  • Spectroscopic characterization of aluminum plasma using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy
  • 2014
  • In: Optik. - : Elsevier BV. - 0030-4026. ; 125:12, s. 2851-2855
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A detailed investigation of aluminum plasma induced by a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser in air was performed. The emission of spectral lines arising from Al I transition at 396.07 nm, Al II transition at 358.46 nm, Al Ill transition at 360.72 nm and Al IV transition at 363.05 nm were well-resolved. The plasma parameters including electron temperature and electron density were determined through the Boltzmann plot method using the emission line intensities of the same ionized stages of aluminum atoms and the Stark-broadening profiles of Al II emission line, respectively. The temporal evolutions of the spectral lines belonging to atomic and ionic aluminum elements and the plasma parameters were investigated at three different laser pulse energies. Moreover, the validity of local thermodynamic equilibrium was elucidated in our experimental condition. (c) 2014 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

  • Storm Surges in the Bohai Sea : The Role of Waves and Tides
  • 2020
  • In: Water. - : MDPI AG. - 2073-4441. ; 12:5
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A storm surge is a complex phenomenon in which waves, tide and current interact. Even though wind is the predominant force driving the surge, waves and tidal phase are also important factors that influence the mass and momentum transport during the surge. Devastating storm surges often occur in the Bohai Sea, a semi-enclosed shallow sea in North China, due to extreme storms. However, the effects of waves on storm surges in the Bohai Sea have not been quantified and the mechanisms responsible for the higher surges that affect part of the Bohai Sea have not been thoroughly studied. In this study, we set up a storm surge model, considering coupled effects of tides and waves on the surges. Validation against measured data shows that the coupled model is capable of simulating storm surges in the Bohai Sea. The simulation results indicate that the longshore currents, which are induced by the large gradient of radiation stress due to wave deformation, are one of the main contributors to the higher surges occurring in some coastal regions. The gently varying bathymetry is another factor contributing to these surges. With such bathymetry, the wave force direction is nearly uniform, and pushes a large amount of water in that direction. Under these conditions, the water accumulates in some parts of the coast, leading to higher surges in nearby coastal regions such as the south coast of the Bohai Bay and the west and south coasts of the Laizhou Bay. Results analysis also shows that the tidal phase at which the surge occurs influences the wave–current interactions, and these interactions are more evident in shallow waters. Neglecting these interactions can lead to inaccurate predictions of the storm surges due to overestimation or underestimation of wave-induced set-up.

  • Strain-induced stabilization of Al functionalization in graphene oxide nanosheet for enhanced NH3 storage
  • 2013
  • In: Applied Physics Letters. - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 102:24, s. 243905-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Strain effects on the stabilization of Al ad-atom on graphene oxide (GO) nanosheet as well as its implications for NH3 storage have been investigated using first-principles calculations. Tensile strain is found to be very effective in stabilizing the Al ad-atom on GO. It strengthens the C-O bonds through an enhanced charge transfer from C to O atoms. Interestingly, Al's stability is governed by the bond strength of C-O rather than that of Al-O. Optimally strained Al-functionalized GO binds up to 6 NH3 molecules, while it binds no NH3 molecule in unstrained condition.

  • Structural and Dynamic Insights into Redundant Function of YTHDF Proteins
  • 2020
  • In: Journal of Chemical Information and Modeling. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1549-9596 .- 1549-960X. ; 60:12, s. 5932-5935
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Three YTH-domain family proteins (YTHDF1, YTHDF2, and YTHDF3) recognize the N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification of mRNA in cells. However, the redundancy of their cellular functions has been disputed. We investigate their interactions with m6A-containing RNA using X-ray crystallography and molecular dynamics (MD). The new X-ray structures and MD simulations show that the three proteins share identical interactions with the m6A-containing RNA and have similar intrinsic plasticity, thus evidencing the redundant roles of the three proteins in cellular functions.

  • Structure-based design of ligands of the m6A-RNA reader YTHDC1
  • 2022
  • In: European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry Reports. - : Elsevier. - 2772-4174. ; 5
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We report new chemical entities for disrupting the interactions between N6-methyladenosine (m6A) mRNA and its reader YT521-B homology-domain-containing protein 1 (YTHDC1). High-throughput docking was used to screen commercially available databases of small molecules, and molecular dynamics simulations were employed to evaluate the binding stability of m6A nucleotide analogues. The poses of 25 fragment-like new binders were confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The structure-based merging of two weak fragments resulted in a ligand-efficient binder (compound 6) which shows an equilibrium dissociation constant of 1.7 μM in isothermal titration calorimetry measurements and a ligand efficiency value of 0.66 kcal mol−1 nHA−1.

  • Studies of the central nervous system-derived CAD cell line, a suitable model for intraneuronal transport studies?
  • 2007
  • In: Journal of neuroscience research. - : Wiley. - 0360-4012 .- 1097-4547. ; 85:12, s. 2601-9
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The CAD cell line is a variant of a CNS-derived Cath.a cell line established by targeted oncogenesis in transgenic mice. Cell differentiation of the cell line can be induced by "starvation," i.e., removal of serum from the culture medium (protein-free medium). The differentiated CAD cells extend long processes, which ultrastructurally contain abundant microtubules, intermediate filaments, and various synaptic vesicles/organelles in the varicose enlargements, thus resembling neurites. Histochemical studies demonstrated that the differentiated cells express a number of synaptic vesicle proteins, cytoskeletons, different neurotransmitter enzymes, neuropeptides, and glia proteins. The data suggest that the differentiated CAD cells may be a suitable model for studies of intraneuronal transport, recycling of receptors, and pharmacological investigations.

  • Study of PCBs and PBDEs in King George Island, Antarctica, using PUF passive air sampling
  • 2012
  • In: Atmospheric Environment. - : Elsevier. - 1352-2310 .- 1873-2844. ; 51, s. 140-145
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Polyurethane foam (PUF)-disk based passive air samplers were deployed in King George Island, Antarctica, during the austral summer of 2009-2010, to investigate levels, distributions and potential sources of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in Antarctic air. The atmospheric levels of Sigma indicator PCBs and Sigma(14) PBDEs ranged from 1.66 to 6.50 pg m(-3) and from 0.67 to 2.98 pg m(-3), respectively. PCBs homologue profiles were dominated by di-PCBs, tri-PCBs and tetra-PCBs, whereas BDE-17 and BDE-28 were the predominant congeners of PBDEs, which could be explained by long-range atmospheric transport processes. However, the sampling sites close to the Antarctic research stations showed higher atmospheric concentrations of PCBs and PBDEs than the other sites, reflecting potential local sources from the Antarctic research stations. The non-Aroclor congener PCB-11 was found in all the air samples, with air concentrations of 3.60-31.4 pg m(-3) (average 15.2 pg m(-3)). Comparison between the results derived from PUF-disk passive air sampling and high-volume air sampling validates the feasibility of using the passive air samplers in Antarctic air. To our knowledge, this study is the first employment of PUF-disk based passive air samplers in Antarctic atmosphere.

  • Study on Environmental and Economic Benefits of Photovoltaic integration with Iron and Steel Plants in Hebei Province
  • 2021
  • In: Energy Proceedings. - : Scanditale AB.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Under the strategic goal of "peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality" in China, industries with high energy consumption and high pollution, such as iron and steel plants, are facing great pressure of energy conservation and emission reduction, and are in urgent need of green and low-carbon transformation. In this paper, 46 iron and steel plants in Hebei province are taken as examples. GIS spatial analysis and environmental emission list method are used to build a comprehensive evaluation model of rooftop photovoltaic, and to calculate the technical potential, energy saving and emission reduction benefits and economic feasibility of deploying rooftop photovoltaic in iron and steel plants. Finally, carbon trading mechanism is introduced to analyze its impact on the carbon trading market. It is found that 46 iron and steel plants save 216,700 tons of standard coal, reduce 144,700 tons of CO2 emissions and reduce 1,500 tons of SO2, NOX, PM and other air pollutants every year. The economic benefit of power generation self-use mode is greater than that of grid-fed mode, with an average return on investment of 140% and a payback period of 5.5 years. The results verify that rooftop photovoltaic in iron and steel plants has dual benefits of energy saving and emission reduction and economy, and this data can provide a feasible path for iron and steel plants to use photovoltaic for green and low-carbon transformation.
