  • Perichondrial Potential for Cartilagenous Regeneration
  • 1972
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Hand Surgery. - 0284-4311 .- 1651-2073. ; 6:2, s. 123-125
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This preliminary investigation was conducted in2-month-old rabbits. The perichondrium was strippedaway from the ear cartilage, and raised as a flap. A segmentof the exposed cartilage was then removed and theperichondrial flap was sutured back over the createddefect. The other ear served as a control, but there theresection of cartilage included the covering perichondrium. In the first group there was a progressive regenerationof cartilage originating from the perichondrium; in thecontrol study, no new cartilage developed. The chondrogenicactivity of the perichondrium of the aural cartilageis thus demonstrated and will be further verified insucceeding experiments.

  • Shared unmeasured characteristics among siblings confound the association of Apgar score with stress resilience in adolescence
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Acta Paediatrica. - : Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Inc.. - 0803-5253 .- 1651-2227. ; 108:11, s. 2001-2007
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: We investigated the association between low Apgar score, other perinatal characteristics and low stress resilience in adolescence. A within-siblings analysis was used to tackle unmeasured shared familial confounding.METHODS: We used a national cohort of 527,763 males born in Sweden between 1973 and 1992 who undertook military conscription assessments at mean age 18 years (17-20). Conscription examinations included a measure of stress resilience. Information on Apgar score and other perinatal characteristics was obtained through linkage with the Medical Birth Register. Analyses were conducted using ordinary least squares and fixed-effects linear regression models adjusted for potential confounding factors.RESULTS: Infants with a prolonged low Apgar score at five minutes had an increased risk of low stress resilience in adolescence compared to those with highest scores at one minute, with an adjusted coefficient and 95% confidence interval of -0.26 (-0.39, -0.13). The associations were no longer statistically significant when using within-siblings models. However, the associations with stress resilience and birthweight remained statistically significant in all analyses.CONCLUSION: The association with low Apgar score seems to be explained by confounding due to shared childhood circumstances among siblings from the same family, while low birthweight is independently associated with low stress resilience.

  • Percutaneous coronary intervention in saphenous vein grafts after coronary artery bypass grafting : a systematic review and meta-analysis
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Cardiovascular Journal. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1401-7431 .- 1651-2006. ; 55:4, s. 245-253
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To investigate the results of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in saphenous vein grafts after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Design. MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane library were searched for relevant articles published between 1 January 2000 and 29 February 2020. The PICO (population, intervention, comparison, outcome) model was applied in constructing the clinical question. Two independent researchers performed the literature search. Thirty-six articles were identified and subjected to a quality assessment. The primary outcomes of the meta-analysis were long-term in-stent restenosis and long-term major adverse cardiac events (MACE). Results. In-stent restenosis was 9.4% (95% CI: 4.2-14.7%) and MACE was 35.3% (95% CI: 27-43.7%) at mean time 2.7 ± 1.0 years. The secondary outcomes were the unsuccessful PCI rate (7.7%; 95% CI: 2.9-12.5%), 30-day MACE (4.3%; 95% CI: 2.5-6.1%), and 1-year MACE (15.5%; 95% CI: 11.7-19.3%). The use of drug-eluting stents resulted in better outcomes at least in term of in-stent restenosis, while the benefit of using embolic protection devices was questionable. Conclusions. PCI of a stenosed or occluded saphenous vein graft is a challenge for interventional cardiologists, and is still associated with relatively high rates of restenosis, MACE, and procedural failure. All efforts to enhance the results are warranted, including improved quality of the venous grafts used during CABG.

  • Juvenile school firesetting in Sweden: causes and countermeasures
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Scandinavian Studies in Criminology and Crime Prevention. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1404-3858 .- 1651-2340. ; 16:1, s. 25-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Deliberately set school fires cause significant economic, material, and social damage to society. This article aims to contribute to a sociological understanding and explanation of school fires set by juveniles and to the development of effective prevention strategies based on the results obtained. The study draws upon comprehensive empirical data from qualitative and quantitative research consisting of a questionnaire survey, substantive interviews, and document analysis. The findings show firesetting to be a complex, multifaceted phenomenon, which calls for a diversified approach to prevention relying on structural, situational, and social interventions. While juveniles setting schools on fire appear in many respects to be similar to other youths engaged in delinquent behaviours in society, the fires they set can be internally categorized according to firesetting motive, offender characteristics, and modus operandi. The implications of the resulting typology of six main types of school fires for prevention work are discussed, with practical suggestions for effective countermeasures offered.

  • Preoperative radiotherapy and extracellular matrix remodeling in rectal mucosa and tumour matrix metalloproteinases and plasminogen components.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Acta oncologica. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1651-226X .- 0284-186X. ; 48:8, s. 1144-1151
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background. Preoperative radiotherapy reduces recurrence but increases postoperative morbidity. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of radiotherapy in rectal mucosa and rectal tumour extracellular matrix (ECM) by studying enzymes and growth factors involved in ECM remodeling. Materials and methods. Twenty patients with short-term preoperative radiotherapy and 12 control patients without radiotherapy were studied. Biopsies from rectal mucosa and tumour were collected prior to radiotherapy and at surgery. Tissue MMP-1, -2, -9, TIMP-1, uPA, PAI-1, TGF-beta1 and calprotectin were determined by ELISA. Biopsies from irradiated and non-irradiated peritoneal areas were also analysed. Results. Radiotherapy increased the tissue levels of MMP-2 and PAI-1 in both the rectal mucosa and tumours while calprotectin and uPA showed an increase only in the mucosa after irradiation. The increase of calprotectin was due to an influx of inflammatory cells as revealed by immunohistochemistry. Prior to irradiation, the tumour tissues had increased levels of MMP-1, -2, -9, total TGF-beta1, uPA, PAI-1 and calprotectin compared to mucosa, while TIMP-1 and the active TGF-beta1 fraction showed no statistical difference. Conclusions. This study indicates a radiation-induced effect on selected ECM remodeling proteases. This reaction may be responsible for early and late morbidity. Interference of this response might reduce these consequences.
