  • Of maces and men. Symbols in a landscape of cultural diversity
  • 2004
  • In: Journal of Nordic Archaeological Science. - 1650-1519. ; 14, s. 71-78
  • Journal article (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Norms and conventions have applied to most of our material culture. This seems to be especially obvious regarding Neolithic flint axes. The distinction between the unpolished and the polished flint axe is one aspect of the symbolism that is inherent in or ascribed to the axes when they become maces, with an important position in social life. The individuals and the society become not only owners of axes but also holders of maces. Maces and man became interacting entities. Never, or very rarely, was an unpolished axe deposited in a grave, while it was fully accepted as part of a hoard. It is reasonable to work on the assumption that the Neolithic societies gave at least some parts of their material culture characteristics similar or corresponding to the human members. Axes, like humans, were integrated into everyday life, being involved in ceremonies dependent on regularly recurring characteristics. Interaction between the human and the material cultural sphere, or at least some of the material culture, seems to be much closer or even more integrated than has usually been assumed.

  • On integral equation methods of solution to eddy current interaction problems
  • 2014
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The eddy current method is used for nondestructive evaluation of conducting materials. To achieve a greater knowledge and insure safe and reliable evaluation methods, the use of mathematical models and simulations are needed. In this thesis integral equation methods of solutions are applied to solve the eddy current interaction problem which essentially is a scattering problem. This involves a Green's function technique to generate integral relations between the surface fields and the fields everywhere else. Then the key is to use suitable basis functions to describe the surface fields. In the end numerical integration is used to obtain the solution, the change of impedance due to the scatterer. The scatterer in this case is a model of a defect and the source is a single conductor or a single coil. The solutions are compared to Finite Element solutions with good agreement. This thesis includes four papers where two different methods of solution have been used. In the first paper, the T matrix method is applied on a 2D problem with a subsurface defect. The second paper presents a boundary integral equation method solution to a problem with a surface-breaking flat and infinitely long crack. In the third and fourth papers the 3D problem of a rectangular crack is solved also using a boundary integral method. In the third paper the surface of the material is a plane and in the fourth it is the inside of a cylindrical hole. All papers contain comparisons with finite elements calculations and good agreement is found for all methods presented in the present thesis. The advantage of these methods compared with the finite element method is the numerical efficiency.

  • Placement and Monitoring of Orchestrated Cloud Services
  • 2015
  • Licentiate thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Cloud computing offers pay-per-use on-demand access to computer resources for hosting program execution environments for software service deployment. Management of cloud resources includes determining, based on current monitored resource availability, which part(s) of a computational infrastructure should host such program execution environments in a process called placement. Our work defines directives that lets consumers of cloud resources influence placement to express relationships between cloud services (orchestration) and deployment constraints to uphold for related service components, without surrendering the ultimate control over placement from the infrastructure owner. The infrastructure owner remains free to define their policies and placement optimization criteria, e.g., to consolidate work that needs to be done to as few physical host machines as possible for power savings reasons. We show how the placement process can be adjusted to take such influence into account and validate through simulations that the adjustments produce the correct result without too large computational impact on the placement process itself. Further, we present a technique for transferring large data files between cloud data centers that operate in (separate) cloud federations that avoids repeated transfers in a delegation chain between members of (different) cloud federations. Finally, we present a non-invasive method of extracting monitoring data from a service deployed in a cloud federation, and a framework for making monitoring information available and understandable in spite of technical differences between monitoring systems used in cloud federations.

  • Principi di Yacht Design (in Italian)
  • 2022
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Principles of Yacht Design has established itself as the standard book on the subject for practising designers, naval architecture students, discerning boat owners as well as the boatbuilding industry as a whole. The fifth edition is completely revised and expanded. It examines every aspect of the process of yacht and powerboat design. The new edition includes new findings from recent research in aero and hydrodynamics, as well as covering the most recent changes to building standards. The authors have used a newly built 41-foot performance cruiser to demonstrate the practical application of yacht design theory. This new edition includes photos of the building process and detailed explanations.
