    • In 1743, Adolf Fredrik, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp, was chosen as heir to the Swedish throne. Initially unwelcome, he sought to attach himself to his future subjects, and patronage – including the Academy of Science, Uppsala university, and lieux de mémoire associated with his forebears of the Swedish royal Vasa dynasty – became a vital strategy. However, the military sphere was his most important arena, and also the one most contested by his opponents among the political elites. As crown prince and ally of the dominating political party (the Hats) Adolf Fredrik achieved considerable influence, including control of fortifications, which were the most prioritized building undertakings of the Age of Liberty (1719 – 1772). After his accession in 1751, he gradually lost this position, due to conflicting views on policies as well as his and his consort Queen Lovisa Ulrika’s attempts to increase royal power.The paper explores the rise and fall of Adolf Fredrik as a military patron, with a focus on the fortifications in Southern Sweden and Finland, most importantly the island fortress of Sveaborg/Suomenlinna outside Helsinki. The paper also discusses portraits, monuments and military paraphernalia in the creation of the persona of the military patron as well as the centrality of the military sphere in eighteenth-century princely material and visual culture.
