  • Multi-word Atomic Read/Write Registers on Multiprocessor Systems
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Lecture Notes in Computer Science (including subseries Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics). - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 1611-3349 .- 0302-9743. - 3540230254 ; 3221, s. 736-748
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Modern multiprocessor systems offer advanced synchronization primitives, built in hardware, to support the development of efficient parallel algorithms. In this paper we develop a simple and efficient algorithm for atomic registers (variables) of arbitrary length. The simplicity and better complexity of the algorithm is achieved via the utilization of two such common synchronization primitives. In this paper we also evaluate the performance of our algorithm and the performance of a practical previously know algorithm that is based only on read and write primitives. The evaluation is performed on 3 well-known, parallel architectures. This evaluation clearly shows that both algorithms are practical and that as the size of the register increases our algorithm performs better, accordingly to its complexity behavior.

    • Modern multiprocessor systems offer advanced synchronization primitives, built in hardware, to support the development of efficient parallel algorithms. In this article, we develop a simple and efficient algorithm, the READERSFIELD algorithm, for atomic registers (variables) of arbitrary length. The simplicity and better complexity of the algorithm is achieved via the utilization of two such common synchronization primitives. In this article, we also experimentally evaluate the performance of our algorithm, together with lock-based approaches and a practical, previously previously known algorithm that is based that is based only on read and write primitives. The experimental evaluation is performed on three well-known parallel architectures. This evaluation clearly shows that both algorithms are practical and that as the size of the register increases the READERSFIELD algorithm performs better, following its analytical evaluation.

  • Novel mechanistic description of the water granulation process for hydrophilic polymers
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Powder Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-328X .- 0032-5910. ; 188:2, s. 139-146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism behind the water granulation of the hydrophilic polymers HEC and HPMC. To gain insight into this process, properties of the polymers, e.g. molecular weight, viscosity, particle size distribution and interaction with water, were related to torque values measured during the granulation process and to the properties of the dried granules. The torque values in the high shear mixer were determined as function of the binder ratio (g added water per g dry polymer). These methods revealed differences in torque behavior between the polymers, indicating that the viscosity and gelling rate were important parameters determining the torque values. Bimodal particle size distributions for both HEC and HPMC were obtained when performing the granulation in the high shear mixer. A novel granulation mechanism is presented relating the water uptake, the viscosity and the gelling rate to the consolidation and coalescence of the granules. Furthermore, the breakage of the granules is suggested to be limited for hydrophilic granules obtained by water granulation. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Planning and Control of Healthcare Services
  • 2011
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The focus of this study is on the planning of the production of healthcare services for the group of patients in need of surgical treatments. The aim of the thesis is to contribute to the understanding of how planning and control of healthcare services impacts patient waiting time. The theory that is used in the research is drawn from the manufacturing industry, both regarding the design of the production planning system and the conditions of the environment in which the planning system is operating. The thesis consists of a collection of three papers, each paper reporting the results of one study. All three studies provides results that contributes to the understanding of how planning and control impacts patient waiting time. The first study is concerned with the actual planning processes made at a surgery department. The study uses the structure and content of the general hierarchical planning and control system often used in the manufacturing setting. By comparing this general system to the design of healthcare planning systems, areas are identified in which the planning system of a surgery department could benefit from using a more comprehensive design. The results of the study reveal four main areas in which the general planning and control system could contribute to the planning system of the surgery department. These areas are the planning perspective of the planning process, the balance of planning focus between upper and lower planning levels, the integration between planning levels, and the use of planning tools that supports the awareness of the patient demand for healthcare services. The second study treats the quality of data that is used in the scheduling of surgeries. Two methods of estimating the surgery time is compared and assessed. The result shows that an estimating system based on historical data provides more accurate surgery time estimates than an estimating system based on the surgeon’s experience. However, the results indicate that the surgeons are able to identify surgeries that are likely to require considerable longer surgery time than the same procedure with the same surgeon would normally take. The third study concerns both the planning process and how the conditions of the planning environment affect the performance of the planning processes. The study concerns the control of the execution phase when organizing resources according to the cellular manufacturing principle at the emergency department. The results show a decrease in patient throughput time when following this principle, implemented by organizing the personnel resources in teams. The time a patient is waiting for the first medical evaluation by the doctor was also decreased.

  • Reducing throughput time in a service organisation by introducing cross-functional teams
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Production Planning and Control. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0953-7287 .- 1366-5871. ; 23:7, s. 571-580
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this article is to investigate throughput time benefits when implementing cross-functional teams in a service organisation. The cross-functional teams, consisting of key human resources, are similarly designed to work cells within Cellular Manufacturing. Cellular manufacturing is an approach within manufacturing to achieve production flexibility and to shorten throughput time. This paper reports the results from implementing the cellular manufacturing principle at a Swedish emergency department, aiming at decreasing patient throughput time and time-to-doctor. The main approach was to introduce a team-based organisation, also involving some elimination of process steps. The quantitative evaluation of patient data shows significant reduction in mean values of up to about 40 minutes for some patient groups, combined with an increased portion of the doctors’ time together with the patients. The qualitative evaluation of the study show enhanced teamwork and communication, and also improved visibility and understanding of the work tasks of other team members.

  • Remote and non-intrusive diagnostics of high-voltage insulation materials using laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena, 2001 Annual Report. Conference on. ; , s. 428 - 431
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new method for remote and non-intrusive diagnostics of high-voltage insulation and insulation materials is presented. The method is based on laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy. The relationship between the LIF-spectrum and different material and surface characteristics of silicone rubber samples are studied. These characteristics include hydrophobicity, filler content and biological growth. Furthermore, 33-kV silicone rubber insulators that have been naturally aged in a tropical environment have also been studied. We conclude that laser-induced fluorescence has a significant potential to become a highly useful technique for contact-free and non-intrusive monitoring of the status of insulator materials in high-voltage systems
