  • Domesticating pathogenies, evaluating change : The Eurozone crisis as a ‘hot moment’ in Greek television fiction
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - London : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 40:7, s. 957-972
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates how the Eurozone crisis is thematically negotiated in a popular Greek television comedy. Inspired by the increasing interest in the ideological role of news media during the Eurozone crisis of the late 2000s, it turns the spotlight on the sphere of entertainment in an attempt to address the importance of fictional mediations and meaning-making processes. To that end, it proposes an understanding of television fiction as an accommodator and shaper of ‘hot moments’, instigating processes of self-assessment and evaluation of change. More specifically, the study examines the ways in which the family comedy Piso sto Spiti (MEGA Channel, 2011–2013) provides culturally based understandings of the Eurozone crisis by depicting it as associated with inherent flaws of the modern Greek and by assessing the possibility of change through a juxtaposition with national ‘others’. At the same time, it identifies ways that ideology leaks from television fiction in its interaction with other media discourses simultaneously circulating within a society.

  • Archives of/as resistance : On the justice potential of eyewitness image records documenting the Syrian conflict
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • What are the new possibilities of enacting justice through the vast archives of digital eyewitness images and self-representations produced since 2011 by the grassroots Syrian opposition movement amidst both a nascent revolution and a war entailing gross human rights violations? Based on in-depth interviews with 15 anti-regime Syrian video activists, my article considers how the image makers themselves narrate the role and meaning of these archival records in efforts to reckon with Syria's tormented past and build a more just future. I thus seek to recognize the ongoing agency of the Syrian media activists who struggled, by centering them and their wishes in the current debate about the role that this new type of activist-fueled human rights records can play in helping to build roads to justice and healing in Syria.

  • Influencers as ideological intermediaries : promotional politics and authenticity labour in influencer collaborations
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 45:3, s. 528-544
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Though politics and promotion have never been completely separate, the convergence between the two spheres is increasingly prominent in today's digital culture. To broaden our understanding of such promotional politics in social media, this paper examines commercial collaborations between four Swedish influencers and two private companies that offer services enabled by specific neoliberal reforms during recent decades, and how they strive to present these services in a way that attracts an affluent but socially conscious middle-class. It argues that the political potential of influencers might not always be as spokespersons for a cause or party, but rather as ‘ideological intermediaries’ who promote a lifestyle to be inspired by, and aspire to. The analysis identifies the discourses that influencers draw on to achieve the promotional and ideological outcomes of commercial collaborations, as well as the authenticity labour that they perform in the texts. Further, the paper analyses how notions of authenticity also impact audiences' interpretation and politicization of the collaborations, in the comment sections to the sponsored blogposts

  • Studying the Nordic Resistance Movement : three urgent questions for researchers of contemporary neo-Nazis and their media practices
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 41:6, s. 878-888
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This commentary provides critical reflections on a number of challenges related to research methodology and ethics when studying organized racism in online environments. Based on ongoing fieldwork of the Nordic Resistance Movement (NMR) in Sweden, I ask three critical questions about researching the neo-Nazi organization and organized racism more generally: (1) How do we produce valid knowledge of these ‘closed’ groups in their ‘open’ online spaces? What are the limitations of our research on hidden social life when we only have access to what they want us to know? (2) Why and for whom are we producing research on these groups? Or, put another way, what ethical considerations and problems related to intent and research agendas arise in studies of neo-Nazism and other forms of organized racism? (3) What is the emotional labour involved in studying these groups for the researcher and how might it be used in a productive manner?

  • Faraway, so close! : Proximity and distance in ethnography online
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 36:6, s. 862-877
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article argues for a revised importance of distance, besides the much emphasized closeness, in the debate on and use of ethnographic methods in online environments. When returning to the founding fathers of ethnographic methods, distance is often put forward as a core aspect of ethnographic methods, something widely forgotten, or even rejected, in the current debate in the field. Space has been restructured by digital media technologies, and the spatial and temporal proximity of digital  media cultures present new challenges for research methodologies. Based on the author’s own experiences of ethnographic fieldwork in digital cultures, and with Henri Lefebvre’s theory of everyday life as a rhythm as vantage point, it is here argued that  distance, dialectically interlinked with closeness and proximity, should be given further attention in current research and debate on ethnographic methods used online.

  • Inside, outside, and beyond media logic : journalistic creativity in climate reporting
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 33:3, s. 449-465
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to accomplish more multi-dimensional analyses of media logic one needs to study how journalists grapple with news issues in their expanding development, such as the revolutionary development of the climate issue in the news. The present analysis is based on interviews with 14 Swedish environmental journalists from various news media, who have been part of editorial concentrations on climate news. The results consist of three ways of conceptualizing the climate issue among the journalists: as inside, outside, and beyond media logic. These conceptualizations give rise to three conflicting types of journalistic creativity, more precisely, the ability to effectively insert the climate issue ‘into’ media logic; the ability to go as far ‘outside’ media logic as possible while remaining credible by arraying the climate issue in ‘scientific language’; and finally, the ability to think beyond the media-logic ‘box’ and do something about it (to change journalism).

  • Audience-metric continuity? Approaching the meaning of measurement in the digital everyday
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 42:7-8, s. 1193-1209
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article argues for an expansion of existing studies on the meaning of metrics in digital environments by evaluating a methodology tested in a pilot study to analyse audience responses to metrics of social media profiles. The pilot study used the software tool Facebook Demetricator by artist Ben Grosser in combination with follow-up interviews. In line with Grosser’s intentions, the software indeed provoked reflection among the users. In this article, we reflect on three kinds of disorientations that users expressed, linked to temporality, sociality and value. Relating these to the history of audience measurement in mass media, we argue that there is merit in using this methodology for further analysis of continuities in audience responses to metrics, in order to better understand the ways in which metrics work to create the ‘audience commodity’.

  • Pathway outta pigeonhole? : De-contextualizing Majority World Countries
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Media Culture and Society. - : Sage Publications. - 0163-4437 .- 1460-3675. ; 43:1, s. 189-197
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Should regional context overshadow theoretical contributions of a doctoral dissertation or an international journal article? In this essay, we argue that expendable region-centricism diminishes the contributions of Majority World Countries to the media and communication discipline. We propose that 'de-contextualized' studies - which accentuate the theoretical, conceptual, or methodological import of research - could complement current efforts to decentre knowledge.
