  • Learning Physiotherapy : Physiotherapy students' ways of experiencing the patient encounter
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Physiotherapy Research International. - : Wiley. - 1358-2267 .- 1471-2865. ; 36:4, s. 257-273
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and PurposeThe aim of this paper was to describe and analyse the impact of formal education and professional experience on physiotherapy students' ways of experiencing interaction within a patient encounter.MethodTwo groups of physiotherapy students were interviewed on two occasions; during the second and last term of their formal education programme, and during the last term and after 18 months' professional experience. Data were subjected to a qualitative analysis. Changes in conceptions between the two interview occasions were described quantitatively.ResultsSubjects' ways of experiencing interaction within a patient encounter could be described in four main categories: Mutuality; Technicalism; Authority and Juxtaposition. Mutuality and Technicalism denoted an integration of the communicative and problem-solving processes involved in the encounter, the former category from a patient-centred and the latter from a physiotherapist-centred perspective. Authority and Juxtaposition denoted a separation of the processes, the former from a physiotherapist-centred perspective and the latter from a patient-centred one.ConclusionsThe results show a trend as regards direction of change in conceptions from separated to integrated perspectives on the communicative and problem-solving processes after the formal education programme. After 18 months' professional practice the Mutuality category dominated.

  • Physiotherapists in Balint Group Training.
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Physiotherapy Research International. - : Wiley. - 1358-2267 .- 1471-2865. ; 5:2, s. 85-96

    • Background and PurposeBalint group training (BGT) is a method widely used for enhancing understanding of the relationship and communication between health professionals and their patients. Participants meet in small groups, on a regular basis, with a tutor to discuss their experiences of problem cases. The method was originally developed in the 1950s for enhancing understanding of the doctor-patient relationship. Few studies have focused on BGT and physiotherapists. The aim of the present study was to describe and analyse physiotherapists' experiences of participation in BGT as a means of learning and understanding the physiotherapist-patient relationship.MethodSemi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with three physiotherapists working in private practice, all participating in BGT. The intervews were transcribed and subjected to a qualitative analysis.ResultsThe results are presented in a sequential model, featuring eight themes in which the physiotherapists' experiences of the training process are portrayed.ConclusionsThe results suggest that BGT and sharing the experiences of others may be considered a way of enhancing understanding of the patient encounter in clinical practice, possibly to the benefit of physiotherapists and their patients

  • Variations in how physiotherapists understand their work on organizational and societal levels
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physiotherapy Research International. - : Wiley. - 1358-2267 .- 1471-2865. ; 16:2, s. 101-108
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and Purpose. Many physiotherapists have moved from treating persons on individual and group levels to working in different service positions on organizational and societal levels within healthcare organizations. The present study has investigated how physiotherapists working on those levels understand their job. The aim of the study was to describe variations in physiotherapists' understanding of their work on organizational and societal levels within healthcare organizations. The research question was: how do physiotherapists understand their work on organizational and societal levels? Method. A phenomenographic approach was chosen. Physiotherapists working in different positions on organizational and societal levels were interviewed. Results. Among our 21 informants we found three logically interrelated categories: 'exploring and performing an assignment', 'interactive learning and balancing support' and 'moving within a continually changing structure'. These three categories of descriptions formed an outcome space of ways of understanding work on organizational and societal levels within healthcare organizations. Conclusions. The findings in this study can be used as tools in professional discussions on how ways of understanding work have an impact on how work is performed and how change is achieved.

  • Balance exercise facilitates everyday life for people with multiple sclerosis : A qualitative study
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physiotherapy Research International. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1358-2267 .- 1471-2865. ; 23:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: The aim of this qualitative study was to describe the experience and perceived effects on everyday life for people with multiple sclerosis after participating in a balance exercise programme focusing on core stability, dual tasking, and sensory strategies (the CoDuSe programme).METHODS: A qualitative approach was chosen, using face-to-face interviews analysed with content analysis. Twenty-seven people with multiple sclerosis (20 women, 7 men) who had participated in the CoDuSe programme were included. All could walk 20 m with or without walking aids but could not walk further than 200 m. The CoDuSe programme was given twice weekly during a 7-week period.RESULTS: The analysis revealed five categories. Learning to activate the core muscles described how the participants gained knowledge of using their core muscles and transferred this core muscle activation into everyday life activities. Improved bodily confidence covered narratives of being more certain of the ability to control their bodies. Easier and safer activities showed how they could now perform activities in everyday life more safely and easily. Increased independence and participation involved the participants' improved ability and self-confidence to execute activities by themselves, as well as their increased participation in activities in daily living. Experiences of the balance exercise programme revealed that they found the programme novel and challenging. The overall theme was balance exercise facilitates everyday life.CONCLUSION: Participating in the CoDuSe programme was perceived to facilitate everyday life for people with multiple sclerosis. Taking part in the balance exercise programme taught the participants how to activate and use the core muscles, which increased their bodily confidence. Having increased bodily confidence helped them to perform everyday life activities with more ease and safety, which increased their independence and participation. The participants described the CoDuSe programme as novel and challenging, yet feasible.
