  • 2007
  • Licentiate thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • A Reconsideration of Two "Welfare Paradises" : Research and Policy Responses to Men's Violence in Denmark and Sweden
  • 2009
  • In: Men and Masculinities. - : Sage Publications. - 1097-184X .- 1552-6828. ; 12:2, s. 155-174
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article compares the situation in Denmark and Sweden regarding research and policy making around the issue of men-s violence to women and children. It does so by drawing on two comprehensive reviews of academic and policy data in those countries that were part of a broader European Union-funded project. Although the picture emerging from this comparison is complex, the overall conclusion is that in Sweden over recent years many more examples can be found of a critical, power-oriented approach than is the case in Denmark.

  • 2006
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • 2010
  • Licentiate thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • An integrative review combined with a semantic review to explore the meaning of Swedish terms compatible with occupation, activity, doing and task
  • 2008
  • In: Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1103-8128 .- 1651-2014. ; 15:1, s. 52-63
  • Research review (peer-reviewed)abstract
    •  The aims of this study were to explore the intended meaning of the terms “occupation”, “activity”, “doing”, and “task” used in international occupational therapy literature and from this perspective explore which Swedish terms best capture these meanings. A literature review of occupational therapy-related journals was performed to gain a basic understanding of the term occupation and related terms. In addition, a semantic review was used: English and Swedish dictionaries were reviewed to explore the semantic meaning of the English terms “occupation”, “activity”, “doing”, and “task”, and the Swedish terms “aktivitet”, “syssla/sysselsättning”, “görande”, and “uppgift”. A comparison was also performed by searching for parallels between the results of the literature review, the semantic definitions of the English and Swedish terms and the comprehensive meaning of the Swedish terms aktivitet and syssla/sysselsättning. An overarching idea of the concept of occupation was found in the literature review and for the purposes of this study we have identified this as Occupation for survival. From this overarching idea, three themes were identified: The feature of occupation, Impact of occupation and Occupation an occupational therapy concept. Each theme could be subdivided into sub-themes. The Swedish term aktivitet was found to have more power, strength, and spirit connected to the synonyms found in the semantic analysis than to those connected with the Swedish term syssla/sysselsättning. According to the findings in this study we found that the term “aktivitet” is the best comparable term in Swedish to the English term “occupation”.

  • Managements' perception of community nurses' decision-making processes when referring older adults to an emergency department
  • 2006
  • In: Journal of Nursing Management. - : Hindawi Limited. - 0966-0429 .- 1365-2834. ; 14:6, s. 428-436
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In Sweden, older adults are living and being cared for under the responsibility of their respective community. Extensive reorganizations in the community led to management having different backgrounds, which may have caused uncertainty among community nurses, especially in decision-making processes. The aim was to understand how 10 nurses, 10 doctors and 10 home care assistants as leaders for the nurses conceptualized the decision-making processes of community nurses, when referring older persons to Emergency Departments, and whether perceptual differences and/or similarities exist. Narrative interviews and content analysis were performed. The managers had differing views, but all felt there was a need to feel secure in order to trust professional decisions as being correct, thus avoiding inappropriate referrals. Management could see nurses' exposed position, but had varying solutions. This might lead to different messages being given regarding what is important and might explain why the nurses reported that the managers did not understand them.

  • Occupation as described by novice occupational therapy students in Sweden : the first step in a theory generative process grounded in empirical data
  • 2008
  • In: Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy. - London : Taylor & Francis. - 1103-8128 .- 1651-2014. ; 15:1, s. 34-42
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A core assumption in occupational therapy is that occupation enhances health. This study is one of a series of planned studies carried out in Sweden, with the overall aim to develop a theory, based on empirical grounds, concerning the dimensions of occupation that may be useful in occupational therapy. The specific aim for this study is to examine the dimensions of occupation as generally understood among novice occupational therapy students. Grounded Theory was the chosen method. Data were collected among occupational therapy students. The students wrote down spontaneously what they considered to be included in activity. A preliminary core category ‘‘The what, why, and how of occupation’’ and five other categories emerged from the analysis: (1) The doing and context of occupation; (2) Motive for occupation; (3) Time and place for occupation; (4) Type of participation; and (5) Outcome of occupation. Relationships between the categories were established between the Motive for occupation and Outcome of occupation, which constitute a kind of prerequisite for occupation. The three remaining categories: The doing and context of occupation, Time and place for occupation, and Type of participation established a form for occupation. In conclusion, the study results illuminated the richness of the concept of occupation and support the core assumption in occupational therapy that occupation enhances health.

  • Reducing Swedish Carbon Dioxide Emissions from the Basic Industry and Energy Utilities : An Actor and Policy Analysis
  • 2007
  • Licentiate thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The aim of the thesis is to analyze the design of the present climate and energy policies. The main focus is on how the policy instruments affect the Swedish stakeholders who are included in the European Union’s Emission Trading Scheme (EU-ETS). In-depth interviews have been carried out with representatives from the basic industry, energy utilities as well as industrial and green organizations. The purpose is to illustrate have how these stakeholders view the current policy framework and what amendments that they view as necessary.Suggestions to the Government are given regarding the design of national policies and policy instruments to provide for an improved policy framework. The information and synthesis have furthermore been collected through extensive literature studies as well as participating at conferences and seminars. The thesis is written as a monograph in order to address a larger group of readers interested in the transition of energy systems towards sustainability as well as policy makers and Swedish stakeholders. The common understanding that the global energy systems have to undergo a transition to renewables and higher energy efficiency due to the earth’s finite sources of fossil fuels and uranium presents large challenges for policy makers and business sectors as well as the society in general.Global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have to be drastically reduced and the work to achieve this has started through international negotiations such as the Kyoto Protocol. As the present commitment levels are low, an important issue in a short-term perspective is to develop a more comprehensive and efficient system with a much wider participation and more stringent emission targets. In order to achieve current national policy goals and international GHG emission commitments the Swedish Government utilizes a number of policy instruments that are either nationally self-assumed or called for by international agreements or the European Union. The Swedish stakeholders that are included in the EU-ETS face a broad policy framework that has a large impact on their daily operations and future investment strategies. It is imperative for the policymakers, i.e. the Government, to act in accordance with the long-term perspective that the climate change issue and the transition of the energy system require. It is likewise important that any actions are in accordance with the operational and investment climate that the business sector faces. It is argued that these aspects are not fully considered as the success of the next national budget or term of public office seems to overshadow these issues. A long-term perspective is required to provide the business sector with stable and reliable incentives. This is needed to provide the economic conditions under which the businesses can realize investments that will result in emission reductions. Short-term policies reinforce the view of environmental investments as a form of risk investments. This negatively affects the possibility of the policy instruments to effectively achieve established policy goals.Paying attention to these requirements is however not a simple task for policy makers as it will require agreements between the political parties. This demonstrates the main political difficulty with climate change – the requirement of a long-term and full commitment by all state authorities. It should be noted that the thesis does not attempt to describe the Swedish policy makers as neglecting the urgency of acting to mitigate climate change. The national agenda is far to advanced from an international perspective for such statements. The thesis however pinpoints some important issues highlighted by stakeholders, within the business sector and other organizations, who are concerned with the present climate and energy policy framework. Some of the findings are as follows:• Reducing GHG emissions in order to combat climate change must include a long-term perspective• The design of policy instruments should consequently be long-term to increase the support for investments in GHG emission reducing technologies• The design of policies that promote low GHG production alternatives within the energy utilities should be improved• The large potential for reduced GHG emission available through fuel switching and energy efficiency improvements in the Swedish basic industry should be promoted by amended policies• Reformulate or abandon the national GHG emissions target goal with the current formulation• Strive for an emission rights allocation system that is as transparent, fair and predictable as possible• The policy framework should aim for a high level of stability through interaction with the affected stakeholders• These factors are inherently important for the overall efficiency of the policy framework
