnormalities involving chromosome 1 were present in all cell lines, but loss of genetic material from chromosome 1p was demonstrated in only one of four cell lines when tested by the Southern blotting technique using a lambda MS1 probe.

  • Action of interferon alpha and beta on four human melanoma cell lines in vitro.
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Anticancer research. - 0250-7005. ; 16:2, s. 791-798
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Four human melanoma cell lines with different copy numbers of chromosomes 9 and 21q, as studied by the G-band technique, fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH) and Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), were tested for their sensitivity to Interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) and Interferon-beta (IFN-beta) in relation to dosage of interferon genes (#9) and interferon receptor genes (#21p). The two most sensitive cell lines were those containing the highest numbers of #9 per cell, while the number of #21q copies (receptor genes) seemed to have no influence on the interferon sensitivity.

  • Cretaceous tectonic evolution of the Sava-Klepa Massif, Republic of North Macedonia – Results from calcite twin based automated paleostress analysis
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Tectonophysics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-1951. ; 758, s. 44-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Sava-Klepa Massif represents an approximately 5 × 2 km sized fault-bounded block of dominantly basaltic rocks located within the Sava-Zone, an important suture zone between the Eurasian (Europe) and Gondwana (Adria) continental plates in the Balkans. Its nature and tectonic evolution is controversial: It is either interpreted as a remnant of the youngest Tethyan oceanic realm left behind after the main closure in the Late Jurassic or as the delimiter of a diffuse tectonic boundary between Adria and Europe, which had already collided in the Late Jurassic and was dominantly controlled by transtensional tectonics during Cretaceous times. In order to strengthen one or the other model, we concentrate on the Sava-Klepa Massif enclosing Paleozoic basement rocks, which mainly consist of a layered sequence of metamorphic marbles and mica schists. The metamorphic basement shows deformation structures clearly related to the Klepa event. Our results are based on paleostress and paleostrain analysis of twinned calcite from deformed marbles, and field observations, microstructural analysis, and 40 Ar/ 39 Ar dating of white mica. Paleostress and paleostrain analysis was enhanced by using an automated fabric analyser microscope, and developing the herein presented freeware standalone Windows® executable PACT software (Paleostress Analysis with Calcite Twins). Our results support the hypothesis that the Sava-Klepa Massif was formed during transtension as a pull-apart basin in the Late Cretaceous. This could have happened either after the collision of the European and Adriatic plates, or along a transtentional zone in the fore-arc region during subduction of the last Tethyan oceanic lithosphere. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.
