  • 2-(p-Hydroxybenzyl)indoles - Side Products Formed Upon Cleavage of Indole Derivatives from Carboxylated Wang Polymer - an NMR Study.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: molecules. ; 8:10, s. 728-734
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Treatment of carboxylated Wang polymer attached to a 2-unsubstituted indole derivative with a trifluoroacetic acid based mixture resulted in a side reaction: p-hydroxybenzylation at the 2-position of the indole ring. The structure of the resulting N-3- aminopropyl)-N-benzyl-4-[2-(4-hydroxybenzyl)-1H-indol-3-yl]-butyramide trifluoroacetate was ascertained by a full assignment of its 1H- and 13C-NMR spectra. The side reaction could be suppressed by the use of 1,2-ethanedithiol in high concentrations (16 %).

  • Cognitive Recovery and Development after Traumatic Brain Injury in Childhood : A Person-Oriented, Longitudinal Study
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Neurotrauma. - : Mary Ann Liebert Inc. - 0897-7151 .- 1557-9042. ; 30:2, s. 76-83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Influence of childhood traumatic brain injury (TBI) on cognitive recovery and subsequent development is poorly understood. In this longitudinal study we used cluster analysis to explore acute stage individual profiles of injury age and cognition in 118 children with traumatic brain injury. Repeated measures of cognitive function were conducted at 30 months, indicating recovery, and 10 years post-injury, indicating development. Nine clusters were identified. Recovery was evident in three clusters, two of them with low functioning profiles. Developmental gains occurred for three clusters and an acute profile of higher freedom from distractibility (FFD) and lower processing speed (PS) was related to positive differences. One cluster, average low functioning and especially low verbal comprehension, demonstrated a slower development than peers. This suggests that developmental change after TBI in childhood takes place on a continuum, with both chance of long-term catching up, and risk of poor development. An acute profile of higher FFD and lower PS seemed to reflect injury consequences and were followed by developmental gains. These results challenge previous findings, and warrant further investigation.

  • J/psi Elliptic Flow in Pb-Pb Collisions at root s(NN)=2.76 TeV
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 111:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the first measurement of inclusive J/psi elliptic flow v(2) in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC. The measurement is performed with the ALICE detector in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV in the rapidity range 2.5 < y < 4.0. The dependence of the J/psi v(2) on the collision centrality and on the J/psi transverse momentum is studied in the range 0 <= p(T) < 10 GeV/c. For semicentral Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV, an indication of nonzero v(2) is observed with a largest measured value of v(2) = 0.116 +/-0.046(stat) +/- 0.029(syst) for J/psi in the transverse momentum range 2 <= p(T) < 4 GeV/c. The elliptic flow measurement complements the previously reported ALICE results on the inclusive J/psi nuclear modification factor and favors the scenario of a significant fraction of J/psi production from charm quarks in a deconfined partonic phase.

  • Monte Carlo simulation of the dissociation constants of CO2 in 0 to 1 molal sodium chloride between 0 and 25 °C
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Marine Chemistry. - : Elsevier BV. - 0304-4203. ; 150:1, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Stoichiometric dissociation constants of the carbon dioxide system in NaCl solution between 0 and 1 mol and 0 to 25 °C were estimated by Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, and compared with Pitzer calculations and experimental measurements. The MC simulations used experimentally determined dielectric constants of water at different temperatures, and optimal agreement with the experimental data and Pitzer calculations was achieved by adjusting the ionic radii. This simple procedure resulted in effective ionic radii which were further used to simulate the activity coefficients of salt mixtures. The first and second stoichiometric dissociation constants of carbonic acid in NaCl solution (pK1⁎ and pK2⁎) were estimated from the MC-derived activity coefficients of mixed salts in NaCl. The MC results are in good agreement with the experimental data as well as with the Pitzer calculations. This study shows that Monte Carlo simulations in the temperature and ionic strength range relevant to seawater can provide pK values of the same quality as Pitzer calculations, and constitutes the first step in developing a temperature-dependent MC model for seawater. While MC calculations require greater computing resources, the number of parameters derived by fitting to thermodynamic data is substantially smaller than for Pitzer calculations.

  • Paenibacillus polymyxa A26 Sfp-type PPTase inactivation limits bacterial antagonism against Fusarium graminearum but not of F. culmorum in kernel assay
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Plant Science. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-462X. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fusarium graminearum and F. culmorum are the causing agents of a destructive disease known as Fusarium head blight (FHB). FHB is a re-emerging disease in small grain cereals which impairs both the grain yield and the quality. Most serious consequence is the contamination of grain with Fusarium mycotoxins that are severe threat to humans and animals. Biological control has been suggested as one of the integrated management strategies to control FHB. Paenibacillus polymyxa is considered as a promising biocontrol agent due to its unique antibiotic spectrum. P. polymyxa A26 is an efficient antagonistic agent against Fusarium spp. In order to optimize strain A26 production, formulation and application strategies traits important for its compatibility need to be revealed. Here we developed a toolbox, comprising of dual culture plate assays and wheat kernel assays, including simultaneous monitoring of FHB causing pathogens, A26, and mycotoxin production. Using this system we show that, besides generally known lipopeptide antibiotic production by P. polymyxa, biofilm formation ability may play a crucial role in the case of stain A26 F. culmorum antagonism. Application of the system for effective strain selection and maintenance is discussed.

  • Vitamin B12 and folate after 5-12 years of continent ileal urostomy (Kock reservoir) in children and adolescents.
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: European urology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0302-2838. ; 41:2, s. 199-205
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To assess B12 and folate deficiency after continent urinary diversion via a Kock continent urinary reservoir in children and adolescents.Ten boys and 10 girls (10.8-18 years old at surgery) were operated with a Kock reservoir and followed for 5-12 years (mean 8.5). The follow-up period was divided into early (3 months-5 years, EFU) and late (5-12 years, LFU) follow-up. Patients were investigated for haemoglobin, serum iron, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), serum Vitamin B12, serum and blood folate, methylmalonic acid (MMA), homocystine and glomerular filtration rate. Two patients developed subnormal B12 values (median 107.5 pmol/l), one at the EFU, and the other at LFW. The B12 value decreased during the LFU compared to the EFU in nine patients, but it was still within the normal range. Two patients with renal impairment had elevated MMA with normal B12 values. Five patients had high values of homocystine with folate deficiency and/or B12 deficiency and renal impairment. Plasma folate mean value was normal during the whole follow-up. Blood folate was below normal in five patients at the EFU. Two of these five patients, in addition to three patients, had low values at the LFU. Three of four patients with remaining short terminal ileum (20-45 cm) had normal B12 values at both the EFU & LFU and one had low values at the LFU. Six patients had subnormal GFR at the LFU.To a similar degree as in adults, Vitamin B12, folate and iron deficiency can occur in children and adolescents after continent urinary diversion using an ileal segment. Therefore, Vitamin B12 and folate should be monitored regularly in these patients. Serum MMA and homocystine may offer increased detection of Vitamin B12 deficiency, especially in the patients with normal renal function. Vitamin B12 deficiency is neither correlated with the time elapsed since surgery, nor with the ileum length. Patients are usually asymptomatic, so patients with true B12 deficiency should be identified and placed on life-long Vitamin B12 therapy. An adequate synthetic folic acid as supplements or fortified food is recommended for patients with folate deficiency.

  • Localized orthogonal decomposition method for the wave equation with a continuum of scales
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Mathematics of Computation. - : American Mathematical Society (AMS). - 0025-5718 .- 1088-6842. ; 86:304, s. 549-587
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is devoted to numerical approximations for the wave equation with a multiscale character. Our approach is formulated in the framework of the Localized Orthogonal Decomposition (LOD) interpreted as a numerical homogenization with an L2-projection. We derive explicit convergence rates of the method in the L∞(L2)-, W1,∞(L2)-and L∞(H1)-norms without any assumptions on higher order space regularity or scale-separation. The order of the convergence rates depends on further graded assumptions on the initial data. We also prove the convergence of the method in the framework of G-convergence without any structural assumptions on the initial data, i.e. without assuming that it is well-prepared. This rigorously justifies the method. Finally, the performance of the method is demonstrated in numerical experiments.

  • Impact on quality of life of IMRT versus 3-D conformal radiation therapy in head and neck cancer patients: A case control study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Advances in Radiation Oncology. - : Elsevier BV. - 2452-1094. ; 2:3, s. 346-353
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective The purpose of this study was to prospectively and longitudinally compare the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) outcomes between head and neck (HN) cancer patients treated with parotid-sparing intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and patients treated with 3-dimensional conventional radiation therapy (3D-CRT). Methods and materials Before and up to 12 months after treatment, HRQOL was recorded in patients with HN cancer who were referred to the Department of Oncology at Sahlgrenska University Hospital for curative IMRT. The study group's HRQOL was compared with a matched group of patients from previous descriptive HRQOL studies treated with 3D-CRT. Both groups' HRQOL was measured by the European Organization for Research and Treatment for Cancer QLQ-C30 and European Organization for Research and Treatment for Cancer QLQ-HN35 at 6 time points in the first year after diagnosis. Results Two hundred and seven patients were included, 111 treated with IMRT and 96 matched controls treated with 3D-CRT. Both groups' HRQOL deteriorated during and after treatment. Just after treatment, worse HRQOL scores were observed in the IMRT group regarding insomnia (38 vs 27; P = .032), appetite loss (64 vs 50; P = .019), senses (54 vs 41; P = .017), and coughing (39 vs 26, P = .009). At 12 months, however, significantly better HRQOL scores were observed in the IMRT group regarding problems with dry mouth (72 vs 62; P = .018), pain (28 vs 20; P = .018), sexuality (37 vs 23; P = .016), social contacts (10 vs 6; P = .026), cognitive functioning (79 vs 87; P = .0057), and financial difficulties (12 vs 20; P = .0019). Conclusions This study further supports the hypothesis that the introduction of IMRT has improved the long-term quality of life of HN cancer patients who have been treated with radiation therapy, but might cause more acute side effects. Longer follow-up is needed to study late complications.
