  • Ultrasmall integrated devices based on silicon nanowires for optical communications
  • 2008
  • In: JOURNAL OF NANOPHOTONICS. - : SPIE-Intl Soc Optical Eng. - 1934-2608. ; 2, s. 021780-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Planar lightwave circuits (PLCs) based on Si nanowires exhibit several serious problems due to the small cross sections of the nanowires. These problems include large scattering loss, large coupling loss to a single-mode fiber, and high dependency on polarization. Several solutions to these problems have emerged. Recent progress on Si-nanowire-based passive PLC devices encompasses arrayed waveguide grating (de) multiplexers, microring resonators, and multimode interference couplers.

  • Ultrasmall Si-nanowire-based polarization rotator
  • 2008
  • In: Journal of the Optical Society of America. B, Optical physics. - 0740-3224 .- 1520-8540. ; 25:5, s. 747-753
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A polarization rotator based on asymmetrical Si nanowires is presented and optimized for high polarization rotation efficiency (almost 100%). The present polarization rotator has a very small conversion length (similar to 10 mu m) and consequently becomes very compact. The analysis of the wavelength dependence shows the present polarization rotator has a broad bandwidth (similar to 120 nm) for high conversion efficiency (> 97%). The tolerance to various fabrication errors is also numerically studied. To compensate the fabrication error, a post-compensation method is introduced by modifying the refractive index of the up-cladding. (c) 2008 Optical Society of America.

  • A hybrid modeling for the theoretical analysis of reflections in a multimode-interference coupler based on silicon-on-insulator nanowires
  • 2008
  • In: Optics Communications. - : Elsevier BV. - 0030-4018 .- 1873-0310. ; 281:11, s. 3099-3104
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A hybrid method combining the three-dimensional (3D) beam propagation method (BPM) and a 3D finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is presented for the simulation of multimode-interference (MMI) couplers based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) nanowires. This hybrid method makes it possible to have a robust analysis for the reflection properties while avoiding a time-consumed computation with a simplex 3D-FDTD simulation. The reflected power is sensitive to both the length and the width of the MMI coupler and thus one should choose the optimal values for good self-imaging. Furthermore, the reflection could be reduced by introducing tapers between the MMI section and the access waveguides.
