  • Botvids väg till rätt vård : Planering av ett interorganisatoriskt vårdkedjeprojekt
  • 2006
  • Licentiate thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The patient Botvid´s way to right care. The planning process of an inter-organizational care pathway project.A general problem in an elderly patient’s care – and rehabilitation process, which involves different care providers, is that there is no one single staff that is responsible for the whole “production process” i.e. from diagnosis to completed treatment. All too often care providers focus on their own part of the process with insufficient communication with other providers, resulting in low quality of care. Poor co-operation also leads to increased demand for check-ups, unproductive waiting time, duplication of work and other inefficiencies. A solution to these co-ordination problems can be to introduce process orientation (integrated care pathways). A process view requires the concerned staff to look at their own work with other eyes. The process view implies that they need to change focus to what is best from the patient’s point of view.Experiences from earlier reforms, that were centrally initiated and managed, show that the concerned staff (doctors, nurses etc.) had too little influence during the planning and implementation phases. Several official reports therefore call attention to the need for broad participation from all of the different staff categories in organizational development. In this thesis a qualitative case study of the planning process of an inter-organizational project between primary care, hospital treatment and municipality care is presented. The aim of the project was to develop an organization that could support a process view among the care providers. The focus of the thesis is on how the project management acted to shape the necessary conditions for a process view to enable the professional staff to participate, and on the role that the change strategy played in this connection. The results show that the professional staff had an active role in the management of the project. The initiator was a doctor, who managed the project team of 50 care staff together with a project leader. This team had a series of meetings and conferences during ten months. By exchanging ideas and experiences they found solutions to the operative problems that were the starting points for the project. They developed an action plan in consensus, with prioritized activities, which is now to be implemented.

  • Fund Managers as Cultured Observers
  • 2008
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • During the last few decades, Intellectual Capital (IC) has been recognized as an important resource in firms. In order to improve IC reporting, a number of guidelines have been initiated in Europe and in Japan. The capital market has been one important target group for these initiatives. However, actors on the capital market seem to be ambivalent towards IC information. They both demand and find such information useful, and at the same time, they seem to lack interest in it. This thesis contains five papers that aim to explore how actors on the capital market deal with IC information. A qualitative research approach is applied involving interviews with 14 fund managers in Stockholm. In the analysis of the data, fund managers are seen as ‘cultured observers’, meaning they are influenced by social forces when they observe IC information. Three social forces were identified as being imposed on the respondents. These forces represent social logics that are created in the relationship between the fund managers and ·         the organization in which they work ·         the market price and rationale ·         the agendas around certain companies The seemingly increased complexity of IC information does not always bother fund managers. The rationale of interacting social networks reduces this complexity in order for the information to make sense in their meaning-based reproduction. With respect to ethical funds, this thesis suggests that the rationales of the three social forces above do not seem to have changed in order to include social aspects. Instead, these aspects are taken care of elsewhere in organizations, leaving fund managers outside of their potential for compromising market rationales. Furthermore, fund managers tend to reduce the complexity of information concerning personnel and the working environment by depending on having the right management in organisations. This thesis contributes by increasing our understanding of how the social environment influences fund managers when they observe IC information. By regarding fund managers as ‘cultured observers’ it explores how complexity is dealt with, an approach that contrasts with assumptions within finance theory about profit maximizing actors. Here, the market price and rationale represent one social force among many.

  • Can health be subject to management control? Suggestions and experiences
  • 2006
  • In: Stress in health and disease. - Darmstadt : Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. - 9783527312214 ; , s. 22-
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • During the past decades, important steps have been taken to develop management and management control models that can be used relative to intangible resources such as health and competence. In this chapter we will account for ideas, experiences and the possible future for some of these models. We will draw upon experiences from Sweden. One of the reasons for doing so is that Sweden has been the subject of numerous initiatives and efforts regarding management and management control of different intangible resources. We have selected models that address health or human resources in a working environment context. The pedagogical idea underlying our selection is to illuminate problems and possibilities regarding management control and organisational change targeting health as an intangible resource.  After a brief resume concerning research on the correlation between health and profitability, we pass on to discuss experiences and possibilities of the different models. The models discussed are health in the balance sheet, health in the profit and loss account, human resource costing and accounting, recent management control methods and health statements. After presenting a case we conclude with a summary of different dilemmas.
