  • On singlet metastable states, ion flux and ion energy in single and dual frequency capacitively coupled oxygen discharges
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics D. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 0022-3727 .- 1361-6463. ; 50:17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We apply particle-in-cell simulations with Monte Carlo collisions to study the influence of the singlet metastable states on the ion energy distribution in single and dual frequency capacitively coupled oxygen discharges. For this purpose, the one-dimensional object-oriented particle-in-cell Monte Carlo collision code oopd1 is used, in which the discharge model includes the following nine species: electrons, the neutrals O(3P) and O), the negative ions O−, the positive ions O+ and O, and the metastables O(1D), O and O2(b). Earlier, we have explored the effects of adding the species O) and O2(b), and an energy-dependent secondary electron emission yield for oxygen ions and neutrals, to the discharge model. We found that including the two molecular singlet metastable states decreases the ohmic heating and the effective electron temperature in the bulk region (the electronegative core). Here we explore how these metastable states influence dual frequency discharges consisting of a fundamental frequency and the lowest even harmonics. Including or excluding the detachment reactions of the metastables O) and O2(b) can shift the peak electron temperature from the grounded to the powered electrode or vice versa, depending on the phase difference of the two applied frequencies. These metastable states can furthermore significantly influence the peak of the ion energy distribution for O-ions bombarding the powered electrode, and hence the average ion energy upon bombardment of the electrode, and lower the ion flux.

  • Enhanced sputtering and incorporation of Mn in implanted GaAs and ZnO nanowires
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics. - Bristol : IOP Publishing. - 1361-6463 .- 0022-3727. ; 47:39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We simulated and experimentally investigated the sputter yield of ZnO and GaAs nanowires, which were implanted with energetic Mn ions at room temperature. The resulting thinning of the nanowires and the dopant concentration with increasing Mn ion fluency were measured by accurate scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and nano-x-Ray Fluorescence (nanoXRF) quantification, respectively. We observed a clearly enhanced sputter yield for the irradiated nanowires compared to bulk, which is also corroborated by iradina simulations. These show a maximum if the ion range matches the nanowire diameter. As a consequence of the erosion thinning of the nanowire, the incorporation of the Mn dopants is also enhanced and increases non-linearly with increasing ion fluency.

  • Large homogeneous mono-/bi-layer graphene on 6H-SiC(0001) and buffer layer elimination
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: JOURNAL OF PHYSICS D-APPLIED PHYSICS. - : Iop Publishing Ltd. - 0022-3727 .- 1361-6463. ; 43:37, s. 374010-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we discuss and review results of recent studies of epitaxial growth of graphene on silicon carbide. The presentation is focused on high quality, large and uniform layer graphene growth on the SiC(0 0 0 1) surface and the results of using different growth techniques and parameters are compared. This is an important subject because access to high-quality graphene sheets on a suitable substrate plays a crucial role for future electronics applications involving patterning. Different techniques used to characterize the graphene grown are summarized. We moreover show that atomic hydrogen exposures can convert a monolayer graphene sample on SiC(0 0 0 1) to bi-layer graphene without the carbon buffer layer. Thus, a new process to prepare large, homogeneous stable bi-layer graphene sheets on SiC(0 0 0 1) is presented. The process is shown to be reversible and should be very attractive for various applications, including hydrogen storage.

  • Surface optical reflectance combined with x-ray techniques during gas-surface interactions
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics D. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 0022-3727 .- 1361-6463. ; 53:22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High energy surface x-ray diffraction (HESXRD), x-ray reflectivity (XRR), mass spectrometry (MS) and surface optical reflectance (SOR) have been combined to simultaneously obtain sub-second information on the surface structure and morphology from a Pd(100) model catalyst during in situ oxidation at elevated temperatures and pressures resulting in Pd bulk oxide formation. The results show a strong correlation between the HESXRD and SOR signal intensities during the experiment, enabling phase determination and a time-resolved thickness estimation of the oxide by HESXRD, complemented by XRR measurements. The experiments show a remarkable sensitivity of the SOR to changes in the surface phase and morphology, in particular to the initial stages of oxidation/reduction. The data imply that SOR can detect the formation of an ultrathin PdO surface oxide layer of only 2-3 angstrom thickness.

  • Near ambient pressure photoelectron spectro-microscopy : From gas-solid interface to operando devices
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0022-3727 .- 1361-6463. ; 54:20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Near ambient pressure scanning photoelectron microscopy adds to the widely used photoemission spectroscopy and its chemically selective capability two key features: (1) the possibility to chemically analyse samples in a more realistic gas pressure condition and (2) the capability to investigate a system at the relevant spatial scale. To achieve these goals the approach developed at the ESCA Microscopy beamline at the Elettra Synchrotron facility combines the submicron lateral resolution of a Scanning Photoelectron Microscope with a custom designed Near Ambient Pressure Cell where a gas pressure up to 0.1 mbar can be achieved. In this manuscript a review of experiments performed with this unique setup will be presented to illustrate its potentiality in both fundamental and applicative research such as the oxidation reactivity and gas sensitivity of metal oxides and semiconductors. In particular, the capability to perform operando experiments with this setup opens the possibility to study operating devices and to properly address the real nature of the studied systems, because if microscopy and spectroscopy are simultaneously combined in a single technique it can yield to more conclusive results.

  • Absorption and optimal plasmonic resonances for small ellipsoidal particles in lossy media
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics D. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 0022-3727 .- 1361-6463. ; 50:34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new simplified formula is derived for the absorption cross section of small dielectric ellipsoidal particles embedded in lossy media. The new expression leads directly to a closed form solution for the optimal conjugate match with respect to the surrounding medium, i.e. the optimal permittivity of the ellipsoidal particle that maximizes the absorption at any given frequency. This defines the optimal plasmonic resonance for the ellipsoid. The optimal conjugate match represents a metamaterial in the sense that the corresponding optimal permittivity function may have negative real part (inductive properties), and can not in general be implemented as a passive material over a given bandwidth. A necessary and sufficient condition is derived for the feasibility of tuning the Drude model to the optimal conjugate match at a single frequency, and it is found that all the prolate spheroids and some of the (not too flat) oblate spheroids can be tuned into optimal plasmonic resonance at any desired center frequency. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the analysis. Except for the general understanding of plasmonic resonances in lossy media, it is also anticipated that the new results can be useful for feasibility studies with e.g. the radiotherapeutic hyperthermia based methods to treat cancer based on electrophoretic heating in gold nanoparticle suspensions using microwave radiation.

  • Temporal dynamics of femtosecond-TALIF of atomic hydrogen and oxygen in a nanosecond repetitively pulsed discharge-assisted methane-air flame
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0022-3727 .- 1361-6463. ; 54:27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The temporal dynamics of the spatial distribution of atomic hydrogen and oxygen in a lean methane-air flame, forced by a nanosecond repetitively pulsed discharge-induced plasma, are investigated via femtosecond two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence technique. Plasma luminescence that interferes with the fluorescence from H and O atoms was observed to decay completely within 15 ns, which is the minimum delay required for imaging measurements with respect to the discharge occurrence. During discharge, H atoms in the excited state rather than the ground state, produced by electron-impact dissociation processes, are detected at the flame front. It was found that the temporal evolution of H and O fluorescence intensity during a cycle of 100 µs between two discharge pulses remains constant. Finally, the decay time of O-atoms produced by the discharge in the fresh methane-air mixture was about 2 µs, which suggests a faster reaction between O-atoms and methane than in air.

  • Binary acoustic trapping in a glass capillary
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics D. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 0022-3727 .- 1361-6463. ; 54:35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Acoustic trapping is a useful method for handling biological samples in microfluidic systems. The aim of this work is twofold: first to investigate the physics behind acoustic trapping in a glass capillary and secondly to perform binary acoustic trapping. The latter is achieved by increasing the density of the fluid in the trapping channel. The trapping device consisted of a glass capillary with a rectangular inner cross-section (height 200 µm × width 2000 µm) equipped with a small piezoelectric transducer. The piezoelectric transducer was actuated at 4 MHz to generate a localised half-wavelength acoustic standing-wave-field in the capillary, comprising of a pressure field and a velocity field. Under acoustic actuation, only particles with higher density than the fluid, i.e. having a positive dipole scattering coefficient, were trapped in the flow direction. The numerical and analytical modelling of the system show that the trapping force which retains the particles against the flow depends only on the dipole scattering coefficient in the pressure nodal plane of the acoustic field. The analytical model also reveals that the retention force is proportional to the dipole scattering coefficient, which agrees with our experimental findings. Next, we showed that in a mixture of melamine particles and polystyrene particles in a high-density fluid it is possible to selectively trap melamine particles, since melamine particles have higher density than polystyrene particles.

  • Phase diagrams for understanding gold-seeded growth of GaAs and InAs nanowires
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0022-3727 .- 1361-6463. ; 50:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Phase diagrams are useful tools to study the phase equilibria of nanowire materials systems because the growth of nanowires is accompanied by phase formation and phase transition. We have modeled the phase equilibria of the As-Au-Ga ternary system by means of the CALPHAD method. This method is a well-established semi-empirical technique for thermodynamic modeling in which Gibbs energy functions with free parameters are defined for all phases in a system followed by adjusting these parameters to the experimental data. Using the resulting As-Au-Ga thermodynamic database, four vertical cuts of this ternary system are calculated and all show good agreement with experiments. This ternary system is particularly useful for predicting the state of the Au seed alloys when growing GaAs nanowires and we discuss such predictions. Similar calculations are performed for Au-seeded InAs nanowires. We show that the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) growth fails for InAs nanowires, while GaAs nanowires can grow from a liquid particle. Our calculations are in agreement with experimental data on the growth of Au-seeded GaAs and InAs nanowires.

  • The 2022 magneto-optics roadmap
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics D. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 0022-3727 .- 1361-6463. ; 55:46
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Magneto-optical (MO) effects, viz. magnetically induced changes in light intensity or polarization upon reflection from or transmission through a magnetic sample, were discovered over a century and a half ago. Initially they played a crucially relevant role in unveiling the fundamentals of electromagnetism and quantum mechanics. A more broad-based relevance and wide-spread use of MO methods, however, remained quite limited until the 1960s due to a lack of suitable, reliable and easy-to-operate light sources. The advent of Laser technology and the availability of other novel light sources led to an enormous expansion of MO measurement techniques and applications that continues to this day (see section 1). The here-assembled roadmap article is intended to provide a meaningful survey over many of the most relevant recent developments, advances, and emerging research directions in a rather condensed form, so that readers can easily access a significant overview about this very dynamic research field. While light source technology and other experimental developments were crucial in the establishment of today's magneto-optics, progress also relies on an ever-increasing theoretical understanding of MO effects from a quantum mechanical perspective (see section 2), as well as using electromagnetic theory and modelling approaches (see section 3) to enable quantitatively reliable predictions for ever more complex materials, metamaterials, and device geometries. The latest advances in established MO methodologies and especially the utilization of the MO Kerr effect (MOKE) are presented in sections 4 (MOKE spectroscopy), 5 (higher order MOKE effects), 6 (MOKE microscopy), 8 (high sensitivity MOKE), 9 (generalized MO ellipsometry), and 20 (Cotton–Mouton effect in two-dimensional materials). In addition, MO effects are now being investigated and utilized in spectral ranges, to which they originally seemed completely foreign, as those of synchrotron radiation x-rays (see section 14 on three-dimensional magnetic characterization and section 16 on light beams carrying orbital angular momentum) and, very recently, the terahertz (THz) regime (see section 18 on THz MOKE and section 19 on THz ellipsometry for electron paramagnetic resonance detection). Magneto-optics also demonstrates its strength in a unique way when combined with femtosecond laser pulses (see section 10 on ultrafast MOKE and section 15 on magneto-optics using x-ray free electron lasers), facilitating the very active field of time-resolved MO spectroscopy that enables investigations of phenomena like spin relaxation of non-equilibrium photoexcited carriers, transient modifications of ferromagnetic order, and photo-induced dynamic phase transitions, to name a few. Recent progress in nanoscience and nanotechnology, which is intimately linked to the achieved impressive ability to reliably fabricate materials and functional structures at the nanoscale, now enables the exploitation of strongly enhanced MO effects induced by light–matter interaction at the nanoscale (see section 12 on magnetoplasmonics and section 13 on MO metasurfaces). MO effects are also at the very heart of powerful magnetic characterization techniques like Brillouin light scattering and time-resolved pump-probe measurements for the study of spin waves (see section 7), their interactions with acoustic waves (see section 11), and ultra-sensitive magnetic field sensing applications based on nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond (see section 17). Despite our best attempt to represent the field of magneto-optics accurately and do justice to all its novel developments and its diversity, the research area is so extensive and active that there remains great latitude in deciding what to include in an article of this sort, which in turn means that some areas might not be adequately represented here. However, we feel that the 20 sections that form this 2022 magneto-optics roadmap article, each written by experts in the field and addressing a specific subject on only two pages, provide an accurate snapshot of where this research field stands today. Correspondingly, it should act as a valuable reference point and guideline for emerging research directions in modern magneto-optics, as well as illustrate the directions this research field might take in the foreseeable future.
