  • On the significance of social control : Treatment-entry pressures, self-choice and alcohol and drug dependence criteria one year after treatment
  • 2012
  • In: International Journal of Social Welfare. - : Wiley. - 1369-6866 .- 1468-2397. ; 21:2, s. 160-173
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article explores howself-choice and treatment-entry pressuresare associated with one-year treatment outcome (dependencesymptoms, 0–6, 12 months) among alcohol and drugmisusers, respectively. Informal pressures (from family andfriends), formal pressures (related to work, healthcare, socialservices, social allowances, child custody) and legal pressures(related to the police, criminal justice system, compulsorytreatment) were analysed.A sample (N = 1,210) representativeof the addiction treatment system of Stockholm County wasinterviewed when starting a new treatment episode and afterone year. Regression analyses indicated that self-choice andpressures are associated with outcome among alcohol misusersbut not among drug misusers when controlling for backgroundfactors and severity. Self-choice (without pressures) correlatedwith a good outcome (a lower number of dependence criteria).Pressures were generally associated with poorer outcome.Alcohol misusers who had experienced threats regarding childcustody did better in comparison with those not experiencingsuch pressure. The difference in results by drug type andimplications were discussed.

  • Utvärdering av metoder mot mobbning
  • 2011
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • How are conditions for participation expressed in education policy documents? : A review of documents in Scotland and Sweden
  • 2011
  • In: European Journal of Special Needs Education. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0885-6257 .- 1469-591X. ; 26:2, s. 251-272
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study approaches inclusive schools by looking at how conditions for participation are expressed for pupils with additional support needs in education policy documents in Sweden and Scotland. By using five dimensions of the environment – availability, accessibility, affordability, accommodability, and acceptability – expressions of conditions for participation are explored in 41 documents. This is done in a vertical manner by analysing national laws, regional policy documents, and local-level documents which directly influence classroom practices. A deductive content analysis approach using a protocol based on the five environmental dimensions is used to extract information and identify meaning units. In the meaning units meaningful concepts are identified and linked to ICF-CY categories. These are used as reference points. It is suggested, from the documents analysed, that conditions for participation are easy to express as available, accessible opportunities, or affordability issues, but not as involvement experiences linked to accommodations made and acceptability issues within a context. Documents in Scotland and Sweden also have different foci in terms of conditions for participation.

  • Conflicts in Building Projets in Tanzania : Analysis of Causes and Management Approaches
  • 2011
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The prime objective of a client in a building project is to attain a successful project, a project that has been properly planned, designed and constructed in accordance with plans and specifications, and completed within time and cost originally anticipated. However the success of a building project depends on a number of variables one of them is the way the building team approach conflicts facing the project. This study examines the causes and management approaches of conflicts in building projects in Tanzania. The main objective of the study is to identify issues/areas on which conflicts occur, factors causing them and how conflicts are managed in building projects in Tanzania. As a means to achieve the above objective, the study was structured into two main parts; the first part aimed at mapping up the nature of conflicts in building projects in Tanzania by establishing critical symptoms of conflicts, factors causing them and the approaches used in resolving the conflicts. This was done through literature review, interviews and questionnaire survey. The second part aimed at in-depth study of conflicts from their root cause, how they develop/progress and how they are managed in a real building project setting. Four case studies of building projects were studied for this part. The study found that factors causing conflicts are in several forms. There are those related to the nature of contracts, where the contracts are unclear and ambiguous they give room for contracting parties to develop opportunistic behaviour when post adjustments are needed. There are those factors which are related to role functions when the parties fail to perform as expected. As such the study confirmed that contractual incompleteness and consequent post contract adjustments and opportunistic behaviour of some project participants are root causes of conflicts in building projects in Tanzania. However, the study established that there are sufficient mechanisms to deal with conflicts in the standard forms of building contracts used and when the provisions are against the interests of the parties, the parties resort to amicable resolution approaches. Notwithstanding the availability of mechanisms in the standard forms of contracts to deal with conflicts, the study proposes the framework as a strategy that could reduce effectively the occurrences of conflicts in building projects.
