  • ADHD symptoms related to profiles of self-esteem in a longitudinal study of twins a person-oriented approach
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing. - : Wiley. - 1073-6077 .- 1744-6171. ; 21:4, s. 228-237
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Problem: There are conflicting research data regarding the relationship between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and low self-esteem. Methods: A person-oriented approach was used to study the relationships between ADHD symptoms and self-esteem in a longitudinal study of twins starting when they were 8 years old. A cluster analysis was performed at age 13 using five subscales from a self-esteem questionnaire. Findings: High scores of ADHD symptoms were linked to profiles characterized by lower scores in the domains "skills and talents" and "psychological well-being". Conclusion: Children with high scores of ADHD symptoms often have specific problem profiles of self-esteem.

  • Social Issues Among Children With High or Intermediate Imperforate Anus : A Proxy Perspective
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing. - Oxford : Wiley-Blackwell. - 1073-6077 .- 1744-6171. ; 22:3, s. 132-142
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PROBLEM:  Children with imperforate anus (IA) may be psychosocially affected.METHODS:  Parents of children with IA and parents in two comparison groups rated their children using a study-specific questionnaire and the Competence Scales in the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Teachers rated Academic and Adaptive Functioning Scales in the Teacher's Report Form (TRF).FINDINGS:  School items were rated favorably by the fathers of children with IA, and mothers reported less expression of their children's will. Children with IA were socially competent according to CBCL, although they received lower ratings on the TRF.CONCLUSIONS:  Psychosocial issues seem to be challenging for children with IA, and this needs attention in care management.

  • Children and parents with psychosis—Balancing between relational attunement and protection from parental illness
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing. - : Wiley. - 1073-6077 .- 1744-6171. ; 34:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Few studies have explored the experiences of young children and their parents with psychosis. The aim of the present study was to explore parent and child mental health and the parent–child relationship from the perspectives of children and their parents with psychosis. Methods The present study had a multiperspectival qualitative design. Seven children (aged 8–15 years) and their six parents with psychosis were interviewed individually. Data were analyzed according to interpretative phenomenological analysis. Results Children were found to have a limited understanding of the parent's illness. While both parents and children described the illness as part of ordinary life and focused on improvements, there was incoherence both within and between interviews. Parent–child relationships appeared to be nonhierarchical and to vary in terms of attunement and distance, which in turn seemed to be associated with the child's well‐being. Conclusion The findings contribute multiperspectival insights into lived experiences of young children and parents with psychosis. Nurses are in a key position to recognize the children's needs for continuous adult support and to promote communication about the illness.

  • A qualitative analysis of child and family complaints related to child mental health services
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1073-6077 .- 1744-6171.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Problem: Little is known about issues of patient-reported problems, in particular within psychiatric services for children with mental ill health. Child and family complaints related to child mental health services can be analyzed and discussed in light of the universal human right to health and healthcare. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze child and family complaints related to child mental health services. Methods: A retrospective, descriptive design was used. Child and family complaints were analyzed with a qualitative thematic analysis. Findings: The findings were described in three themes describing lack of access to care, inadequate communication between services and children with mental ill health and their families, and lack of clarity of who is responsible for care, leading to neglect of children's needs. These issues place a huge responsibility on parents or relatives. Conclusion: Better communication within mental health services, and better collaboration with other services such as school and social services, could limit children's suffering. Healthcare services with named professionals who specialize in child mental health and provide continuity in care, are required. General human rights principles should guide planning and care of children.

  • Implementing a salutogenic treatment model in a clinical setting of emergency child and adolescent psychiatry in Sweden
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1073-6077 .- 1744-6171. ; 31:2-3, s. 79-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PROBLEM: Emergency care in child and adolescent psychiatry often lacks a coherent treatment model. This study reports on the development and implementation of a salutogenic treatment model at the Child & Adolescent Psychiatric Emergency Unit in Malmo, Sweden. METHODS: The development and implementation involved all staff categories and was guided by a recognized authority on salutogenesis. Generalized resistance resources (GRR) were identified that could be implemented at the unit to improve patients' sense of coherence. FINDINGS: Eight GRR were developed and implemented at the unit. During the 6-month period following the implementation, patients (n = 41) and parents reported satisfaction with the treatment, while mental health improved between admission and discharge, and both treatment length and readmission rates were reduced. CONCLUSION: A salutogenic treatment model involving GRR seems to be a promising approach in child and adolescent psychiatric emergency treatment.

  • Indonesian COVID-19 lesson : A mixed-methods study on adolescent health status and health services during pandemic
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing. - : Wiley. - 1073-6077 .- 1744-6171. ; 37:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Topic: The COVID-19 pandemic affected adolescents' physical and psychological health. There must be specific services to cater to the needs of adolescents during COVID-19 in Indonesia. Lessons learned from previous pandemics will be beneficial for nurses and other health professionals to prepare services for future pandemics. Purpose: This mixed-method study aimed to examine 459 Indonesian adolescents' health, literacy, preventive measures, and preferred health services during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study also examines sociodemographics, respondent characteristics, health information sources, and media choices. Results: A total of 47.5% of adolescents knew about COVID-19, 26.8% experienced physical health changes, and 61.7% considered wearing masks. Adolescent health information came from teachers (26.6%) and the Internet (32.9%). Psychological changes showed 67.8% irritation. Indonesians preferred online counseling (53.8%) and WhatsApp (45.8%) for pandemic health services. COVID-19 literacy did not affect physical or mental health (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Most adolescents reported mental and physical health changes during COVID-19. Our data suggest that adolescents' strong COVID−19 knowledge did not prevent anxiety and other psychological difficulties. The longitudinal studies could be utilized if pandemic demands social and physical distance. The government, as well as nurses, might utilize WhatsApp-based remote online treatment for health services.

  • The gap in transition between child and adolescent psychiatry and general adult psychiatry
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing. - : Wiley. - 1073-6077 .- 1744-6171. ; 26:2, s. 103-109
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: During transition from child and adolescent psychiatry (CAP) to general adult psychiatry (GenP) young adults with mental illness face multilevel transitions along with a risk for disruption in continuity of care. The aim of this study was to describe professionals' experiences and views of the transition process from CAP to GenP. Method: Data were collected through six focus group discussions with professionals from both CAP and GenP and analyzed by content analysis. Results: The results showed a gap in transition between CAP and GenP when different perspectives and care cultures meet in a complex process. Conclusions: Cooperation, transition planning, and a mutual understanding of care can support young adults in transition from CAP to GenP. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
