  • Characteristics and performance of new firms and spinoffs in Sweden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : Oxford Univ Press. - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 22:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We analyse the rate of formation, the characteristics, and the performance of different types of new firms in Sweden over a decade. Comparisons with Denmark, Brazil, and the United States suggest that the environment for new firm formation in Sweden is not markedly different than elsewhere. In line with previous studies, spin-offs of incumbents perform better than other types of new firms, particularly if their parent firm continues to operate. A novel finding is that the larger the size of their parent, the greater is the rate of employment growth of spin-offs. This contrasts sharply with findings for firms with a single owner.

  • Measuring technological arbitrage opportunities : methodological implications for industry analysis with time series data
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : Oxford University Press. - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 26:6, s. 1021-1038
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We examined 26 industries to estimate the amount of technological arbitrage opportunity available to a typical firm. By presenting a novel way of treating time series data that combine the properties of intertemporal and sequential production frontiers, we analyze 10,650 firm-year observations for the years from 1999 to 2003. We report calculations and our empirical estimates of arbitrage opportunities for possible use by other scholars who would like to utilize arbitrage opportunities in their research and discuss implications

  • Foolishness without consequence? : From physical to virtual modeling in the history of military aircraft development at Saab
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 29:1, s. 163-181
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • From Jim March we learned that organizational intelligence demands adaptation to the needs of a distant future as well as the efficient use of resources in the present. Commitment to new ideas that deviate from norm is necessary for long-term adaptation, but comes with great uncertainty as to if when or how success will come. This article uses a historical study of military aircraft manufacturer Saab to explore the transition from experimenting with physical models and dangerous test flights in the development of rather simple aircraft systems, to the development of complex integrated aircraft systems using virtual models that can be tested in a simulated world, thereby postponing choice and the need for commitment of resources in the physical world. We show how modeling techniques and tools were developed over five generations of aircraft to help developers represent and evaluate alternative ideas, in an increasingly realistic virtual reality, thereby reducing material and fatal consequences in aircraft development. We distinguish hybrid forms of evaluation and a transition that seems to be moving in the direction of “virtual online evaluation,” where empirically informed simulation models, based on real flight data reduces the fidelity gap between reality and representation. Drawing upon a selection of Jim March’s writings, we speculate what this transition implies for learning from experience and the possibility of foolishness without consequence.

  • Is one path enough? Multiple paths and path interaction as an extension of path dependency theory
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : Oxford University Press. - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 23:5, s. 1261-1297
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To explain the development of multi-technology companies and industries where several alternative technologies co-exist and interact over long periods, this article suggests an extension of path dependency theory by providing a conceptualization of the path notion that incorporates the theoretical possibility of multiple paths and path interaction. The conceptualization is applied to a patent study of three leading companies in the lighting industry: General Electric, Osram/Siemens, and Philips. The study shows technology development patterns that are characterized by strong persistence, both within each path and across the whole technology field. These results demonstrate that multiple technological paths can co-exist in companies and industries, characterized by simultaneous long-term presence of several technologies. In such cases, path interaction takes place both between co-existing paths and when new, radically different paths are created. Although further studies are needed to identify the underlying self-reinforcing mechanisms, there is a clear indication that technological path dependency is not restricted to unitary progression patterns, as implied by previous conceptualizations.

  • Technological capabilities and late shakeouts : Industrial dynamics in the advanced gas turbine industry, 1987-2002
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 17:2, s. 335-392
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article focuses on technological discontinuities and late shakeouts in mature industries. The empirical case is combined cycle gas turbine technology in the power generation industry, where two of four main incumbents (GE, ABB, Siemens, and Westinghouse) exited the industry after several years of competition. We show that the vast differences in firm performance are strongly related to variation in technological capabilities, such as sourcing and integration of knowledge from related industries and after-launch problem solving. The findings from this case may also be of general interest for studies of dynamics in other mature, complex industries.

  • Co-development and composite clusters-the secular strength of Nordic telecommunications
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 12:1, s. 91-114
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the 1980s and 1990s Finland and Sweden were on the international frontier in telecommunications, pioneering the first-generation cellular system and leading in the development of the second generation. This strength in telecommunications has developed under various regulatory regimes in a complex industrial history, going back to the nineteenth century. To account for this Fenno-Swedish telecom trajectory, the article starts out with Porter's model of industrial competitiveness and theories of public procurement, and then focus the attention and analysis in two directions: (i) the historical role of advanced, research-intensive users and competitive public-private development pairs, and (ii) the emergence and significance of a composite binational clusters and their local agglomerations in the accelerated industry growth in the 1990s.

  • Catch-up dynamics in early industry lifecycle stages - A typology and comparative case studies in four clean-tech industries
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 29:5, s. 1257-1275
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The literature on catch-up cycles has not yet systematically conceptualized how catch-up dynamics differ between the various industries that are emerging in the green techno-economic paradigm. We address this gap by connecting catch-up cycle theory with an industry typology from global innovation systems (GISs) literature, which distinguishes four generic industry types with footloose, spatially sticky, market-, and production-anchored innovation system characteristics. Catch-up patterns in early industry lifecycle stages are expected to systematically differ between these four industry types. This assumption is explored based on a comparative case study of the solar photovoltaics, wind power, solar water heaters, and membrane bioreactors industries, each of which exemplifies one of the four generic GIS configurations. We find that the speed and disruptiveness of early leadership changes differ significantly between the four industries, and that the effectiveness of capability upgrading strategies and catching-up policies are contingent on the innovation and valuation characteristics of each industry's underlying GIS type.

  • Exploiting the control revolution by means of digitalization: Value creation, value capture, and downstream movements
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - Oxford : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1464-3650 .- 0960-6491. ; 28:3, s. 423-436
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explains why firms move downstream to profit from the value they create for customers through improved control. Under certain circumstances, product innovations and services are dynamically interdependent in the sense of improved control creating value for the customer. Since value capture is distinct from value creation, firms may need to change their means of appropriation to profit. Empirically, the article analyses how firms can renew their product offerings by incorporating control technologies into their traditional mechanical engineering products. In contrast to a strand in the recent strategy literature that argues that manufacturing firms should move downstream to deliver complementary services, this article explains these shifts as related to increased control, economies of throughput, value creation, and value capture. The article contributes to the throughput and control technology literature by showing the importance of differentiating value creation from value capture. The increased control by means of digitalization and the discrepancy between value creation and value capture explains why many manufacturing firms will become service firms.

  • Who is in and who is out? : Integration of technological knowledge in the multinational corporation
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : OXFORD UNIV PRESS. - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 28:3, s. 437-457
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article concerns the integration of technological knowledge within multinational corporations (MNCs). We empirically investigate the degree of technological knowledge integration of competence-creating subsidiaries with headquarters and sister subsidiaries and explore the effects of intersubsidiary differentiation. Data on the complete US patenting activity of 22 Swedish multinationals from 1893 to 2008 reveal significant differences in degrees of technological knowledge integration. As expected, the results show that greenfield subsidiaries are more integrated with headquarters and other greenfield subsidiaries than with acquired subsidiaries. In contrast, acquired subsidiaries do not appear to be as easily integrated into the MNC, and for this group the empirical evidence shows very little integration of technological knowledge. The findings provide extended insights into the role of competence-creating subsidiaries as providers of technological knowledge to headquarters and other MNC subsidiaries, and suggest a distinct pattern of subsidiary knowledge integration, ordered by what appears to be in-groups and out-groups, that has been overlooked in the prior MNC literature.

  • Employment protection legislation and firm growth : evidence from a natural experiment
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : Oxford University Press. - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 26:1, s. 169-185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A Swedish reform in 2001 made it possible for firms with less than 11 employees to exclude two from the last-in-first-out principle in case of layoffs. The reform increased employment growth with over 4000 additional jobs per year among firms with five to nine employees. Firms with 10 employees became 3.4 percentage points less likely to increase their workforce, indicating that the introduced threshold kept them from growing. Thus, employment protection legislation seems to act as a growth barrier for small firms.
