  • Executive Compensation Contracts and Ownership Structure
  • 2010
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We study executive compensation packages and ownership structures for a sample of firms listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange over the period 1999 to 2008. The basic question we raise is whether strong CEOs can set their own salaries and bonuses given the composition of group management and institutional ownership. With the use of exclusive ultimate ownership records we can identify the relationship between ownership and executive compensation. Collectively, we find a positive relationship between strong CEOs and compensation. Moreover, compensation is related to the composition of ownership and breadth of ownership. Firms with high foreign institutional ownership are associated with higher compensation to the CEO.  These results affect the possibility of an all European compensation strategy.

  • European industrial transformation : the effects of digitization
  • 2011
  • In: Proceedings of the 13th Swedish network for European studies in economics and business conference. ; , s. 1-41
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This paper reviews the impact of digitization and information technology over several decades in four industries representing a cross-section of the entire economy. It is based on in-depth studies of the raw material production, manufacturing, retailing, and public service sectors in Sweden. The focus is on the content of industrial transformation in the form of new and improved products, improved processes, changed organizational structures, and redefined industry boundaries. Some of these changes are measurable in terms of their economic impact, but most are not. We find that digitization has been a gradual and iterative process involving interrelated technological and organizational changes. This confirms the findings in previous studies that Sweden is the leading country in Europe in adopting IT and may help to explain Sweden’s successful economic performance over the last decade or so.

  • Examining service quality dimensions in fitness centres
  • 2010
  • In: 13th Toulon-Verona Conference, “Organizational Excellence in Service”. - Coimbra : University of Coimbra. - 9789729344046
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The fitness industry is expanding in most parts of the world. Nevertheless, the amount ofresearch regarding this industry has thus far been relatively limited. In previous research, quality dimensions for fitness companies have been explored and a tentative framework hasbeen proposed. The purpose for the present study is to examine the framework and quantifyits components. A survey has been conducted. A questionnaire based on previous researchwas developed and delivered by telephone to 86 fitness centres of which 67 agreed toparticipate, giving a response rate of 78%. The items of the quality dimensions in the studiedframework were analysed with Cronbach's Alpha and were found to be statistically reliable. The underlying structure of the enablers in the framework was examined with explorativefactor analysis resulting in five underlying enablers. Moreover, the impact of the enablers onthe profitability of the centres was measured. The results should be interesting for managers inthis sector as well as for the advancement of service quality theory.

  • The Usage of Learning Journals in a Technology Management Education
  • 2011
  • In: [Host publication title missing]. - 9781612849515 ; , s. 900-904
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Technology Management is a unique program at Lund University, where a selected number (40) of students from the Faculty of Economics and from the Faculty of Engineering are taught together during their last 2 years of study. Their degree will be a Master's degree. Their views on problems and challenges in today's industry often complement each other. In addition it is important to complement their academic knowledge with insights about themselves and their own behavior. The introduction of so-called Learning Journals has proved to be a successful step in this direction. The learning journals are introduced in the course Project Leadership. Throughout the whole course (2 semesters) the students are writing learning journals and supervisors are commenting monthly. The learning journals have the purpose of 1) enabling personal reflection on the own process, 2) enabling reflection on the own position and part in the group, and 3) through the longitudinal effect of the course; it provides an opportunity to compare journals over time to become aware of and able to analyze the own learning process. In a newly performed Placement report, students that have graduated from the Technology Management programme the last 10 years, rate their education 4.37 out of 5. Some students even consider the Learning Journals among the most valuable parts of the whole programme in retrospect.
