  • The Extended Television : Using tangible computing to meet the needs of older persons at a nursing home
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Gerontechnology. - : International Society for Gerontechnology (ISG). - 1569-1101 .- 1569-111X. ; 7:1, s. 36-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a person-centred model and a tangible computing approach to better adapt television media to meet two important needs of older people: social inclusion in their immediate surroundings and better support for one’s own reflections. Method The research project was carried out as a part of the construction, planning and implementation of a new nursing home. The implemented infrastructure enabled television watching at three levels: the regular (broadcast programmes), the internal and the personal. The internal level consisted of an in-house broadcast television channel and two media centres placed in common areas. The personal level had individualised functions. The entire concept is referred to as ‘extended television’. This paper describes the early implementation phase of the internal television channel and the personal television photo album. It also examines the consequences of a person-centred model and a tangible computing approach. Participation in the use of the ‘extended television’ together with older people, relatives and care workers, semistructured dialogues with these people, and observations of the television usage were conducted. Furthermore, the care workers were invited to comment on the prototypes very early in the process. Results Both the internal channel and the personal television photo album were used by older residents and iteratively adapted. However, too many factors and routines varied to get statistically sound results. On the other hand, the research shows that the person-centred study design utilised provided positive results in a setting with constantly changing conditions. Discussion This design encourages further investigations regarding how new conceptual television design can enrich the everyday lives of older people. The results also indicate the plausibility of television photo albums providing new opportunities for reminiscence compared to traditional ones, and that the internal channel resulted in possibilities for social inclusion in the nursing home examined.

  • Rhodium(I) hydrogenation in water : Kinetic studies and the detection of an intermediate using C-13{H-1} PHIPNMR spectroscopy
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Inorganica Chimica Acta. - : Elsevier BV. - 0020-1693 .- 1873-3255. ; 360:5, s. 1621-1627
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The mechanism for hydrogenation of dimethylmaleate in water using cationic rhodium complexes with water-soluble bi-dentate phosphines has been investigated using kinetics and a novel method for the indirect detection of intermediates in catalytic hydrogenation reactions, whereby a late intermediate was detected. A mechanism is proposed involving fast, irreversible substrate binding followed by a rate-determining reaction with dihydrogen.

  • Affinity binding of inclusion bodies on supermacroporous monolithic cryogels using labeling with specific antibodies
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biotechnology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-1656 .- 1873-4863. ; 122:2, s. 216-225
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new chromatographic method based on affinity supermacroporous monolithic cryogels is developed for binding and analyzing inclusion bodies during fermentation. The work demonstrated that it is possible to bind specific IgG and IgY antibodies to the 15 and 17 amino acids at the terminus ends of a 33 kDa target protein aggregated as inclusion bodies. The antibody treated inclusion bodies from lysed fermentation broth can be specifically retained in protein A and pseudo-biospecific ligand sulfamethazine modified supermacroporous cryogels. The degree of binding of IgG and IgY treated inclusion bodies to the Protein A and sulfamethazine gels are investigated, as well as the influence of pH on the sulfamethazine ligand. Optimum binding of 78 and 72% was observed on both protein A and sulfamethazine modified cryogel columns, respectively, using IgG labeling of the inclusion bodies. The antibody treated inclusion bodies pass through unretained in the sulfamethazine supermacroporous gel at pH that does not favour the binding between the ligand on the gel and the antibodies on the surface of inclusion bodies. Also the unlabeled inclusion bodies went through the gel unretained, showing no non-specific binding or trapping within the gel. These findings may very well be the foundation for the building of a powerful analytical tool during fermentation of inclusion bodies as well as a convenient way to purify them from fermentation broth. These results also support our earlier findings [Kumar, A., Plieva, F.M., Galaev, I.Yu., Mattiasson, B.. 2003. Affinity fractionation of lymphocytes using a monolithic cyogel. J. Immunol. Methods 283, 185-194] with mammalian cells that were surface labeled with specific antibodies and recognized on protein A supermacroporous gels. A general binding and separation system can be established on antibody binding cryogel affinity matrices.

  • Molecular growth determined by surface domain patterns
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 112:17, s. 6887-6890
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The growth of iron phthalocyanine (FePc) on InSb(001) c(8 x 2) at submonolayer coverage has been investigated with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). FePc adsorbs flat centered on the In rows both at 70 K and at room temperature (RT). However, the shapes of the two-dimensional molecular islands are fundamentally different; while the RT growth results in chainlike structures along the [I 10] direction, as already observed for other Pc's adsorbed on the same surface, the islands are prolonged along [110], i.e., perpendicular to the substrate rows, at 70 K. These observations are explained on the basis of a recently observed new surface phase at low temperature, resulting in structural domains on the surface. The molecular growth front follows the propagating domain boundary that freezes at low temperature.

  • A note on the Mean Effective Radiated Power and the Mean Effective Receiver Sensitivity of mobile handheld terminals
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: 2008 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and USNC/URSI National Radio Science Meeting. ; , s. 1-4, s. 4471-4474
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    •  In this paper we introduce the Mean Effective Radiated Power (MERP) and the Mean Effective Radiated Sensitivity (MERS) as alternative figures of merit of the uplink and downlink communication performance of wireless handheld terminals. We show how they are related to the Mean Effective Gain (MEG), the total radiated power (TRP) and total receiver sensitivity (TRS).

  • Branch cross-correlation in presence of spatially selective interference expressed in terms of the spherical vector wave expansion of the electromagnetic field
  • 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we present an analysis of the cross-correlation coe±cient between signals at two antennabranches (ports) in the presence of spatially selective interference and additive white gaussian noise. Morespeci¯cally, we look at a §45± slanted polarization diversity arrangement, which is rotated around the axisperpendicular to the plane containing the antennas. Results are provided as a function of the rotation angle. The analysis is based on the spherical vector wave multi-pole expansion of both the ¯eld impinging on theantennas and the antenna radiation properties.

  • Mean effective gain of antennas in a wireless channel
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: IET Microwaves, Antennas & Propagation. - : Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). - 1751-8725. ; 3:2, s. 214-227
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The mean effective gain (MEG) is one of the most important parameters for the characterisation of antennas in wireless channels. An analysis of some fundamental properties of the MEG is provided and corresponding physical interpretations are given. Three points are analysed in detail: (i) closed-form expressions for MEG in a mixed environment with both stochastic and deterministic components are provided, showing that the MEG can be written as a sum of gains for the deterministic and stochastic components, (ii) it is shown that under some assumptions, the propagation channel and the antenna are equivalent in the sense that the impact of the channel cross-polarisation ratio (XPR) and the antenna effective cross-polar discrimination on the MEG are symmetrical, (iii) based on the fact that MEG depends on random variables, such as the XPR and antenna rotations because of user's movements, the average, the minimum and maximum MEG of antennas are defined, respectively. Finally, the maximum effective gain of antennas is derived and shown that it is bounded by 4 pi eta(rad), where eta(rad) is the radiation efficiency of the antenna.
