- When the attic of the Huseby estate house was cleaned in 2008, a large wooden chest was found. It had not been opened since being sealed in India and shipped to Sweden in 1869. Its contents reveal a world of knowledge that changes how we understand the history of colonial India and of Småland 150 years ago, and how these histories intertwine. Joseph Stephens grows up in a British family shaped by the global transformations of the nineteenth century. Joseph was born in Stockholm and, when he is 11 years old, moved to Copenhagen where his father George, folklorist and runologist, had taken up a position at the university. In 1859, at the age of 19, Joseph leaves for Bombay. This is an important port city and a world-leading metropole of trade and finance. Here, Joseph is trained to become a civil engineer under his brother-in-law, an engineer working on one of the world’s largest infrastructure projects: the railways. In the 1860s the Great Indian Peninsula Railway Company (G.I.P.R.) was constructing the trunk lines between India’s trade metropoles, Bombay and Calcutta. The large railway network will eventually interconnect the colonial economy, transporting passengers, goods and troops across the continent. Joseph soon becomes a subcontractor and mobilises labourers and material for smaller projects. After some time he set up his own firm: Joseph Stephens & Company.

- To facilitate work on strategic partnerships, 16 higher education institutions in Sweden have produced a guide, within a partnership with funding from Vinnova. The “Strategic Partnership Guide” is a description of and a guide to strategic partnerships. It is formulated from the perspective of a higher education institution. The target group is staff working with collaboration in the area of operational support at Swedish universities and colleges, to provide support in their professional role. The guide may also be useful for vice-chancellors, management teams at higher education institutions, executive boards or academic leaders, to help familiarise themselves with this kind of collaboration. The guide provides an introduction to strategic partnerships and compiles experiences and lessons learned that can facilitate work when getting started with or further developing partnerships.

- The Face of AIDS film archive at Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, consists of more than 700 hours of unedited and edited footage, shot over a period of more than thirty years and all over the world by filmmaker and journalist Staffan Hildebrand. The material documents the HIV/AIDS pandemic and includes scenes from conferences and rallies, and interviews with activists, physicians, people with the infection, and researchers. It represents a global historical development from the early years of the AIDS crisis to a situation in which it is possible to live a normal life with the HIV virus. This volume brings together a range of academic perspectives – from media and film studies, medical history, gender studies, history, and cultural studies – to bear on the archive, shedding light on memories, discourses, trauma, and activism.Using a medical humanities framework, the editors explore the influence of historical representations of HIV/AIDS and stigma in a world where antiretroviral treatment has fundamentally altered the conditions under which many people diagnosed with HIV live. Organized into four sections, this book begins by introducing the archive and its role, setting it in a global context. The first part looks at methodological, legal and ethical issues around archiving memories of the present which are then used to construct histories of the past; something that can be particularly controversial when dealing with a socially stigmatized epidemic such as HIV/AIDS. The second section is devoted to analyses of particular films from the archive, looking at the portrayal of people living with HIV/AIDS, the narrative of HIV as a chronic illness and the contemporary context of particular films. The third section looks at how stigma and trauma are negotiated in the material in the Face of AIDS film archive, discussing ideas about suffering and culpability. The final section contributes perspectives on and by the filmmaker as activist and auteur.This interdisciplinary collection is placed at the intersection of medical humanities, sexuality studies and film and media studies, continuing a tradition of studies on the cultural and social understandings of HIV/AIDS.

Corporate governance and performance of small high-tech firms in Sweden

- The approach uses data from a sample of 183 small high-tech firms, new, technology-based firms (small high-tech firms) in Sweden (54 variables under the headings of work experience, board and advice, financing, motivation-performance priorities, technological innovation and strategy). This study identifies some core areas of importance in corporate governance. Few managers in this study had a strong background and experience of finance and the preparation of business. Only 64 per cent of the managers have had previous work experience before starting the firm. The survey makes it clear that the small high-tech firms are likely to have a strong link with banking institutions. The consequence of these links is that most of the firm's capital supply is from banks, and that there are strong ownership links between banks and industry. The background of the founder does seem to have had an effect on the problem of financing and ownership issues. It is private sector organizations (banks) and families that are most frequently consulted by small high-tech firms (However, low means). It is also the private and public sector organizations, in connection with external board membership, regional development agencies and banks that are most frequently consulted. In the future, it is reasonable to search for factor patterns that can begin to explain and predict the direction of corporate governance in small new technology-based firms.

- This paper explores incubator facilitation of technology transfer for their New Technology-Based Firms (NTBFs). Empirical evidence gathered from six interviews with incubator managers, together with a survey of 131 NTBFs in incubators in Sweden, in 2005, and the findings made in a survey of 273 NTBFs situated inside-and-outside Science Parks in 1999, are used for the exploration. It is suggested that incubators do facilitate technology transfer for their NTBFs. It is further suggested that the development towards increased ability to facilitate technology transfer will continue as a results of the efforts made on the incubator and systemic level.

- This paper identifies different university spin-off (USO) roles related to resource interaction among business parties. It does so by mapping how USOs become part of business networks in terms of their roles relative to other parties. The theoretical frame of reference focuses on roles and resource interaction based on an industrial network approach to business markets. The empirical research is based on five cases of USOs representing a variety in terms of technology, degree of newness, sector, and area of application. As a result of the analysis, three different roles are identified: the USO as resource mediator, resource re-combiner and resource renewer. These roles reflect how USOs adapt resources to, or require changes among, business parties' resources. The paper also discusses the main resource interfaces associated with the three roles and related challenges. The paper contributes to previous research through illustrating USOs' roles relative to business parties from a resource interaction point of view, and by pointing to the establishment of new companies in business networks as a way of implementing innovation. Finally, the paper discusses the managerial implications of the research in terms of the USO's need to understand which role to take and how to develop it.
